  1. Does it really matter whether you choose port or starboard? In the past we've been more interested in being on a low deck and midships, but should we also be thinking of which side? I'm currently looking at a number of cruises and would value your opinion. The Norwegian Fjords which also visits Denmark Rome to Trieste or variations on a theme. Eastern transatlantic
  2. At his usual 12 o'clock talk the Captain announced that there was the possibility of the Lights appearing that evening but he didn't know what time this would be. He then said that if we were interested in seeing them (!) to leave the tv switched on the bridge cam channel which normally has no sound. If the lights were likely to be seen he would make an announcement through this channel. We went to bed normal time but left the necessary clothing ready for the call which came, as I said, at around 2.30 am. I remember as I opened the cabin door wondering how many others would heed the call - we were nearly trampled by a corridor full of people all in the haste to get on deck!!! 🤣
  3. Which ship? We did this cruise (out of Southampton) on the Queen Victoria last October and it was brilliant. With only a 1 in 10 chance of seeing the Lights (according to the expert on board) we were fortunate to see them twice from the deck of the ship. The captain turned off the deck lights to help see them more clearly. Be prepared to be woken up at a godly hour if the captain thinks there is a chance they may appear - we got the call at 2.30 am !!!
  4. Free ice cream is available all day. Speciality coffees are free with your meals in the main dining room Small buffet area open late at night (if you're still hungry!)
  5. Thanks for the advice. We have cancelled the upgrade. Whilst I have to admit to not checking occupancy in an obstructed ocean view cabin I am also cross at the misinformation given to us via the telephone. I told her that there were 3 of us on the booking and she confirmed that she could see 3 names, but she assured us that we would receive an email which would clearly state an occupancy level of 3. It did not.
  6. Currently we are booked into a deluxe inside cabin on the Queen Victoria. There will be 3 of us, the 3rd being our adult daughter who prefers the sofa bed as she feels she can no longer comfortably manage the bunk bed. The upgrade email has arrived and we were tempted by the obstructed outside view cabin, but when we tried to bid on line it only showed double occupancy. DH rang Cunard and the lady confirmed our booking for 3 and that although the bid showed only for 2 people we would be okay. We further enquired about the 3rd bed and again she said it would be a sofa bed. Based on this conversation we went ahead and put in a (minimum) bid. The confirmation email has just arrived and it still shows only double occupancy. I then looked at deck plans (yes, I should have done it first) and it looks to me as if there are no cabins big enough for 3? Should we be worried?
  7. Both ways have their own merits, but for me eastbound wins. Yes, the days are shorter but if you've gone slightly 'mad' with shopping in New York you have no luggage restrictions unlike on a flight!!!!!
  8. For the first bottle, yes: for the second one, no.
  9. Most regular Cunarders know that there is a disparity in offers between the UK and the USA, but do we know why?
  10. We had a half bottle on our recent cruise on the QM2 and then to our delight/dismay (delete as applicable) halfway through the trip another half bottle appeared!!!
  11. Wow, sorry to hear this. Hope you get better soon. Will you be rearranging these cruises or are they 'lost'?
  12. This may help Shipping forecast and gale warnings - Met Office
  13. Thinking of a cruise to Iceland next summer and both these ships offer the itinerary. Which would you choose and why. We are 'young' senior citizens who will be accompanied by our adult daughter. Dates are either June or July.
  14. Sorry Hattie, I obviously missed this!!
  15. I noted on another thread here that the GL offers dinner on the Queen Elizabeth. What food is served and what are the chances of this being rolled out to at least her sister ship the Queen Victoria?
  16. Funnily enough we've toured Australia four times, twice as a land tour and twice on a cruise, the latter ending in China. It is, indeed, a long way and even breaking up the flights with a couple of nights stopover - we've done Hong-Kong and Singapore. - it is still two 13 hours flights. However, it's over 10 years since we did such a trek and as much as we'd go back in a heartbeat, the thought of the flights is a real turn-off. Seems odd to say that when I'd like to do a SA cruise but I suppose it's somewhere different and one I would be prepared to suffer for the cause !! But as I've said before, I realise that SA is never going to happen so that's an end to it.
  17. Thanks for the responses. The Queen Victoria cruise was just 'a mention' as someone had pointed out the long flights to wherever we would be departing from. As I'm looking at 2025 I have some time yet to try and find out if there is anything real or imagined that puts him off a cruise to SA. I suspect that it's a non-starter and as I am not prepared to travel solo, I'll just chalk it off as the one that got away. Plenty of other places to cruise to!!
