janecambridge Posted June 28, 2015 #1 Share Posted June 28, 2015 Does anyone know if there is anywhere from Nuremberg to Budapest where we can have a river swim? Thanks.
Rare steamboats Posted June 28, 2015 #2 Share Posted June 28, 2015 Definitely don´t try to swim neither in the Canal nor in the Danube river!!! The current is tricky and there´s a lot of traffic on this navigable part of the river. Swimming is extremly dangerous when you don´t know the area and the river. steamboats
Floridiana Posted June 28, 2015 #3 Share Posted June 28, 2015 There is a public bath on the "Alte Donau" (Old Danube, a billabong), run by the city of Vienna. It's not in the shipping lanes. http://www.wien-konkret.at/sport/schwimmbad/strandbad-alte-donau/ There are probably others in other cities, but not directly in the main part of the river, too dangerous as steamboats has already said. Im_not_creative Posted June 28, 2015 #4 Share Posted June 28, 2015 In Vienna, you can swim in many places on the opposite side of the Donauinsel from the main river. Just cross the nearest bridge from where you will be moored, and you are on the Donauinsel (a 22km long, 200-300m wide artificial island built in the 60's for flood control purposes, and now a major park). The stretch of water the other side is calm, with no traffic on most of it, and plenty of swimming places. I took one of the bikes from the boat and did that on the afternoon of our day in Vienna. Just be aware that some parts are naturist, and the cycle path goes straight through them - if you see the letters FKK on the path, then you are approaching such an area. janecambridge Posted June 29, 2015 Author #5 Share Posted June 29, 2015 Thank you.I obviously wouldn't swim in the main river with passing boats, but Vienna on a bike with a swim sounds perfect in this hot weather. Thank you Im_Not_Creative for the tips...:)
