safe in rooms

I am wondering about the safes in the rooms on the ship Destiny. Is it the kind that has the buttons, or do you need to swipe a credit card thru it. The room is a suite, if that makes any difference?

The Destiny safe uses a card with a magnetic stripe.

Pretty much any card will do. DO NOT use your Sail and Sign card. A gift card of any kind will work well...

:)

Hey Mach,

Why not use your sail and sign card? Just curious. I brought an old gift card and it didn't work!! Luckily I had my company gas card and used it.

Because if you use you S&S card, and lose it, and someone finds it and gets into your room, then they can also get into your safe. If you use a different card, then they cannot get into your safe.

That is not going to happen. How would they know what Stateroom went with the S&S card, your Stateroom number is not on it. When you loose and or find that your S&S card does not work for whatever reason, they give you a new one.

But you should not use your S&S card as it can be demagnetized and you have to get a new one. Then you have to go through the trouble of using it for your safe and it has to be deprogrammed first. Just bring a couple of gift cards from home, hopefully one of them will work.

Can someone explain this gift card business for use on a safe? How is that secure? How does the safe read the info and what is the process like. A gift card doesn't have name attached to it.

Your right it does not have a name on it, but it does have an electronic strip that you can use to open and close your safe. Every card that has an electronic strip are different, so therefor you can use it to open your safe. It reads the strip just like it would read your S&S card.

Does that make any sense?

The safe has a magnetic strip reader, when you swipe it the first time it logs it as the default correct info(whatever the info is). The safe's system is set up to reprogram with each new guest and the programing is done only with the safe door open.

Whatever card you use you may have to throw it away after the cruise because the magnetic strip will demagnitize it. I use gift cards with $0 balance on it so I can just throw it away after the cruise.

Just curiuos, If you use a gift card and it gets lost, you will not be able to opent the safe. If you lose your S&S card, you can ask the pursers desk for a replacement and opening the safe will not be an issue. I am thinking using the S&S card is a better choice. What do you guys think?

Hopefully you can keep your S&S & gift card together in a lil lanyard, pocket or something that you carry around on board. That's what I do. I keep both cards, a lil cash all together.

You can always go to the purser's desk or call them if you have a safe problem - my friends safe was a bit 'tempermental' and they had to come open it for her a couple of times.

I just grab a 'blank' gift card from wherever I might be - okay I choose the prettiest one! and keep it for cruising (last one was a lovely pink hologram heart gift card from Chapters - Starbucks has some nice ones too!) Then you don't need to worry about a balance or losing it!

I have been using my sail and sign card for years on cruises on Carnival without a problem. It does not get demagnitised by the safe. The safe is only a reader. If you lose your S&S card you will need to get the safe opened by the staff and then use the new card to lock it again. They recommend not to use the S&S, don't know why, I've never had a problem. Only one card to carry then.

We are going to use a gift card, put it in a safe place that is hidden and leave it in our Stateroom. That way if my DH and I are not together, which is very possible, and we need to get into the safe, we can.

We did use our S&S card when we went to Hawaii and on the Splendor they had a key pay but since I have read so many posts to not use the S&S card we are going to go with the gift card.

The housekeeping staff have key cards that will open any cabin. I can't help but believe that the same might be true of the safe if you activate it with your Sail & Sign card.

I've never had reason to distrust any of the housekeeping staff but it's one less thing to worry about...

Exactly- and I wonder if this isn't the real reason they tell you not to use your S&S card, since everyone knows they can duplicate the card, and they don't want the possibility of someone making accusations if something comes up missing. Regardless, Im with you, and it isn't worth taking the chance.

I plan to take two identical cards (they are a land-casino membership card that I had them duplicate when I left one at home), that way we will both have access to the safe- and no one else will!

Every card has a different magnetic strip. How then would housekeeping be able to use their card to open the safe? Their card only opens the doors to the Staterooms, they can not open the safes, it is imposssible. If that were the case, the staff would have access to every safe on the ship, and that would never happen

I do agree that you should not use your S&S card to open and close the safe though.

Pegs- I don't know how the housekeeping cards work. But Im thinking the sign&sail cards are like the casino cards that I have- they are essentially "blank" until they are "programmed." So they can be duplicated.

Edit to add- why does it matter? They tell you in very strong terms NOT to use your sign&sail card for the safe. So why would you want to defy that and take the chance?

Not necessarily- they could possibly have access to a safe that is locked with a S&S card though. I don't know, but again, that's a chance I choose not to take.

No, because every strip is different. But I do not understand how one card fits all for housekeeping though, so my theory may be wrong LOL.
