newcruiser30 Posted March 10, 2009 #1 Share Posted March 10, 2009 If we purchased traveler checks will RCI cash them on board the ship during our cruise? Would RCI charge a fee to cash them? We contacted RCI and the guy I spoke to had no idea. Thanks!!!
cb at sea Posted March 10, 2009 #2 Share Posted March 10, 2009 There's no fee to cash them, but cash is easier. Bring larger bill (less bulky) stick them in your room safe, and break them down as needed.
mbh02 Posted March 10, 2009 #3 Share Posted March 10, 2009 I have cashed travelers checks in the amount of fifty dollars at the pursers desk in the past with no problems. No fee was charged. I don't know if they have a limit on how much you can cash in one day. I have also cashed travelers check in the casino. I think it would be wise to bring both cash and travelers checks. If nothing else you will be able to use the travelers checks in almost any port while shopping.
Tigers2 Posted March 10, 2009 #4 Share Posted March 10, 2009 I always take travelers checks on our cruises. I feel secure with travelers checks in my vacation fund. I also take a percent of cash. I never had any concerns cashiing the travelers checks! I use to take $1,000 in travelers checks but now I adjusted the amount down to 5 $100's. megr1125 Posted March 10, 2009 #5 Share Posted March 10, 2009 we take them all the time....no problem cashing... HOWEVER...in their docs, RC now states, in red letters..that you can't used travelers cheque cards....(nor can you use those prepaid debit/gift cards like Amex...they say onthem that they can't be used on ships..., but i think you can use them to pay for the cruise-as payment to your TA or the cruise line.....) Alexis Posted March 10, 2009 #6 Share Posted March 10, 2009 If there is a long line at the pursers desk, the casino will cash quite a few for you. I have done as many as $700 at once. ;) There is no fee for that. EDIT: I usually cash them the night before a port in the casino. The pursers is always crowded in the morning on a port day. ;)
Merion_Mom Posted March 10, 2009 #7 Share Posted March 10, 2009 You will be able to cash a traveler's cheque at either the purser's desk (guest relations desk) or at the cashier's window in the casino. No fee, no muss, no fuss. (please remember that the casino is not open when the ship is in port)

No fee, no muss, no fuss. (please remember that the casino is not open when the ship is in port) I heard a rumor that the casino was going to either charge a fee or eliminate the ability to get cash against your seapass account. Does anyone know if that is true? We are leaving on Explorer this Sunday and would like to get the points on our credit card rather than take lots of cash or use an ATM. An alternative to get cash might be cashing checks but I think there is a limit to the amount of personal checks they will cash. Looking for best options to get cash without paying fees. The casino now charges a 3% fee for you to get cash on your on board account so if you give $100 your Sewapass account will be billed $103. I believe I read that a passenger can only cash 1 personal check on board at the Pursers Desk. That amount can be no more than $200.00. If I am wrong, I know someone will come on and correct me. ;) =julesbeara;18527320]We seem to spend less money when we bring travelers checks??? Cash just seems to go faster...... I agree with that. My husband and I also feel like you do and bring Travelers Checks for that reason.

Yes, that is true, and that is why I now take traveler's cheques. It started last year, so it is no longer new. If you want cash on your SeaPass, you can have it, but there will be a 3% fee added. The ATM charges a flat $6, so if you want more than $200, the ATM is a better financial choice.
kimba1 Posted March 10, 2009 #13 Share Posted March 10, 2009 Thanks for the insights.....it used to be easier when you could just get "fee free" cash at the casino. Does this also mean if you use your seapass to gamble at a table in the casino they will charge the 3% fee?
jeannejj Posted March 10, 2009 #14 Share Posted March 10, 2009 Yes, even at the tables, you will be charged 3%

I bring travelers checks every cruise and they've always worked well for me. I usually cash them at the pursers desk when I need cash on port days. On the last day I use any leftover ones to pay down my sea pass account.
