Pit Bull to be Godfather of Escape??

You know what they say - Age is just a number. Can be old at 35 by not knowing who Pitbull nor liking current dance club music and young at 60 for knowing who he is and dancing to him at 2am at the club, lol. [emoji23]

As I've said many times to my wife, I knew I was getting old when I realized that the time I now go to bed, is the time that I used to start thinking about getting ready to go out for the evening.

Well, that and having to get up in the middle of the night, every night, to use the washroom.

And, I guess, when it hit me that my head was now having a race to see which would happen first - going completely grey or losing my hair.

And don't get me started on when we go out to restaurants or stores in the mall, and I want to (but never do) speak to management to ask them to turn the music down.

And when I started referring to teenagers as a whole, as "big bunches of hoodlums".

Oh, and let's not forget the conversation I had last month, where - without thinking about it - I referred to "The Google", as in "We should look that up on the Google."

And yes, I'm 42, just about to turn 43, with an 11 year old daughter (heaven help her...)

My thoughts.

He is a Miami native.

He promotes a belief in hard work and a positive attitude.

Just saw the guy perform in Las Vegas. He at one point, during his performance, asked the crowd to perform a roll call....He asked ethnicity... Latinos, Cuban, Puerto Rico, etc. Then finished to point to everyone that most importantly we are first and foremost Americans!

He has established Charter Schools for disadvantaged kids in both Miami and Las Vegas call "Slam" Schools.

And he puts on a real show.

I think it's a great choice.

She's one of like...6 Godmothers to the Oasis of the Seas.

 

As far as I can tell, Pitbull is the first godfather for a major cruise ship.

NCL's Pride of Hawaii was named by U.S. Senator Dan Inouye in 2006.

There have also been several groups of "godparents" that included men (Norwegian Sky, Adventure of the Seas, etc.)

I find it interesting and entertaining. I liked reading other's thoughts about Pitbull and don't see it as an argumentative thread; just a discussion with different views.

I like many things about him, especially his music and I hope it's featured throughout the ship. I think he's a great choice. He seems to appeal to more than one generation and that's a good thing!

What I find boring are the unending threads such as DSC and tipping related that go on ad nauseam for days.

Don't know what your definition of "original" is; not only has he written or co-written many of the songs he sings in, he has written or co-written for others as well.

It's not the obscenity I have a problem with--it is the fact that he just samples other peoples music, adds a stupid rap in the middle and passes it off as original. None of "his songs" are original.

That could be debated. IMHO he is more of a producer/collaborator than artist. Had a very interesting conversation with a songwriter I met on the Breakaway in July while waiting for the next set at Fat Cats.

I think it's fine that people like to dance to his catchy beat, but it is not original.

As a musician, I'm hard pressed to name any popular music in the last 100 years that is truly original. There are only so many variations in melody, harmony, tempo & rhythm that are available & sound right to our ear. There are dozens of popular tunes based on folk or classical melodies, or even straight up covers with different lyrics.

Lover's Concerto & Groovy kind of love are both based on classical melodies and Morning has Broken, Scarborough Fair & the Parting Glass (yes Ed Sheeran I'm looking at you) are all very old folk/religious melodies. Jazz is nothing more than sampling & improvisation. I guess electronic sampling is easier, but the source is more identifiable.

The best music combines elements in unusual ways. Who knows if Pitbull will be relevant musically in 10 years. I do see a growth in his music that leads me to believe he may have a very long lasting career. Who would ever think that Lady GaGa would be singing with Tony Bennet. I think NCL needs to build a San Francisco themed ship & have Tony & GaGa be godfather & godmother;)

I love Vanilla Ice (Rob). I watched his show all the way home today (about buying and fixing up houses for profit) on our SW flight wifi. :p

As for Pitbull, at first I was like "well, that's weird", then after reading all the comments and what he does for the community and everything, I now understand. They do play a lot of his music and I like his music...so, I'm good with this choice. :D

Well, as far as rap goes, the first acknowleged rap song, "Rappers Delight" by the Sugar Hill Gang came out in 1979, so that style of music is 36 yrs old (gah!)

And Pitbull, aka Mr Worldwide, is a snazzy dresser :)

I have the remixes downloaded from iTunes. I was surprised to find them there, but someone had mentioned that "Let's Go" was available for download. Playing them and thinking about my next cruise is cheaper than therapy.

I agree. I love Pitbull. He does a lot for his community, seems to be a stand up very classy guy and appeals to the younger generation and to some of us old ladies as well.

Just another angry, snarky, culturally ignorant thread criticizing Norwegian, this time for making a smart, savvy choice for a godfather to Escape. If you don't know who Pitbull is, or like his music, or if you don't like Miami (i.e. the cruise capital of the world and Norwegian's world headquarters), then perhaps you aren't in a place to understand Norwegian's choice. However, Pitbull is relevant to many, many people, and his music is very popular.

 

Los Angeles Times: "The musician, performer, business entrepreneur, fashion icon and actor has sold more than 5 million albums and 60 million singles worldwide."

 

Miami.com: "Tick-tock. Pitbull is back on countdown duty. He’ll play Dick Clark-Miami style again this year for Fox-TV’s live countdown to 2016. Pitbull’s New Year’s Eve Revolution is reportedly set for for Bayfront Park. ... Mr. Worldwide and Fox have another deal going: The network wants him to executive produce a TV show."

 

I applaud Norwegian's choice. It makes a lot of sense for a lot of reasons. Criticize and make snarky comments all you like, but if you want folks at Norwegian to consider your thoughts, it's likely helpful if you first consider Norwegian's perspective.

*NCL should be marketing to the Millennials as all companies today should, that's the future, nothing wrong with that.

*PittBull is Miami based, along with the company

*Music has a Caribbean flare

*Huge businessman/philanthropist.

* He would be dressed beautifully on Formal night

*NCL is a business and wants/should sell drinks, dancing etc. The duct tape carrying, string quartet crowd don't pay the bills. The bar/casino pays the bills, which would be more inclined to be a Pitt Bull fan.

*If Pit Bulls music, and he has be around for a decade, is too new for you, may I suggest Holland America the ship to the left as you board

*This cruising stuff is not a religion, its a marketing promo, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Lol, that's actually a good comparsion regarding the difference between the people that like NCL and those that are upset at new changes. It's not the actual age, it's the mentality.[emoji14]

He is very popular. And 5 million albums is a ton today. Since iTunes came on the scene no one buys albums anymore.
