Norwegian Epic's Hull Artwork Revealed

Norwegian Cruise Line today unveiled the contemporary hull design which will adorn Norwegian Epic, the company’s largest and most innovative Freestyle Cruising ship to date, scheduled for delivery in May 2010. In addition, the company will begin taking reservations for Norwegian Epic’s 2010/2011 inaugural season on Thursday, May 21, 2009, with a special preview day for Norwegian’s past guests (Latitudes members) on Wednesday, May 20, 2009.

 

Norwegian Epic’s hull artwork, designed by the company’s internal marketing team,

 

is painted on both sides with free form rolling waves of varying sizes that run through a modern color spectrum of lime, aqua, red, and purple and are dotted by silver circles.

 

Norwegian Epic’s hull design is a departure from the rest of the line’s signature hull artwork which typically is inspired by the ship’s name or the destination the ship sails from. Instead, the hull artwork on Norwegian Epic takes on the characteristics of the ship’s interior features – a sophisticated, modern and sleek design and color palette that is seen in everything from the innovative curved design of the New Wave staterooms to the more contemporary design of the ship’s public areas.

 

“A Norwegian Cruise Line ship is instantly recognizable with its distinctive hull art that conveys each ship’s personality and the freedom and flexibility that is found on board,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer. “With Norwegian Epic, we are taking Freestyle Cruising to the next level, so it is fitting that her hull artwork conveys more of the modern, sleek design guests will find once they are on board the ship.”

 

The 4,200-passenger Norwegian Epic incorporates many innovations including several new types of staterooms – the curved New Wave staterooms; the biggest ship-within-a-ship suite complex at sea, comprising 60 suites and villas on two private decks at the top of the ship; a new category of inside staterooms for the budget-conscious traveler – The Studios; and spa and family-friendly accommodations. The ship also boasts unique nightlife options with the first Ice Bar at sea; an expansive Aqua Park with the only tube slide and largest bowl slide at sea -- The Epic Plunge; seven decks of Freestyle Family Fun with highlights including a 33-foot high, 64-foot wide extreme rock climbing wall and the first ever rappelling wall at sea; the most bowling lanes at sea with six in two venues; a mixed-use sports deck with the ability for guests to engage in eight different athletic activities; as well as three separate kids’ and teen activity areas and the first squash court at sea. In addition, Norwegian Epic will offer the next generation of Freestyle Dining with 14 restaurant choices – the most at sea – and 18 bars and lounges.

 

Norwegian Epic is scheduled to sail year-round to the Eastern and Western Caribbean from Miami, beginning in summer 2010. The ship’s Western Caribbean itinerary includes calls in Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatán, Bay Islands, Honduras; and Cozumel, Mexico. Norwegian Epic’s Eastern Caribbean itinerary includes calls in Philipsburg, St. Maarten; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and Nassau, Bahamas. These cruises go on sale to the public on May 21, 2009.

I like the ship, but the hull art makes it look like a birthday party (streamers).....I also find the name looks ridiculously tiny for such a large ship.

 

Can't wait to sail the TA, but the art is not nearly as fun as the other ships.

Really? The name looks small or are you kidding? I thought it was pretty big, but I don't know what to compare it to.

 

I think she looks nice - fun!! When I read "rolling waves," I was picturing something more gawdy, but this is light and modern.

Its okay for the Epic. NCL didn't need another flower. I like it better than Sky's hull art currently. The Sky would be better with orange blossoms instead of Hawaiian flowers at the moment. Picture of Epic's hull art is now at the Epic website page:

Since she will be NCL's Miami flagship, they should have named her Norway....

A new Epic reveal is always exciting! :D

 

I must say the hull art is a bit reserved for this ship though. I thought they would have gone more all out with a bigger design of some sort. :cool: Doesn't mean I'm not going to sail on her!!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!! :D

 

Too bad they didn't have a competition or something for the hull art! It would have been great (even if NCL fixed it and put in submissions done by real graphic artists). This design is too simplistic for a ship of Epic proportions but hey.. I'm not staring at the outside when I'm onboard... I'm INSIDE! :D

I like it. Since the ship will be so big ... I think the hull artwork will stand out just fine.

I'm with you, Big Steve. I think it's really underwhelming! I still think it looks like something my grandson built with his lego set. :rolleyes: I'm sure many will like her and sail her, but she's definitely not for me. :p

As another poster said, for an "Epic" ship, the hull art got me thinking "Happy Birthday". Kind of cheezy, hopefully it'll grow on me, but as of this point, the whole ships just looks like, for lack of a better way to say it "a very dainty dump truck".

It appear similar to the Jewel class to me, except they moved the courtyard villas complex forward above the bridge and away from the smokestack. The penthouse passengers have no reason to leave the complex area for much at all.... Except to visit the casino and spa, do shore excursions, and see shows.....

What is it about her size, as opposed to the size of Freedom and Voyager Class ships which both have visited and sailed from Boston and NY, that would make it impossible for her to sail from NY? In comparison to many of the other over the top design features of the Epic, I actually think her hull art is quite subdued especially when viewed beside the hull art on other NCL ships.:) To me, that is a good thing, but obviously there are many who would prefer something more spectacular.

They did move the villas up front. To me its fine where-ever they put them because I'll never get to experience them. Plus they needed the room around the smoke stacks for the water slides and getting to them. If they didn't move the villas forward then regular guests would have had to been given access to the exclusive courtyard area to get on the slides. This wouldn't have worked out very well. I can understand the logic behind their design. As for the Penthouse passengers leaving the villa area, well they may never the whole cruise so that's more space we regular folk have to enjoy the ship! :D
