peaches80 Posted March 18, 2009 #1 Share Posted March 18, 2009 I know in Mexico you need to be careful about what water you drink and food you eat. Is this the same situation in Europe? Is it safe to drink the water or should we stick to bottled water? What about the ice? And food - any worries there? Thanks for your help.
ab0si Posted March 18, 2009 #2 Share Posted March 18, 2009 I can not speak for Moldavia or certain areas of the Transcaucasian republics, but for any place you are likely to visit via cruise ship, the tap water is fine.

There is not much ice, and I had never had any problems with the food. Some countries are cleaner then USA. Some tap water has many minerals and that may be the reason why you should drink bottle water. But Europe is not Mexico.
CathyCruises Posted March 18, 2009 #4 Share Posted March 18, 2009 The best water is what comes out of the beautiful old fountains in Rome. Really!

Venice, Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Naples, Athens, Marsailles we drank non-bottled water, nobody got sick. In Kusadasi and Istanbul we did only bottled. If you feel uncomfortable bring a liter bottle and fill up on the ship daily. We did that too, but in resturaunts we usually just took tap water, except as noted. cberge Posted March 18, 2009 #9 Share Posted March 18, 2009 The water is fine to drink in Europe...this has been brought up a lot.Not any where close to the water in Mexico. If you have any qualms at all in any one place just pick up some bottled water. If ordering in a resto they will charge quite a bit and will ask if gas or no..sparkling or not.Tap is usually just fine if you want water. It's free:)
peaches80 Posted March 19, 2009 Author #10 Share Posted March 19, 2009 Thanks all! We are going to be in Barcelona, Rome, Malta, Cannes and Naples. Sounds like there are no worries about the water :)
legaleaglegreen Posted March 19, 2009 #11 Share Posted March 19, 2009 Tap water in Istanbul is generally safe but very heavily chlorinated and doesn't taste very good. Tap water elsewhere is fine and in many countries tastes better than most U.S. tap water (NYC excepted, of course).
Hambagahle Posted March 20, 2009 #12 Share Posted March 20, 2009 I live in Switzerland and certainly drink tap water here, and all over Western Europe. I would be careful about drinking the water in ex-Yugoslavia and Turkey though. However I wouldn't go so far as to brush my teeth in bottled water in those countries!! Generally in Western Europe IF water is not considered drinkable there is a sign on the tap - in France and here it says "Eau non potable". In Italy "Acqua non potabile" in Germany "kein drinkwasser" and so on...otherwise assume the water is absolutely fine!
