My husband and I are booked on the celebrity eclipse Alaskan cruise in August. We will be doing a balcony and it looks like the starboard side is best for views. For an additional price, we can pick our cabin and have it guaranteed on that side. BUT I am not sure if it is worth it bc it might be beautiful on port side as well.

Has anyone done this route and can help me with this? Should I save the money and risk them putting us in any balcony cabin? If you stayed on the port side, do you get the same views?

Thank you so much for your help!

Generally speaking if the port side sees something outbound, starboard will see it inbound. When cruising in Glacier Bay, etc you will see both sides. It really doesn't matter which side you are on.

When I tried to book dinner reservations in the main dining room on the app, only 9pm was available, which is way too late for us. Will I be able to book an earlier dinner reservation once I board the ship?

The lack of choice pre-cruise is a normal occurance. Once on board go and make reservations for the time you want, or just go at your desired time.

I had no problem , the only time it was slow on cruise critic when I was check out Jim’s thread with his thousand of pictures 🤣

I could stream short videos on FB and YouTube , no problem sending pictures

On our Panama crossing I could log in to CC with basic, but couldn't see images nor could I reply. No issue when I used my streaming minutes.

We're looking for a mid-ship cabin on the Silhouette.  We've never been in a cabin with an upper bed.  It's just going to be the two of us in the cabin and my husband is 6'2".  Is this something that he could hit his head on?

The upper bed is completely retracted into the ceiling. You will only know it's there but the shape of the panel.

What is the difference between an “infinite veranda guarantee”. and a “veranda guarantee” ? In this case the “veranda guarantee” is 100.00 cheaper than the infinite veranda guarantee.  Ship is Beyond. I understand what a guarantee is but can’t figure out what would be considered a lower value veranda from an infinite veranda.

Probably the porthole verandas far forward and aft.

This is a description of the excursion:

    Overview

Discover the workings of one of the most incredible engineering marvels in the world: the Panama Canal. Your tour begins at Miraflores Locks, where you'll see how the canal works up-close. You'll learn about this incredible engineering marvel, before your journey to the Expansion Observatory Platform where you'll learn about the canal expansion that includes two lock complexes, one on the Pacific, one on the Atlantic; excavation of new channels; and the deepening and widening of existing channels.

    Highlights

    • Learn about the workings of one of the most incredible engineering marvels in the world: the Panama Canal.
    • Visit the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal, learn about the history behind it's construction.
    • Step onto the Expansion Observatory Platform to see the process that will allow larger ships to travel the canal.

Has anyone done this excursion?  It is a 5 1/2 hour tour. I can't understand why it is so long!  Is there a lot of traveling to and from

the sites?  Is it worth getting off the ship? I feel I could research  Youtube or Netflix and find the same information. I am doing a partial

transit through the canal. If I get off the ship for this excursion,  I believe I will miss going through the canal. Please inform me if I am incorrect and advise me. Thank you so much.

I did this 3 weeks ago. One of the reasons for the length is the drive from Colon to Miraflores, to see the old locks in operation, and back. Then you add in the obligatory "shopping" stop at a small strip mall where you get a sticker to wear so that the vendors can see who is guiding money their way. The stop at the new visitor center is about an hour, and then there is about an hour at the observation building in MiraFlores. Once the new new observation area at the historic locks in Gatun is complete the excursion should be about 2 hours less. It was interesting enough, but the long drive with no guarantee of seeing a ship in the locks (which we didn't) didn't make it worthwhile for me.

So it seems with an onboard booking with a $100 pp deposit a change to ship/sail date is the same as cancelling.

Other than the deposit on the new sail date will still only be $100 with a change, and you still keep your extra OBC for booking on board.

I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the $7 pp/day flash sale upgrade from basic to premium wifi on our September trans-Pacific cruise on the Millie.  I think it would be worth it if the performance would really allow streaming as advertised, especially on such a sea day heavy cruise.

I was on the Summit in late 2021, definitely pre-Starlink days, with Elite premium wifi and the performance was terrible even with 50% ship capacity.   I'm certain that even basic Starlink would perform better than that.

Searching through these forums, it looks like Starlink was scheduled to be installed on the Millie last March.  Could anyone tell me their recent experience with premium wifi on this ship?

Last month the basic was so-so, and the streaming wasn't too bad with the exception of one day due to ship location. It wasn't super fast, but certainly usable for my needs. what "fast" is, is very subjective.

Can you buy internet for one device and then use a hot spot on that device for other devices

The problem with that is the way they throttle available bandwidth you will be sharing the bandwidth allocated to your connection amongst all the devices on your hotspot. Might work with stream, but basic is just passable with one device.

I interpreted this as meaning the deposit amount won’t be refunded, but can be transferred to a different cruise minus a $100 pp change fee.  Am I reading that correctly ...

You are correct in your interpretation. As a note, to lose only $100 you must keep your original booking number, so do not cancel and then book a new cruise. You must transfer the booking to the new ship/sail date to keep the booking number.

I confess I am getting confused about cancellation changes. As of today, what is the cancellation policy? Thanks for clarifying. FCC??  No FCC?  If there is, is there a time constraint?

If you cancel on a cruise booked today, you will lose the whole deposit with the NRD. That's as simple as it gets. Previously booked cruises will be grandfathered in according to the terms on your guest invoice.

We will be on the Ascent for the pre-Maiden voyage. I’m not sure who the captain will be. What is the appeal of having both?  Genuinely curious as I have never been one to follow a particular captain or crew.

Sorry, just one of my pet peeves. A ship can only have one maiden voyage, the first one. Hard to have a one before the first one. The pre-maiden voyage is really the maiden voyage.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.😎

  14. I think the way it is laid out on the M class, diners come up, see nothing and head back to the MDR. The buffet says we have fewer diners so we have to cut back. Diners finally find the very scaled down offerings and don't come back, furthering the downward spiral. "Build it and they will come". The only constant is the 10 daily Indian selections.

There was no difference in the dinner buffet when the ship had 2200 passengers, and the next leg with 1200.

When they had the stirfry station open, it was best to have a snack before heading there as the turn-around time was quite long. 20+ people in line, 1 stirfry chef with 2 pans.

  15. I just spent three weeks on the Millennium. The variety varied greatly day to day. On embarkation day and day two the variety was far superior to the balance of the cruise. Food quality was definitely far below pre-pandemic levels. If you like Indian/Asian food you will be in your glory. The selection at the grill to order was limited to one protein daily. Soups seemed to have no substance, no matter which was available.

Unfortunately on the M class the grill area is at the back, so when you arrive at the Oceanview it looks like an abandoned food court.

If it was your business and less than 1/2 your rooms held 3 or 4 paying passenger would you encourage parties of 2 to book room for 3 or 4?

I understand, but it irks me that on the S class I can't get a bed by bath cabin. Realistically how many of those cabins are actually occupied by more than two?

We’ve booked with Celebrity for May of next year and I’m reading the details of the packages we have and was surprised to see this on the premium drink package:

    • “Packages may not be shared, and do not include beverages sold in gift shops, mini-bar or room service.“

so if we order room service the food is included but the drinks are extra?  So much for some OJ with breakfast.    Do they really charge you for room service drinks?   Also, would it be in poor taste to ask the butler to clear out the mini bar?

OJ is included with breakfast, and it isn't an issue to have the fridge cleared out. The room service charge is for alcoholic beverages.
