We will be taking a train from Quebec to Montreal where we want to stay 2 nights, then a train to Albany. We need sugestions for a Hotel in Montreal where we will have access to the train station but equally as important we want to be where we can experience Montreal. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you'd like to get away from the big chain hotels and try something a little European, the Hotel de la Montagne is super. Small boutique hotel just one street over from Crescent Street. Elegant art deco lobby, large rooms, great restaurant and rooftop terrace. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Easy walk to the Metro.

On our May repositioning cruise on the Maasdam we stayed at the Marriott Springhill Suites. Great location in Old Montreal. Right room and you can see the Maasdam arrive.

Very nice full complimentary breakfast, nice rooms, restaurant and lounge.

Have a great cruise.

I always stay at the Residence Inn by Marriott. It's right Downtown and walking distance to almost everything. It also has a pretty good complementary breakfast.

Montreal is one of my favourite cities. Enjoy!

The Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth hotel, as mentioned above, is located directly above the platform at Gare Centrale (Central Station) where your Québec City train will arrive, and your Amtrak train (The Adirondack) will depart (and no, you don't hear the trains from your hotel suite! :-) )

Vieux Port Montréal is a very short cab ride (or walk for that matter) away.

I can recommend the Hotel Nelligan. It's a beautiful and historic small hotel with a wonderful staff. We were able to walk to the Maasdam, pushing our suitcases along with us. It took only a few minutes.

We sailed the Eurodam last Sept. and also took the train from Montreal to Quebec. We stayed at the Queen Elizabeth and were very plesed with the location. We were there when a major strike was taking place at the hotel. It just added another dimension to our stay. The hotel has a direct elevator to the undergroud food and shopping mall as well as the train station. We would stay at the "Quennie" if we ever have the chance to go back.

Enjoy your trip.

May 4 - Glad to hear that recommendation for the Hotel Nelligan. We're staying there for 2 nights in October after a cruise ending in Quebec City. (Taking train from Quebec City to Montreal)

Thanks!

You're going to love it!!!! I'll bet you've already looked at the pictures on their website. Well, the hotel's even prettier in person.

The wine and cheese reception was lovely, the turndown service elaborate, the tubs and toiletries wonderful.

Enjoy.:)

Another vote for Hotel Nelligan. We have not stayed there but our friends did. They cruised with us Boston to Montreal and then left the ship. We went with them to their hotel and found it to offer great service, included breakfast, at Old Montreal. We were staying aboard for the next cruise so did not stay there with them but they told us they enjoyed their two night stay post cruise.

If stay in one of the hotels at the train station will we be able to get the whole feel of Montreal, it looks like they are not exactly in the "action area"?

Absolutely ... Montréal has a very simple Metro (subway system) for further jaunts afield which is also easily accessible from the hotel, but even only if you are interested in the basics - shopping on rue Ste-Catherine or Sherbrooke, touring the Old Port (Vieux Port), or taking in any of Montréal's festivals (Juste pour Rire aka the Montréal Comedy Festival is currently on right now), the Queen Elizabeth is very convenient and quite walkable.

Depending on your political persuasion, this may or may not be a selling point, but is an interesting factoid nonetheless. The Queen E is where John Lennon and Yoko Ono has their rather [in]famous bed-in for peace, and their song Give Peace a Chance was recorded by the CBC (and others) from their hotel room (rm 1742) in 1969.

Bonne chance!

Scott.
