Avoid B-508.

Probably most cruisers on this site prefer balconies, but we prefer inside cabins because of wife's proneness to nausea. We asked for an inside cabin (Ruby 3-21 through 3-28) that would be as close to the center of the ship to have the least pitching and rolling.

Too late we found that B-508 was next to a pantry and under a stairway, so we had a steady diet of crashing sounds and footsteps that were loud enough to wake us up on a couple of occasions.

We had left it up to the TA to pick a good cabin for us. Next time I will become better informed about the layout of our ship and make my own selection.

I would expect most would have more nausea in an inside cabin where fresh air isn't available ... but thanks for posting the problem with the cabin.
I agree; if I were prone to motion sickness, I'd be better off with fresh air but if that's not an option, having a window would be better than an inside. I don't get seasick but having lived for decades in New England sailing towns, I know that the worst thing you can do if you are feeling nauseous on a sailboat is to go into a cabin; staying on deck and being in fresh air is better.

Sorry you had a bad experience with this cabin. Just because one is mid-ship doesn't mean it's a great cabin. There are others near the service elevators and/or crew areas I'd avoid as well.

Thanks for the warning, and I have to agree with SN, being inclosed without fresh air is probably the worst thing you can to do avoid nausea for most people. But this is of coarse your choice.

One thing to always remember to pack, 'ear plugs'. You just never know when they might be needed. They take up very little room, but can save your cruise sleep if you happen to have a noisey location, loud neighbors or be close to things like the stewards service area. ;)

We are scheduled to be in B511 on the Ruby this summer which is on the other side of the ship one cabin in from B508. It looked like a great inside mid ship cabin when we booked it. There is one cabin B507 between us and what looks like open space (may be the pantry you mentioned). I am confused as to how there could be steps above the cabin since there is another cabin directly above it. Do you think that we will have a problem with the cabin that we have selected?

I was in cabin B507 on the Grand Princess that just ended on March 27/09. I think I was right next to a pantry. What a memory I have:rolleyes:. It was probably the most quiet cabin I have had on any ship. I'm not sure if it would be the same layout as the Ruby. The only time I heard anything was the night before disembarkation. Sounded like they were banging suitcases on the floor above me. There was a lot more noise coming from the hallways on the cruise where parents let their "little darlings" run up and down the hallways like holligans.

As you can tell by your own experience, it's always wise to check out deck plans before booking a cruise.

We always have an outside (mini or suite) and our kids have an inside across from us and I can tell you that my experience is that I feel the movement a lot more in the inside. As a matter of fact, I can't spend all that much time in the kids cabin if the seas are choppy at all.

Since you relied on your TA to select the cabin for you and your wife, and she picked one with obvious drawbacks to anyone looking at deck plans, I think you should consider getting a more knowledgable TA or making your own selection - as you say you propose doing in the future:)

Never let a TA pick your cabin. Study the deck plans and make sure you are sandwiched with cabins around you, above you and below you. You never know what type of noise you will hear from those white spaces you see on the deck plans. TA's just pick as most don't know what they are picking from our experience.

We have been told both fresh air and - the ability to focus on the horizon or distant point helps miniimize motion sickness. A balcony midships cabin does help - but a Reliefband Wrist Watch does the best job. SeaFish

I have found that a balcony midships is a great place to sit when the ship is rocking. For some reason, the ships movement is greatly diminished outside on the balcony.

I disagree with this!!! I for one know what cabins are good and bad on ships. I study the layouts and never pick cabins with places like casinos, restaurants, lounges above or below. Saying never let a TA pick your cabin is just wrong. You could have a cabin with cabins above and below you, but this does not guarantee quiet...you could have a noisy neighbour who likes to blare their TV all day and night. Or as our friends had on a recent cruise.....kids who liked to yell and bang around their cabin, going in and out of the cabin at all hours and the door always banging shut.
