Royal Caribbean Curfew for teens

A year before last, on the Explorer Of The Seas, I believe in March - at 3:00am in the morning, several teens started a fire on the sports deck at the basketball court and miniature golf, and skating rink area and did considerable damage. (I can't imagine what could have happened if they started a fire somewhere inside!). At the next port, they and their familes were seen being escorted off the ship!
I have a hunch this is what started this whole thing!

Those teens had a severe case of dementia.(regardless of how much they drank) *sheesh*

to everyone who said they give their kids a curfew when the activities close...why? most of the time they dont even go to the activities. most of their time is spent sitting around socializing. so why not let them sit around and socialize after the activities stop?

Because we just like to be mean! Control freaks...that's what we are. Really, if my kids are behaving and are sitting quietly, socializing, I may let them stay out. If they are loud or disturbing.. in they go. Most parents know if their kids are the rowdy type or the quiet kind. They then make the rules according to what they think is best for their kids. I'm not sure that there needs to be a curfew. I just think that parents need to be parents and that includes vacation time also.

Parents should be held responsible for their kids actions while on the ship. It seems that most parents today think that since they are on vacation, it means being on vacation from doing their job as a parent. I read last month from someone that was on the Mariner. He stated that during the cruise the captain placed about three or four familes off of the ship at various ports. I give him a high five for that. Maybe if this were to happen more often, some parents would take notice. I'm not saying all kids are bad but they sure stand out from the others.

Think of a cruise ship as a small town, I mean you have 5000 people (Pass and crew) on there.

Would you let your kid walk around town all night, prob not.

I think that the cerfiew is designed to protect kids, and as someone who has extensivly studied statistics SOME juviniles are prone to act more delinquant at night when there are no parents present and the late night hours give them freedom that they dont get at home.

THis cerfiew i think is caused by some adults misbehaving and juviniles misbehaving and will effect all. I think it is nescessary but is it fair to punish a 17 year old who has never done anything wrong, no, but is there any other way to fairly do it, no.

Sorry Hoopster, I don't think there's a single relationship between a small town and a cruise ship. Now if the the small town was cut off from the rest of the world (no guns, no gangs (from the town next door), maybe you'd be getting closer.

Also, I don't punish my kids if another kid (even my own other kid) has done wrong. My son(s) have to continue to earn their trust. I take FULL responsibility as a parent whilst they are children.

I think there are few parents here who wouldn't cringe if their own kids got upto probably even half of what they got upto at thier age. Scary....

I don't see a curfew as punishment, I see it as common sense. Regardless of how "mature" a teen is, they are still a child. Curfews help protect CHILDREN from adults who aren't mature enough to hendle themselves, as well as protecting children from other children and themselves.

Bottom line, children are children, and if the line wants to impose a curfew on children, it's their option. If the children and their families don't like it, they can vacation elsewhere. Personally I think most parents who don't like the idea of a curfew would prefer to not parent, and would rather let the cruise line parent their children while they are on vacation. That's simply a very sad fact of life.

Let me tell you a scary story - we were on the Majesty in 1997. At 1 AM my niece (at the time she was 15) was no where to be found. My daughter (at the time 14) left her on deck with some new found "friends" at 12:00 and came back to our cabin to meet her curfew. My sister did not give my niece a curfew - mistake. It took us 2 hrs to find her - we had the ship "security" out looking, the crew, everyone we could find except the captain who i'm sure would have joined us if necessary out of concern. Long story short - we found her in the cabin of a "friend". Yes, this was her parents' fault and trust me they learned a valuable lesson - from then on she was stuck to their side on every cruise from then on unless it was a "structured" teen activity. I can't begin to tell you what was going through our minds at that time of the morning - rape, thrown or fell overboard (that does happen), or at the worst murdered!!! Sooooo - these parents that don't keep up with their children should realize that a ship, in the middle of nowhere, at night, with lots of "strangers" is NOT the best place for a teen to be alone!!!! Like it or lump it you parents are responsible for your kids - God gave them to YOU not a cruise line!!!

Sadly 7nucruzers your right. However, for every one sad "ship" story like this, there are probably 10,000 "non ship" stories. You see, this is real life. Perhaps this "incident" has taught everyone a lesson that saves a life in the future ("the butterfly effect"). Of course, we shall never know but us us pray this is so.

Also, at some age, parents have to let go. (Mine did at about 14 ). Each parent has to make this heart breaking (not for my parents) decision alone. There never seems to be a right time, especially if something goes wrong. I dread the day, when I have to let my son drive on his own here in Atlanta...

God Bless all, whatever decisions you make.

Seeing how I am on the extended plan here at college I can offer some insight into this whole curfew thing.

1. Set a reasonable curfew early and then back off it when they get older. The first month of college I can tell who was on a tight leash as they go freakin nuts. Those are the kids that are hooking up with 3-4 guys a night and passing out drunk.

2. The kid that was allowed a little freedom and could have a drink here and there are typically the ones that last longer, bc its no longer a big deal.

3. Teens do what they see. So if the see mommy and daddy all trashed on the ship, chances are they will try it too. Dont tell your teens not to drink if you are to sloppy to stand upright.

4. Layoff them. Let them do their thing. Cruises are the perfect way to meet people. Dont you remember when you were young?

Hi,

Would you take your 13-16 yr. old to the Mall of America and let them go off on their own? Cruise ships can have 2,000 to 4,000 passengers and crew memebers. Face it there is crime on cruise ships. Do a search on cruise ship sex crimes, and cruise ship crimes and you will get a listing of many rapes, etc. Those parents that don't give their children curfews do you actually go to sleep knowing they are still out roaming the ship? Do you do that at home? I think too many parents have a false sense of security on a cruise ship.

Susan2u:

I totally agree - I have two teenage daughters - one in college. Even though I've had to "let go" of one I pretty much keep up on what she's up to (you know "eyes in the back of my head"). Some of these "you have to let them grow up sometime" people will regret that one day. You do have to let go, however on a cruise ship is not the time. Crime does happen on cruise ships - they tend to keep in very quiet. wonder why?????
