New york which airport

It's been almost 25 years since I last had to deal with NYC or NJ traffic - so can someone tell me how long it would take to get from W51st street in NYC to JFK airport for a 6:30pm flight to Spain on the Friday after Thanksgiving in a taxi? We got a great deal, $200 pp less than flying out of Newark, so I can't pass that up!

a week. Friday after thanksgiving is known as black Friday. Its the most crowded sale day and everyone is in NY for the Holiday.

you need to be at the airport for an international flight 2 hours before it leaves. It will take between an hour and an hour an a half. so that means you leave no later than three.....

yes that really should be fine. Its only about an hour and a half flight from Detroit and in October there won't be more than a foot of snow by you. I always find that the first flights in the morning make it out pretty much on time.

I had to sell 5 shopping centers in Detroit to Al Taubman so I have spent my time in Detroit...

you know the joke...

The first prize in the contest was one week all expense paid trip to Detroit second prize was two weeks....

im leaving from detroit metro but i would rather fly the same day if i can find a flight at 7 or 8 am and i dont think the weather is going to b bad in oct that is when im going oct 4 that is a sunday so ur thinking newerk is good then

We flew out of Detroit Metro last October on a Sunday at 6:55 am (day of our Dawn cruise out of Manhattan.) We ended up getting dirt cheap airfare to JFK on Delta. After getting some great advice on the East Coast Departures board here at Cruise Critic we ended up taking the Skytrain to Jamaica station, then the Long Island Railroad into Manhattan and finally a taxi to the pier. We each had a large suitcase and a carry on and had no issues at all. We took a taxi to the pier and arrived by 10:30 am. Let me say, we usually don't ever fly day of cruise (it's a gamble even in October) but it couldn't be helped this time around.

The day we left to come home we simply walked across the street from the ship caught a taxi to the train station and did the whole thing in reverse. I'd do it again without hesitation. We found it all very easy.

:DLMAO Detroit is as far south as northern California. It's often still in the high 70's and sometimes 80's in October.:D

Fog on the other hand....

Southwest Airlines flies into Long Island (ISP). Is that a viable option for a TA arriving in NYC in mid-November?

its a long way from Islip to Manhattan. The only "mass transit" is a bus or a cab to I think the Ronkonkama Station. Since the likelihood of snow is small, you should be ok but it will take a couple of hours(the train schedule isn't great)

# To NYC by Train

There is shuttle service from MacArthur Airport to the nearby Ronkonkoma train station:

Colonial Transportation of Long Island offers convenient shuttle service between MacArthur Airport and the Ronkonkoma train station (LIRR). The shuttle van departs the train station daily at 5:30am, then departs the airport on the hour and half-hour from 6:00am until 10:30pm. Curbside pick up at the airport is directly in front of baggage claim. The shuttle will pick up and drop off at the North Platform of the Ronkonkoma train station. The one-way fare is $5.00 per person. Cash and credit cards are accepted. All rates are subject to change without notice. The Suffolk County Bus Transit also offers hourly service to and from MacArthur Airport to the train station with the S-57 Bus except Sundays and(No service, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas). The fare is $1.50.The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) offers frequent service to Penn Station in Manhattan from the Ronkonkoma train station The train ride is approximately one hour and 25 minutes. The train fare currently $9.75 (non-rush hour times) into the city will take you to Penn station which is located in Manhattan at 33rd street and 7th Avenue. From there you can get to your ultimate destination by subway or by taxi.

I look at it across the river almost every day of my life. There's plenty to love about this area.

1. I was obviously kidding.

2. Honestly its the only place in the US I really hate. Downtown rolls up its sidewalks at 5. No one goes downtown(except maybe to look it at across the river)

3. this is off topic.

Since you don't live here it's only fair that you don't get the last word:). Actually downtown has undergone a revitalization in recent years. Three downtown casinos, the beautiful Fox Theater, the Detroit Opera House, Greektown, Ford Field (home of the ... cough cough... Lions), Comerica Park, Detroit Institute of Arts, etc. Weekend evenings are actually quite bustling these days.

EWR is definitely closest; also they have a shuttle tram (monorail) that connects from the airport;you buy a ticket for the monorail and New Jersey transit train; take Monorail to the station, then board an EAST bound train to NYC and get off at Penn Station; from penn station you can get a taxi to take you to the port. Or just take a taxi from the airport to the port; or if dealing with a TA call and ask them to arrange something for you or call your cruise line -- they will be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

EWR is definitely closest; ...

what part of 8.18 miles vs 16 miles don't you understand?

as the crow flies its even less....from LGA than EWR.....

EWR is the most expensive by either cab or car service. You in fact can do LGA for $2.00 each way(I wouldn't) you take the city bus to the E/f train station and take the e train to 50th street and eighth avenue and either walk or take another bus to the corner of 51st and 12th avenue...

EWR is definitely closest to Port Liberty only....

"Its 8.18 (this corrects my previous post by the Bridge) miles from LGA to the Cruise terminal. Its 16.05 miles from EWR to the cruise terminal and its 19.43 miles from JFK. But this morning there is a 40 minutes wait at the Lincoln tunnel into Manhattan(not unusual at this time in the am on a weekday).(exact mileage is from map quest to the cruise terminal in Manhattan.. the cruise terminal's address is 711 12th avenue.)

He may have been talking about the part of the 8.18 miles that goes through the center of Manhattan during rush hour . . . :o

yes but then if its rush hour you have to cross the Hudson to NY which is what most people complain about. Manhattan's streets(vs the highway) during rush hour are not normally that bad....and most of the back up is either to or from NJ....or on the BQE which you avoid from LGA if you go the Queensboro Bridge.

This am the GW was backed up for an hour and the Lincoln tunnel its normal 40 minutes. Riding the NJ Transit train during rush hour is fun...

and as I said before shortest in distance doesn't mean shortest in time. but LGA is still physically closest.

in the most ideal of situations...LGA is the best option! it's so quick with no traffic.

i still love my EWR...but working in manhattan i have learned much about the other 2 airports.

We are taking our first cruise on NCL and I understand one of their selling points is that they transfer you to and from the airline for free. Did I miss something in their literature? They did mention on the phone that they only transfer to LGA and not JFK when they arrive back in NY from our B2B cruise to Russia.:)

hmmmm...i'm not sure if the transfers are free. perhaps it's part of the air/sea package?

my DW and i purchased transfers from MIA to the FLL airport upon our return from the Bahamas. we probably couldn't have gone cheaper, i suppose. but we just called out PCC and he charged us a fee and now NCL will be taking us on the shuttle to the airport.

i think you can get transfers to either airport.

Transfers would normally be included only if you purchased their air/sea package. Otherwise you can purchase transfers.

I have no doubt that they do not have transfers available to JFK, because there are relatively few domestic flights leaving from JFK (compared to LGA and EWR). It's quite likely that NCL does not offer an air/sea option for flights departing from JFK...hence no transfers available to that airport.

I highly doubt they were free. In fact, after most people take the time to price them compared to a cab, they realize that the cab is cheaper.

And, for us anyways, even if transfers were cheaper I doubt I would take them. You have to wait for the bus to FILL. And wait for Aunt Millie to go potty or get her "I Love NY" t-shirts. And, and, and.

We just walk out, get a cab and away we go.
