Meals on Viking

we recently did a Viking immediately followed by a Cunard

 

V was at least as good, and in some ways better than what we experienced on QM2 ....

 

BUT each ship has its own head chef so there is no gaur'tee. But on V (ATLA) our head chef was very personable and came to talk to us frequently. He even led an excursion to a farmers market in Vienna . . .

 

One of the BIG advantages of a ship with a couple of hundred pass' versus one with a few thousand . . .

Our first river cruise, we are cruising Cities of Lights in November.

Hubby and I are just wondering what you might think of the food on Viking Ships?

We will be on the Odin Longship.

Our first river cruise, we are cruising Cities of Lights in November.

i hope you are lucky enough to enjoy the same Head chef we had on the Odin in May. He was personable, visited our table often and excelled at his work.

 

Every meal was delicious and while I know the soup chef and the dessert chef work their own magic, given that everything was wonderful, leads me to believe that they were overseen by the Head Chef.

Food is sooooooo subjective. I am not a foodie and I didn't have a meal on my cruise that I didn't think was great BUT I'm sure others found fault with something or other. I do remember that one lady from Chicago was convinced that the German food at home was much better than the food she was eating in Germany.

Food on Viking?

 

With the proviso that so much depends on one's own particular tastes, likes and dislikes, I was pleased with it.

 

Plenty of choice, either formal restaurant with waiter service or informal buffet in lounge. WE tended to have a simple breakfast in lonunge, then check at lunchtime whether to sit in restaurant or have buffet in lounge, usually chose the lounge where we could sit outside.

 

Dinner we always had in restaurant, 4 courses, choices on each and if none attract there's always steak, chicken or caesar salad to order.

 

Regional dishes and sveral 'special' evening menus. And plenty of wine.

Funny you should say that. I wasn't impressed with the pastries in Germany off the ship. The rest of the German good was great, not the desserts.

At least from the cafes I went to.

 

The food on Viking was all very good. Only had one thing I didn't like and it was a tuna tatare that was offered as a pre appetizer.

 

There are plenty off choices every night.

Hi, I have a unique perspective on the Viking meals. We just finished the Grand European Tour, Budapest to Amsterdam, from 8/8 to 8/22. We experienced a ship swap from Viking Skadi to sister ship Bragi (more about that later) and there was a definite difference in the caliber of food (and this was expressed by just about every passenger). Skadi's chef was very innovative with incredible food choices at every meal. While Bragi's food was acceptable, it certainly, with the exceptions of German food night, surf and turf, and chateaubriand, did not hold a candle to Skadi's food. Example, our first meal was ALL things mushrooms--EVERY dish-with the exception of the always available-- contained copious amounts of mushrooms. I ordered deconstructed mushroom lasagna which came as two DEEP FRIED mushrooms (deep fried was not even mentioned on the written menu ) on top of a creamy sauce over a pile of noodles. The chef must have had a good deal on fungi because they appeared at every meal for the rest of the cruise even with a caprese salad. We certainly didn't starve but it's pretty obvious that food is heavily influenced by the executive chef.

Can you order more than one entree on a river cruise like you can on an ocean cruise?

 

We had no problem doing so on Uniworld this month. If there was a risotto or pasta entree we requested an extra serving to split among those of us at our table who wanted the meat or fish entree with a 'taste' of the risotto or pasta on the side.

On Viking we often ordered two starters or two mains, or two desserts. Never a question. Everything is pre-plated though so you get the whole plate, not just the part you might like to try.
