The Fleet Report and Daily for Wednesday August 10th, 2022
rafinmd replied to richwmn's topic in Holland America Line
Probably the best way would be to start with the thread I did at the time. I go over the logistics a bit in the first post, and somewhere along the way post photos from the Kennicott and talk a bit about life on board. I'm not sure about the protocols right now but do know that for a time during Covid passengers were not allowed to get off at the midway ports. Probably the best place for any followup questions is here on the Daily/Fleet report.- 104 replies

My understanding is that it is not even the full railroad dock. I think it is just one of 2 berths there and a berth HAL rarely if ever uses. Roy- 104 replies

Thank you for the Hump Day report, Rich. Not really a fan of S'mores. Lions are Majestic but I really like Lazy Day. Great wisdom from Tolstoy. Buenos Aires is a great port that I have enjoyed from both Crystal ships, Zaandam, and Prinsendam, usually as an embarkation port but as a port of call on Prinsendam. It is also the gateway to Iguazu Falls. Since I don't eat seafood I'll pass on the bass. Not sure what the pocket part is all about. My alternative is Fresh Fruit Medley, Grandma's Chicken Noodle Soup, and Spaghetti Puttanesca as served on MS Prinsendam August 10, 2011. Today’s care list: Koningsdam crew member overboard 8/9 Sam severely declining Crabbi Patti’s father and now son with Covid The locks at Ijmuiden(Rotterdam diverted to at least 8/14) From the rotation: Atrex6 Father severely declining Status of St. Louis Sal (7/1), msmayor (5/20) and JAM37 (7/7) Strength and healing for Kazu Painful falls for Marshhawk, and Lindaler Celebrations and Shoutouts: First Daily Post for Scotslady Shadow/Little in Kazu’s care and making progress Volendam caring for refugees StLouisCruisers on road trip Live4cruises in NC Hills to 8/11 Aliaschief touring Hebrides to 8/14 5 days for Aliaschief (Rotterdam 8/14 to 8/28) Cat in My Lap (Zaandam to 8/13), Mister67 (Equinox to 8/13), AMRDS (Nieuw Amsterdam to 8/14) , Mtn2sea and kplady (Nieuw Statendam to 8/27), and Gail&Marty (Rotterdam to 10/15) at sea Staff Captain Sabine - Our first female Staff Captain and HAL’s likely first female Captain(I know this is a repeat but she’s worth it) Roy- 104 replies

Thank you for the Tuesday Report, Rich. I love all 3 of the days. The Day for Indigenous People is especially appropriate. Love the quote from the Alchemist. Never been to Angola. Not sure about the meal. My alternative is Orange and Avacado Carousel, Chilled Mango Gazpacho, and Blackened Strip Loin Steak as served on MS Prinsendam August 9, 2011. Thank you for the Monday Daily. I'll pass on the days although Cat day will be very popular here. The quote is I think sad but true. I've been to Semarang just once in 2014 on the Crystal Symphony. The meal sounds nice. My alternative is Citrus Compote with Honey and Raisins, Chilled Strawberry Bisque, and Parmesan Coated Veal Loin as served on MS Prinsendam August 8, 2011. Today’s care list: Tbay, her DH and DGS with Covid Cruzn single pulmonary Fibrosis diagnosis Crabbi Patti’s father and now son with Covid Crusin Terri at Mayo Cllinic Slow recovery for smitty and Tana The locks at Ijmuiden(Rotterdam diverted to at least 8/14) Celebrations and Shoutouts: Shadow/Little in Kazu’s care and making progress Welcome home Crabbi Patti Volendam caring for refugees StLouisCruisers on road trip Live4cruises in NC Hills to 8/11 Aliaschief touring Hebrides to 8/14 6 days for Aliaschief (Rotterdam 8/14 to 8/28) Cat in My Lap (Zaandam to 8/13), Mister67 (Equinox to 8/13), AMRDS (Nieuw Amsterdam to 8/14) , Mtn2sea and kplady (Nieuw Statendam to 8/27), and Gail&Marty (Rotterdam to 10/15) at sea Staff Captain Sabine - Our first female Staff Captain and HAL’s likely first female Captain(I know this is a repeat but she’s worth it) Roy- 107 replies

The Fleet Report and Daily for Sunday August 7th, 2022
rafinmd replied to richwmn's topic in Holland America Line
National Lighthouse Day and @ger_77's post started me thinking. I grew up just north of Syracuse New York, and my usual swimming place was on Oneida Lake. The original Erie Canal was pretty much a simple ditch but it was updated about 1918 to carry strings of motorized barges, and at that time started making use of available waterways including a transit of Oneida Lake: I started thinking "maybe there were lighthouses and it turns out there were 3. There was one at Frenchman's Island near the west end of the lake, one at Brewerton, and a third at Sylvan Beach at the East end. That one is reported to still be operational although it would not be really used in navigation as it done electronically. I did not find photos except for one I'll link from Marine Traffic: https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/photos/of/lights/lightname:Verona Beach/lights Not much ink on the link but from the link search for Sylvan Beach I always saw strings of barges crossing through the lake when I still lived there but they no longer do. I have Crossed the lake several times on cruises with Blount Small Ship adventures. The lights would have been vital to navigation in early years for finding the lake exits. The primary route of the canal now goes to Lake Ontario in Oswego although there is still a branch that crosses to Buffalo. Roy- 89 replies

One thing to consider about Arrive Can. The rules change from time to time so if you don't update the app RIGHT before you travel you could be working with obselete requirements. The web version of ArriveCan is ALWAYS up to date. Roy

Thank you for the Sunday Daily and Fleet Report, Rich. 3 great days to celebrate. Forgiveness does not always call for forgetting what happened and going back to normal. Lighthouses are becoming endangered due to both electronic aids and erosion. I love the Conrad quote. @RedneckBob tell DW she might not be any happier with any other man. I've been to Delgada 3 times, Crystal Serenity in 2008, Queen Victoria in 2016, and Nieuw Statendam in 2019. Since I don't eat seafood, I'll pass on the meal. My alternative is Assorted Garden Greens, Marinated Pineapple Spears and Tagallatelle Verdi Alla Conti as served on MS Prinsendam August 7, 2015.
