We (the 3 of us) will be in Naples on August 19 for a day and would like to link up with a guide to take us on a half-day tour to Pompeii and and nearby areas; suggestions/recommendations will be welcome.

thanks.

We used AP Tours for the day and a private guide at Pompeii and had a fantastic time. This was all arranged by someone we met on Roll Call who had two extra spaces in their van. This tour could not have been any better. We did Pompeii first (no crowds and a private guide) then The Amilfi Coast to wander in Positano. We had lunch high above Positano at Trattoria La Tagliata (family style service and you eat what you get..FANTASTIC!). We then went to Sorrento for some time on our own and was escorted to the ferry back to Naples (it avoided the heavy traffic we would have encountered on the road). The ferry docked beside the ship.

Please check your Roll Call for suggestions and also link up with others if you want to decrease the price of the tour. We also a tour in Nice with the same Roll Call family and had a wonderful time.

I used Salvatore from DriveAmalfi. He was wonderful! Be aware that in Italy the driver/guides cannot give you a tour of the historical sites. It costs about 100 euros for a licensed guide of Pompeii. We did not hire a Pompeii guide and feel we made a mistake. Pompeii is huge and can be overwhelming.

I have been a long time supporter for APTours. We used them (also with a roll call group) for our tour of the area in Nov. 07.

Just to reiterate a point some new posters need to know:

A driver does just that - he drives you from Point A to B to C etc....

He/she cannot give tours of the historic areas (like Pompeii etc.) Usually they will give you some background info on the area and some brief history as they drive but do not look for unending narrative :o

A guide (in Italy) must be licensed and will have a nice little badge with their picture on it. They must be tested extensively in order to get that designation. They can go into the historic areas and give guided tours.

So, when booking a "tour" you need to ask if you are getting a driver or a guide or a driver/guide (more $$$).

Just so you know ;)

I would suggest Romeinlimo and my FAVORITE guide would happen to be Raffaelo. Also... he set us up with Lucia at Pompeii. We ended up setting up our own day with the company and the guides we got were the best. A friend of mine just got back from Naples and he was able to get our same guide. He had a great day also. Gorgeous area! I am jealous I am not going again.
