Pacific Princess fell short of Princess standards

My husband and I recently returned from a 14 day cruise to Alaska on the Pacific Princess. We celebrated our 35th anniversary while on board. 2 days prior to boarding, we received a wonderful upgrade from an OV cabin to an aft balcony, category BA. We were on the very back of the ship (7116)…what a treat! (Thank you Princess)

This was our 15th Princess cruise, our 22nd overall, and our 8th Alaska cruise. We are loyal Princess fans.

I am posting because there were some things that did not seem up to Princess standards on this ship. Our last Princess cruise was 15 months ago, so don’t know that this is a recent Princess issue or one related to the ship which is the reason that I am posting. I do not want this to be seen as bashing Princess. It is without a doubt, our favorite cruise line.

They are small things, but seemed to add up:

1. Once our cabin was changed, our mail never fully caught up to us in spite of numerous visits to the Purser’s desk.

2. We like to have wine in our room. Every time we called room service for clean wine glasses, we were told “we’ll see what we can do, but we are running short” Sometimes we got glasses, sometimes we didn’t.

3. We were told by the MD that because we were Elite, we would receive an invitation to the wine tasting so did not need to sign up. We never got an invitation (see #1) nor were we ever on the list to receive one.

3. There seemed to always be an elevator that was out of service. Keep in mind that you have very few elevators on the smaller ships.

4. There were no washcloths in the public restrooms just paper towels.

5. Our anniversary cake did not arrive at our dining table until 3 days after our anniversary date.

Like I say, they are small things, but we have never encountered this on a previous Princess cruise. We did have a wonderful cruise due in large part to the great itinerary and ideal weather.

We are cruising again with Princess (CB) in Oct.

Just thought I would share….

You ask your room steward or you can get wine glasses from any bar. That's what we do.

3. We were told by the MD that because we were Elite, we would receive an invitation to the wine tasting so did not need to sign up. We never got an invitation (see #1) nor were we ever on the list to receive one.

You don't need an invitation. They have an Elite list and all you do is show your card.

3. There seemed to always be an elevator that was out of service. Keep in mind that you have very few elevators on the smaller ships.

No elevators out of service when we were on for 28 days in March/April. I can't believe that all of them kept breaking down. Sometimes they just shut one down periodically for maintenance.

4. There were no washcloths in the public restrooms just paper towels.

Princess hasn't had washcloths in public restrooms for several years.

5. Our anniversary cake did not arrive at our dining table until 3 days after our anniversary date.

You should have reminded your waiter of your anniversary date.

Judith thanks for sharing.

Couple of items: Do you have 150+ cruise days?

I don't ever remember wash cloths in public restrooms and I started with them on the old Crown in 1991. Don't think we have ever had an upgrade either.

I sorta agree with Pia1913. Nitpicking a little, maybe?

You should of just went and showed your Black Card they would have seated you I'am sure

I use the stairs.

4. There were no washcloths in the public restrooms just paper towels.

Write a letter to Princess demanding a free cruise.

I think HAL provides wash cloths in public rest rooms, but I don't ever remember seeing them on Princess. Paper towels spread less germs and will not be grabbed and possibly reused.

I have to agree with 'most' of Pia's answers here. These things are so small, I wouldn't have given them a second thought, but that is just me I guess.

As for the anniversary cake, we have usually needed to remind the waiter, and it appears with no problems.

And I also agree, these problems were so minor, I also look at them as nitpicking. IMHO!

Hi Jack,

Thanks for your posting and thanks for replying to me without hostility. Seems to me like I have seen a lot of that lately on CC.

Yes, I could be nitpicking a little, I get that way when things add up. None of this ruined the cruise for me and we would cruise this ship again if the itinerary was appealing. Overall it was a great cruise. We saw previously unseen ports and the wildlife was abundant! However, we would not go on this ship again just to experience the ship, not so much because of the shortcomings I posted, but because of the ship in general. We felt that it was different from our other Princess cruises. We were not alone in that opinion and it could have been just that particular cruise.

Again, we are die hard Princess loyalists. I just don’t think that this ship was for us.

We do not have 150 days of cruising. If you are wondering about our Elite status, we took advantage of an incentive that was offered to selected Captain Circle members this year where if you booked an Alaska (or Europe) summer cruise, you would be upgraded to the next level of Captain’s Circle for that cruise only. Fortunately for us it would have been our last Platnium cruise, so we were Elite on that cruise and from here on out. (Loved the free laundry.)

Hi All,

OP says they are all little things, but are these because of cut backs,

are staff more over worked than normal, are stocks a little bit lower,

is maintenance a little bit less than before. Is Princess putting profit

before service.

We all know business is tough out there just now and Princess must make

profit.

We cruise next week so will find out if service is normal or slipping.

Judith-You are not the first that hasn't been overly impressed with the smaller ships in the fleet, maybe I am reading between the lines, but that is how I understand your statement.

We sailed around Tahiti on the TP and had some first time Princess cruisers we met onboard. They were so underwhelmed with the small ship that they swore to 'never' sail Princess again. So, it isn't only you that feels this way, if I am reading your correctly.

"However, we would not go on this ship again just to experience the ship, not so much because of the shortcomings I posted, but because of the ship in general. We felt that it was different from our other Princess cruises. We were not alone in that opinion and it could have been just that particular cruise."

Although we do sail on the smaller ships, mainly because of the itineary, they are not our favorites either. But when the itineary is 'the best', not much of a choice I guess.

Hope your next cruise is better than your last. But, don't be surprised if a lot of the small things you found not to your liking, are also that way on the larger ships. The economy has cut many of the 'little things'.

Most ships we sail on, with every line including Princess, have an elevator out of commission for part of the cruise.

You will not find wash cloths in the public restrooms, only paper towels, even on the larger ships.

If you are celebrating a special occasion, a word to the waiter will have a cake there within minutes.

As others suggested, if room service is running low on glasses, just ask your room steward, or go to any bar, and they will give you what you need.

And now you know, you just go to the wine tasting (since you are Elite) and your card will get you in. ;)

Hi Judith

First of all Congratulations on your anniversary!

I must admit, even if my trip wasn't a special occasion, or even if I wasn't elite (loyalty?!) I would expect basics such as wine glasses (when requested) or my cake (don't we fill in the birthday/anniversary form online in?)

What's the point in a nice gesture (ie cake) if it's late?

I know peope may be aggressive or rude to me for saying this but I just wanted to say, I read your comments,Judith, and empithise with your feelings!

Judith, I try very had never to be rude to anyone and I certainly would not start with you.

As Toto inferred you have a problem with the ship. And I also have the same problem with the smaller ships, and I also have a problem with the extra deck monsters like you are going on in Oct in fact I like them less than the small ones. I have posted my opinions on them many times. But would I go on one again if I liked the itinerary? You bet your bippy. It is still Princess and that's better than whats in 2nd place.

Hi Judith,

Just thought I would "pop" in since we were on the same cruise.

1. Not sure what mail wasn't catching up with you. Was it things like your Captain Circle Party Invitation, shore excursion tickets, disembarkation packet. Those are the only things that we got that needed to be delivered to a specific cabin.

2. We always had clean wine glasses. We asked our room steward the first day and then we always had clean glasses for the next day.

3. The mixup on the Wine tasting may have been the fact that you received the special promotion for a "jump" early to Elite status. I am sure there were alot of passengers who took advantage of that promotion. Sorry you missed out on that.

4. We also noticed a couple times that a single elevator was out of service, but it was usually no more than about 30 minutes. One time......may I delicately say.......someone had a bit of a rough time with the seas after leaving Kodiak and the elevator was taken out of service for a bit longer time due to the need to clean and sanitize it. Also......just teasing but I thought maybe they were reminding us that we needed the exercise and we should use the stairs. :-)

5. We have been cruising with Princess since 1998 and there have never been "wash clothes" in the public restrooms. I would assume that is for sanitary reasons. The paper towels are much more effective in keeping down the germs.

6. Sorry about the screw up on your anniversary cake.....it must have been frustrating to receive it a couple of days late. Maybe you should have had it delivered while in one of the alternate dining rooms (private joke just between us!) :-)

We surely enjoyed meeting you and all the others on the cruise. We have already gotten our pictures developed and are enjoying remembering all the fun we had on the cruise. Thanks for chatting with us in the Cabarat Lounge while waiting to disembark. Hope you had a safe trip home. We finally got off the ship in plenty of time to grab lunch at the airport before our flight.

Toto….you read me exactly right, thanks for your interpretation and understanding.

I especially found your statement about others being “underwhelmed” by small ships reassuring. Many passengers are thrilled with smaller ships because there are less people, BUT you are putting them into a smaller space so there are still crowds. That does not bother me. To be honest, I found the ship to feel very old and outdated. Many areas had a musty smell. The Casino is such that smoke freely drifts into the public areas especially the casino lounge, which had the best entertainment. I also felt that the staff was not a happy group, if you know what I mean, like there were some hidden agendas that the passengers did not know about. I will tell you, that while on the cruise, a 3 man team from the head office came on board and did an investigation of the ship that lasted for for a couple of days. We passengers did not know what that was about, or if it was routine. It did have the staff quite nervous. Our steward talked to us about it. Indeed, we saw one of the inspectors a couple of days later taking a survey of his cart.

The advantage to the small ships is that you can, at times, get to ports that big ships can’t tackle and the tendering process seems to be smoother.

I have enjoyed every Princess ship that we have been on and would go on any of them again, including this one, but all things being equal, it would not be my first choice.

As far as wine glasses go, we have been told by the stewards on our last 3 Princess cruises, to call room service as they no longer take care of that. You all are lucking out with your stewards!

Janet...we were not on the list for wine tasting, let me re-word that...our cabin # was not on the list for wine tasting, my quess is that it was connected to our old cabin #. We appealed to the MD at the door and he let us in after seeing our elite cards. The mail that we did not recieve was all that you mentioned, plus the wine voucher from our TA and the voucher for a free photo. I ended up going to our old cabin and asking for the vouchers from the new tenants. They gave me the wine voucher.

Thank you for your empathetic posting Molly's Mom.

Judith, I kept reading your first post, and honestly, that is kind of the way that couple we met on the Tahitian Princess felt, so I just put two and two together. :)

Sometimes if you really don't like the ship you are sailing on, little things can eat at you and compound.

At least you now know what it's like to sail on the small ships of the fleet.

For some they are a joy and a great addition to the fleet, for some it's because the itineary is just too good to pass up, and for some..........well, let's just say they don't like the small ships without all the space, and bells and whistles that go along with it. ;) We fit into the second category (our favorite ships were the Sun Class. Not too big, but not too small). :p

I think you wrote a very balanced and clear description of the things that disappointed you. On our cruise (another ship) in January our waiter looked familiar to us and we to him. We think we had him on Sitmar MANY years ago. We were talking about changes with him and, without giving us details, he said the biggest changes have been in the last 3 years. I got the feeling that there are a lot fewer staff people and so everyone is stressed. (He was still a FANTASTIC waiter!)

I have an unrelated question for you about your cabin. On the newer ships we like the aft corner cabins. (C753 etc.) We are thinking of going to Tahiti on the Royal in 2011 and the aft cabins are in the middle of the two suites as I think yours was. For some reason these cabins look longer and narrower than the side balcony cabins. Did you happen to look in any cabins on the side of the ship? Were they wider than yours?

Thanks and Happy Anniversary!

Most of the OP's issues sound like sloppy management by the Pacific's crew, except for the washcloth thing. For the life of me I can't remember getting those on any lines but HAL and Celebrity. I can certainly understand a loyal Princess cruiser being less than satisfied by the experience on one of the lines three small ships. Certainly their decor can be construed as very dated depending on your personal taste and they are more in tune with the cruise experience of a decade or two ago rather than the upbeat tempo of the large ships. With that said, we like that experience as well as the large ship product. I guess experience helps us adapt and enjoy the various shipboard environments.

As I am sure everyone is aware your view of a ship is always subjective. We have sailed on the Pacific Princess before (when it was the R3 in the Renaissance fleet). I have to say I loved the ship as much this time as back in 2000. I did not feel it was outdated.....actually it has sort of a boutique feel. We never felt crowded, there were some days we wondered if even half the ship was filled.

The crew was fantastic, we loved almost every one that we encountered. Actually the only crew members we had a problem with were the ship photographers.....they were down right rude. There were people complaining about the staff at the Purser's Desk and again whenever I had a need to visit them they were polite and handled the issue in a very professional manner.

I would not hesitate to sail on the Pacific Princess again in the future or any of the other small ships in the Princess fleet.

Sorry guys ~ forget the wash cloths, forget the wine glasses, forget the elevator issue, forget the ship being outdated, forget that they did not get the invite for wine tasting, but holy moly to forget someone's anniversary cake at dinner for an anniversary..now I call that not consistent service from Princess. I was recently on a ship (competitor ) and I was thrilled to have my birhtday cake with candles presented at my dinner. You know what it was in their computer. On this sailing Princess let you down and it can happen on any ship any line. you were disappointed and rightfully so.

Who is to know if Judy had walking problems and relied on the elevator? Who are we to question if that was not an inconvenience? Judy was merely saying that things were not the same as she had experienced on previous Princess cruises.

I for one have never had a bad experience, does not mean I have noticed that "things" have changed a bit on several recent different lines I have cruised with. Some people want to discuss their experiences nothing wrong with that. To some it might be nit-picking, but to me she is just sharing and she never said her cruise was bad.

Come on folks let CC be a place where people can feel comfortable and share what their experience was. JMHO

I think there was an expectation issue here.

I agree - some of the items were not import IMO but I think it was the overall experience that was disappointing to the cruiser and with out being able to pinpoint that feeling, the other items came out.

To some extent - Princess can be blamed. All of Princess's Grand class ships are almost the same. You go from one ship to another and there is very little change. All of a sudden we have several posters who have only done Grand class ships who are going on the Sun class ships and are disappointed. I doubt the Sun Class ships have gone down in quality - it is just different from the other ships.

When one books the smaller ships - they really need to know what they are getting into. I haven't been on a smaller Princess ship yet (I wish I could as I think I would like them) but I did take a river cruise a few years ago with about 200 people. I was one of the few who was not disappointed in the ship itself and it was because I knew what I was getting into to. I knew entertainment was piano playing or bilini making and that education was going to be a teacher and that at any given time, there was just one activity going on - not 12.

If anything - I think the OP learned from this experience and probably will research more before they book a different kind of ship.

That's EXACTLY how we feel!

A few more thoughts on the op's initial post

These days so much more is controlled by the Princess home office than onboard.

Whether you like it or not, you need to follow through with your requests.

If it's the little things that will make or break your overall cruise..

then YOU take control.

Have a print out of your personalizer showing what you ordered, have hard copies of any email communications. Speak with the Head Waiter about your celebration. Tell your cabin steward.... for you to have the perfect cruise experience you want extra glasses DAILY, an extra blanket, pillows whatever...

just don't assume that your needs, wants and wishes were communicated thoroughly between corporate office, online requests and the ships crew onboard

Yes, it would be nice that it would, but whether you travel by land or ship

you need to take the reigns to insure your vacation is what you want to the best of your ability (doing so in the nicest way possible, of course!)

No, it didn't use to be this way..but cruising was ALOT more money in the past and attention to detail on EVERY line was more consistent.

Also, please people..do your homework on the smaller ships thoroughly..I read on another thread that they were mad they didn't get a FREE pot of coffee in the mini suites...well, it's only for the full suite. Learn how the Elite benefits are now working..each ship is different..on the Pacific Princess they started the policy of just showing your card for wine tasting and tenders, long before the rest of the fleet did. As I said each ship is unique!

Princess isn't perfect and neither are any of us.

So, before you point fingers of what they did wrong

make sure you did all you could do to make your vacation go right

You can have a FREE pot of coffee delivered from Room Service 24 hours a day in any room on the ship!

hhhmmm maybe it was a full breakfast...it was something the suites get not the mini suites and they were ticked..

and since I dont drink straight coffee and I'm not traveling in a full suite.. maybe my memory is off...

I'll go search for the post

I would guess it was a full breakfast, or full room service menu service. Since many sites advertise mini suites on Princess as 'suites' it can get a bit confusing to those new to Princess. We often find members here that booked a mini for the first time and ask about a full room service menu they can order from. And to their displeasure, we have to alert them to the fact that their room service will be the same as those that booked an inside, outside, or balcony stateroom.
