Alaska weather in August

What can I expect?

What locations in Alaska are you interested in? Take a look at a map of Alaska superimposed over a map of the lower 48 states and you will see how vast an area you are talking about and how much weather can vary from one region to another. There are websites that can tell you what the average temperatures and rainfall have been in various locations but there is no guarantee that average will be what you encounter. Just look at the weather we in New England experienced this past June. In no way did it resemble the averages you would find in any almanac for this region.

Dress in layers and you will be pretty well prepared for whatever weather conditions you encounter. If you are out on deck near the glaciers, a hat, gloves and windbreaker or sweatshirt might be appropriate. Elsewhere you might be comfortable in shorts and a short sleeved shirt. Daylight hours will have begun to diminish as you approach mid and late August and again those hours will vary according to whether you are in Fairbanks or Ketchikan at the time.

Enjoy Alaska. It is a remarkable and beautiful state and well worth the visit regardless of the weather.:)
