Room service and to go food

"I am on the Gem right now. I asked at guest services about this and they told me the room service charge will go into effect next cruise (May 2) and it is true that restaurants will no longer let you take leftovers back to your cabin or have them sent there."

It's really stupid. I can't see them reinforcing this. What if I'm full and want it in a doggy bag. Just wanted to pass along for information.

So one wouldn't be able to go to the buffet and bring it back to one's cabin? Ludicrous.

In the Gem in November after a couple of late nights in the casino I would stop at Blue Lagoon/ O'Sheehans and get a snack. Not sure who, at the hour, would be around to stop me from going back to my room with it.

I expect the company wants to say that it is not allowed and make it more difficult to do because I imagine that this has already become more and more popular with guests who still prefer to eat in their cabin and avoiding the room service fee just go to a venue and pick it up themselves.

Obviously not enough people fell in line over the charge and the company is looking for a way to force you to do so.

I don't consider a buffet a restaurant, In my experience, NCL has always frowned on cruisers taking food (from restaurants). On our last cruise, the waiter indicated he could get in trouble if I was seen by the maître de or allowed by waiter to take-out. Nice waiter had our desserts delivered to the cabin within minutes.

It is just something more for a "certain group" to whine about before knowing all the facts.

My father would have done it- he was raised during the Depression and hated to see any food go to waste. If he didn't finish something he would have definitely taken it back to finish later.

Could the tupperware carriers meandering about cause this to happen?

Find it incredible that you would want to take left overs away with you. Isn't there enough food onboard ?

Great. Just great. Now people will be smuggling the food back to the cabin without napkins or plates leaving cribs all over the place attracting more bugs. Why can't NCL just think things through a little?

I don't think they were speaking of buffet food. Probably specialty or MDR.

My father would have done it- he was raised during the Depression and hated to see any food go to waste. If he didn't finish something he would have definitely taken it back to finish later.

My wife was told this afternoon on the Epic by one of the managers in O'Sheehan's that she couldn't take food back to the room. She had asked the waiter for a fruit plate with just watermelon, and he delivered a pile of watermelon slices.

So, the extra got thrown away. This is a waste of food. There is a fridge in the room - waiters have been wrapping cheesecake at Cagney's for years, because she's not ready for dessert immediately after finishing a steak.

I suppose drunks sloshing drinks around from bar to bar to room is fine, but snacks for later are evil.

The minibar "fridge" that is in most cabins is not a food safe fridge that cools to a temperate to safely store food. Anyone here that has tried to use it for milk can attest to that. It is intended for cooling beverages only. Using it to store perishable leftovers to eat later is just asking to get sick. Storing a desert there for a couple of hours is one thing but actual "leftovers" is a very bad idea.

My MIL does this also, cept she won't eat the food once we bring it home; "its for your lunch".

She tried taking back the sail-away bbq chicken when I finally had to say "NO! Not on a cruise ship!" :rolleyes:

I don't get -If one has the UDP, can't you just go back numerous times that evening/week going to different specialty restaurants especially for dessert? The reason why I asking, is that majority of doomsayers on CC have the UDP anyway, so there's technically no reason to have leftovers because you can always go back and get it. I can see the people who don't have the UDP, wanting to take leftovers but then again, one shouldn't be a light eater going to specialty restaurant anyway...

Same thing with O'Sheenan's - its open 24 hours plus the general menu doesn't change just like the specialty restaurants. I really don't see the big deal here....[emoji52]

I had to box up my dinner (ordered but not yet served) twice on our recent cruise due to the kids' club calling about a sleepy toddler. In one case, they handed me the plate with a dome over it. In the other, room service actually brought the meal to the cabin. It was appreciated.

Yummy....this will be me on Friday! My wife won't eat anything right after dinner. She's not a sweet eater, with the exception of chocolate mousse and Oreos.

I like the idea of a having a piece of cheesecake sitting in the room fridge so I can have a late night snack.

I will continue to head to the buffet in the morning, get breakfast for myself and my wife, and bring it back to our cabin. If true, it's a stupid rule and I will refuse to follow it. The crew will have to forcefully knock my eggs and bacon on the floor to stop me :D:D:D

Can you bring a plate of cheese back from the buffet, that's all I want is my plate of cheese!!

I often sail alone, and only eat when I'm hungry, and if I'm having fun, it might be late at night before I realize I didn't have dinner. Sometimes it's midnight or two AM and I just want to grab some wings and go back to my cabin or suite to eat them. I don't want to be sitting in O'Sheehan's for half an hour by myself with people watching me eat alone. I'd rather grab, them, go up to the balcony and enjoy them in peace.

Unfortunately, that's not okay anymore. Ordering from room service will take longer than swinging by and grabbing them myself, not to mention the $ on top of it.

I'm sure that's going to play havoc with seating in the specialty restaurants if people show up at all hours wanting to be seated just to have dessert. Besides, why should I need to put my evening on hold to go back to a restaurant for dessert when I can just take it to my room to enjoy as a late night snack. Since I paid for the meal I should have some leeway to enjoy it where I want. Seems pretty cheesy to implement a mandatory 18% gratuity and then begin to reduce the service given.
