seedawgs Posted August 25, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 25, 2009 Due to a back injury we may have to cancel a Celebrity Cruise. Our TA says a penalty of $900 (which is 2X our deposit) will apply 30 days before departure. Celebrity's site states loss of deposit is applicable. Anybody know what the real answer is? If we are in the 29-15 day before departure window Celebrity's site shows 50% of the cruise cost will be lost. Does this include Port Fees and taxes? We are still on the fence about canceling, any help would be appreciated. Thanks, The SeeDawgs
Gonzo70 Posted August 25, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 25, 2009 If the deposit is $450 per person, than $900 would be correct (assuming two of you are canceling). What was the deposit amount per person?
leeanninfla Posted August 25, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 25, 2009 Cancellation is the per person deposit up until day 30. So if your deposit was $450 per person, then that is the cancellation fee. As well as whatever the TA charges. Due to a back injury we may have to cancel a Celebrity Cruise. Our TA says a penalty of $900 (which is 2X our deposit) will apply 30 days before departure. seedawgs Posted August 25, 2009 Author #4 Share Posted August 25, 2009 Total deposit was $450. TA says this was a promotional item and deposit would have been $900. I guess a deal is not a deal. The web site does not have fine print that I can see stating that promotional fees don't apply. Also TA clarified: a. port charges are non-refundable b. taxes are refundable. Oh well, what a pain in the lower back! Still trying to figure out whether to sail or stay
leeanninfla Posted August 25, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 25, 2009 Unfortunately yes, you are subject to the $900 deposit. Celebrity and a number of cruise lines have been doing reduced deposit promotions, which helps when making reservations, less money to put down, but unfotunately that does't help when you have to cancel as normal cancellation fees will apply. Unless you just really can't move, are confined to a bed, or the doctor says don't go, then go on your cruise, spend extra time in the hot tub, it will probably help. OF course you are still a ways out, your back could be better by then. Did you get insurance? If so, and the doc says no go, then cancel and let the insurance company reimburse you. 6rugrats Posted August 25, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 25, 2009 IME, cruiselines are pretty much inflexible when it comes to cancellations and will not budge, no matter what the reason. I really hope you purchased trip insurance for this.
seedawgs Posted August 26, 2009 Author #7 Share Posted August 26, 2009 Latest update. Cancelled cruise with $450 deposit the only penalty. This was after a phone call to the line. TA called and they came to this conclusion Checked on other lines. Their policies say something like the "Brochure Deposit amount" or only talk in percentages of the cruise price. Celebrities policy only discussed THE DEPOSIT with no clarification or fine print referral to brochure deposit amount. Just wanted you all to know where this ended up. Definitely varies from one line to another.

Moeve Posted August 28, 2009 #10 Share Posted August 28, 2009 Sorry I only saw this so late but why on earth didn't you just rescheduale the cruise - in most cases this only costs a small fee and this is possibly even covered by your insurance.... Rare jimbo5544 Posted August 28, 2009 #11 Share Posted August 28, 2009 Think the other thing you might want to take away from this is consider insurance....
