Opposite *elegant* night dilemma

Those are numers for about 500 people from these boards, and on some ships there are over 3000 cruisers, very small percentage.

Read it like you'd like.

Bottom line - I'll be wearing my tux onboard.

Will I be in "the 5%", as some say? Don't care. I'll look good. :D

I'm wearing the same dress I wore for my daughter's wedding. For what I paid for that puppy it needs to be worn more than once.

If you have a tux, by all means go for it, how often do you get to wear one?

Haven't cruised on Carnival since 2006, but it did appear that the tux/ultra formal gowns were in the minority. However they did look really, really nice, and they did not stick out in a bad way. And, how often do you get to dress up for dinner and have the "paparazzi" snap your picture in your finest all night? :D

To the OP

I understand the need to consolidate luggage. I am certianly packing less this year but........

If he wants to wear his tux please let him... I would LOVE mine to wear a tux but alas it has not happened (YET). This year it looks like the whole group of guys we travel with might ALL wear tuxes.. how fun will that be..

Every cruise we do see people in tuxes and in Military Uniform and everyone always comments on how nice they look and I have to agree they do..

Will he be just fine without it ... sure.. but how often do you really get to wear it . It's vacation let him wear his tux ;)

Who cares what others think/do? Although DH doesn't have tux, he will be wearing dressy black suit, and DD and self will be in "special occasion" dresses.

Cigar - I'm sure you do look good in tux.

I still wear a long gown and my husband wears his tux for every formal/elegant night. We do get a lot of nice comments and we really don't have any other place to do this. We think it's fun and if the clothes fit then they should be just as comfortable as any other less formal clothes.

I wear a tuxedo or white dinner jacket for "Cruise Elegant" night and I will until we stop cruising. DW usually wears a very elegant cocktail length dress as she is only 4'10" and it is almost impossible to find a long dress that looks good on her. We did find one this spring and she will be wearing it one night on our cruise on the Pride.

We enjoy dressing nicely. There are always enough people dressed decently so one does not feel like the odd man out.

A thought here: I suspect that those who see very few folks wearing formal wear, suits and ties, etc. are the people who do not wear a suit on formal night. Years of investigative experience has taught me that people see what they want to see.

We're experienced cruisers but haven't been on Carnival in a while. We're sailing on the Pride in a few weeks.

My DH is adament we need to bring the usual stuff for formal night. Tux for him and DS and long dresses for DD and myself.

The more I read, the more I'm afraid he may be the only person onboard wearing a tux. He doesn't seem to think there's anything wrong with that, but I would love to leave the entire suitcase it takes to house all the necessary formal stuff for four people at home. I think being with Carnival may make that possible.

While it seems that most are trying to justify dressing more casually for formal (um, elegant) night, MY husband doesn't want to leave home without his tuxedo.

I'm sure many will say wear whatever makes you happy...but I will not be happy if we are in such a minority that it is painfully obvious.

Will we look so out place on the Pride next month in our full formal regalia? (Gosh I hope those that have sailed recently will say yes so I can show him this).

Thanks!

Your DH will not be the only one in a tux. While I'm prepared to guess at percentages of tux wearers...there are some that do and some that don't. I think a guy in a tux looks great! If my DH had a tux he would take it!

Will you be out of place in your formal wear - no. The majority won't be in long formal gowns and tuxes but you won't be alone!

On our recent Glory cruise, most of the people we saw dressed very nicely for the elegant nights. I saw some tuxes, lots of suits and long dresses/gowns. I was surprised at how many people dressed up (we did!!) especially considering how casual most people dressed the other nights. I don't think you'd stand out in your tux at all, IMO.

I plan on wearing a tux on our upcoming cruise. I don't care if a lot of other do or not. My wife and I enjoy dressing up a little for diner on the ship every night and going formal on the two formal (whatever - elegant) nights. We get to update some pictures around the house with each cruise. There was a poll on the site a week or so ago about this. I think it was say about 18% of the people were saying they would wear a tux and formal dress. It was about 40% for wearing a suit and nice dress. So it was almost 60% of the people dressing up nicely, and almost a 33% of those people wearing tux and formals. As I said I love the chance to do the formal nights so I doing the tux and don't care if other do or not. Happy Cruising.

Something I learnt in Stat class:

Liars can Figure and Figures can Lie. :p

OP- If you have the room, go for it. There is some level of comfort in family traditions.

In the opposite end of the spectrum my DH won't even wear a tie for CE night anymore. Nice Dockers and a button-down for him. Last 7-day cruise we saw a few in tuxes.

seriously! i don't get it... what makes a dress 'formal'? puffy, frilly, sequins, long, black, not black, or any other number of characteristics that have never even crossed my mind? what's the difference between a 'dress' and a 'gown', assuming we're not talking about stuff from the victorian era?

to me, a dress is a dress... ;)

but i admit, i totally don't know

I'd be interested to know too and I'm female! How bad is that? I make up my own definitions lol. A sundress are the cotton cheapy ones. A cocktail dress comes to your knees and is made of something other than cotton. Anything else is a gown. But, I made that up and I have no idea what's the "real" marker between a dress/gown?

This is why I wear pants. Dresses make me

How long since your last cruise? We have been surprised by the amount of casual wear now on Elegant night.

Recently on the Spirit in Alaska I toned down my clothing also not wanting to appear overdressed ....DUH WRONG

Everyone was lining up for pictures fancy night all decked out .I had nice long dresses but not gowns but plenty of those around ...Alaska was SUpposed to be Xtra casual and quiet at night ....WRONG again...people stayed up late and it was lively at the comedy shows after 11;30 and casino

I got to know the Maitre D and the hostesses quite well ...THEY appreciate people dressing up and notice...I wish I had brought more of my cuter as opposed to casual clothes.I have some real nice embroidered capris and tops....next time!!!

During the day CASUAL is the way .For Alaska my best bet was my jogging suits ,....fleece kind for colder days ...comfort was the goal..with T shirts ..layers according to weather

Now I know I will take NICE clothing on all my cruises for night time..I hear in South America people really dress up so I will too besides I ENJOY IT!!!!

Dress for yourself and your style.I think cruising gives me the opportunity to doll up and I like that ...how often other then for weddings or formal events does one do that in everyday life .It also gives me an excuse to buy fancier clothes ...I just bought 2 for 2 weddings which I will take on future cruises ....I really had them in mind when I purchased them ..so not bridesmaidy but fancy enough

On Grand Princess it was a fashion show every night ...our tablemates had some real nice outfit plus we were invited by 1 couple to celebrate their wdding anniversary.I was REAL happy I brought the clothes I enjoy smart elegant style

I agree suits are BULKY ...I did not take one for my son but I will for our next cruise

Hope this helps

We always dress up and Jeff always wears his tux. We just purchased a new one for him.

I do not wear an evening gown, just palazzo pants with a beautiful top.

We always take pictures so that we can remember the cruise

Enjoy no matter what you wear!

I love to see men in tuxedo's, or military dress uniforms.

My husband didn't take his tux last year, but since the first "elegant" evening is our Anniversary, I might be able to convince him differently this year .

My husband is Scottish so always wears his kilt and Bonnie Prince Charlie jacket to the formal/elegant nights. I usually wear a long dress (but it doesn't really matter what I wear as I'm usually ignored next to him!).

It's part of our holiday, dressing for dinner and we enjoy ourselves. It doesn't bother what others wear as that's up to them but I must say all guys look great in a tux.

Not me. I look to see how many ARE wearing jackets/ties/suits to cajole DH into wearing a tie. DH without a tie is in the minority, but his minority is a lot larger than the tux wearing minority.

On another note- I never noticed people's shoes in the MDR until I started reading this board. :p

My Dad wears his Tux every cruise. He looks handsome in it and I am proud to be with him (I would be proud though no matter what he wore, I love my Dad). He is not the only one but he doesn't care if he was the only one.

How wonderful! I bet your husband is pretty darn sexy in that Kilt :D. Ralph was our CD last year, and I loved seeing him in his kilt.

We rarely have the chance to get all "dressed-up", and I truly enjoy having the opportunity of putting on the Ritz (well.... my husband isn't as excited as I am).

But, if the Momma ain't happy, no-one is happy LOL........
