  1. The dock closest to the camera is the AS (American Steamship) dock, behind that is the CT dock (Cruise Terminal), next and indented somewhat is the Franklin Dock (end of Franklin Street), and way out there is the AJ dock. Princess is most likely found at the Franklin Dock, Norwegian huge ships trade off morning and afternoon at the AJ dock. HAL will most likely have the CT or AS dock which are centrally located for cruisers wanting to walk around town. Too many ships and somebody will have to tender. The smaller ships have docking more fitted to their size in the same docking area. There is another webcam called theSnowcloud which is in Hoonah that gives a great aerial view of ships docked in Juneau.
  2. yes. In the past there has been a sign indicating Club Orange dining check in. You will have priority.
  3. Cloudy skies in Juneau. Majestic Princess is moving into the FKL dock. Noordam is next up the Channel in a few hours
  4. Crew smiles will return when the masks go away! The Mariner’s luncheons were a marketing opportunity for HAL as far as I’m concerned. We loved meeting mariners who had traveled to other regions. They often motivated me to sign up for another cruise! The time wasn’t convenient, the food choices were limited, but the conversations with the other mariners were priceless!
  5. I’ve only used the self service laundry machines on Seabourn and Azamara. The laundry room was very active on sea days as was the hallway with people coming and going waiting for a machine or dry laundry. I much prefer sending out a bag of dirty laundry for someone else to wash and fold and return to me. I didn’t enjoy doing laundry on a ship, I was on vacation! Some delicate items I can hand wash and dry on the clothesline above the tub or shower.
  6. I was surprised to see Norwegian ship at anchor. It will be a busy day in Juneau. I hope the weather improves.
  7. I hope this post dies soon. Do not respond, please!
  8. If the dining room was closed for breakfast, I hope CO was allowed to eat breakfast in the Pinnacle. After all, CO benefits include a sit down, served breakfast on ships that have a CO dining room. If you pay extra for CO you are entitled to the perks of CO or equivalent.
  9. A few years ago I had the same problem. I found out that he had been reassigned and was no longer a PCC.. Nobody took over that extension but it was still accepting messages (to a non-monitored line). Call the Mariner Society to find out if your PCC is still a PCC.
  10. We have rented a car in Skagway and driven over to Dyea and up the road to the Canadian border. So much depends on the weather and cars have to be rented well in advance. Haines is a quaint little town and has an interesting Hammer Museum. There’s not a lot to see there. The last time we were there we rented a car and drove up the road toward Haines Junction but turned around midway. In Haines it was easy to rent a car once we arrived. There is another post recently on this board that indicated that the ferry may not go from Skagway to Haines every day. It may be a financial issue. You may be able to find a private tour operator to show you around in Skagway or Haines.
  11. We considered doing it on our own a few years ago but the schedules were pretty inconsistent. I was concerned about our return trip back to Skagway. If you are on a ship tour you don’t have to worry. We saw Haines when our ship stopped there as part of an itinerary. I’m surprised that Princess isn’t offering the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve rafting but maybe it’s too early in the season. The American Bald Eagle Foundation is in town. Not sure about the Heritage Center (it may be out the road aways). There is a lot to do in Skagway but maybe you’ve seen it all on previous visits.
  12. @Copper10-8 When the Koningsdam pulled up to tthe dock in Juneau the dock master (Drew, I think) indicated where the bosun could “make your mark’ for the season. Do they actually make a mark on the dock or on a chart or ??? Beautiful May day in Juneau at my favorite AS dock.
  13. You need a passport if you are going through Canada. You don’t say how old the kids are but if the passport just expired you need to get it renewed. Kid’s passports are only for 5 years, I think. If sailing from Seattle the rules can be confusing but from Canada you need a passport.
  14. I’ve traveled a lot with HAL in Alaska but this is the first year for HAL in Whittier. If you are wondering when the cruise train leaves you may get an answer on the Princess board or wait for someone to report on this years HAL transfer experience. We’re not going until August and have a 26 glacier tour and then I think we are on a bus to Anchorage,
  15. Have you considered the HAL transfer cruisetrain from Whittier to Anchorage? Look at excursions from Whittier. HAL will want to get you from the ship to the train directly and there will be no hanging around time. What time does the ship disembark? What 8:45 a.m./p.m. bus do you have tickets for? HAL is so well organized with their transfers and accommodations in Alaska that it much easier to book through HAL unless you have done this before. HAL will have the ship cruise train schedule and the Alaska Railroad will have their separate schedule not geared to the cruise traffic.
  16. @defnjeb We flew Vancouver to Whitehorse on Air Canada snd Dawson City to Fairbanks. As I recall the dirt runway in Dawson City was the issue plus it was a charter for just our combined group. You will find that you don’t need a lot. Wear your heaviest shoes and jeans. You will be layering your clothes and nobody will notice if you wear the same thing as long as they look reasonably clean and smell ok. Mix and match. Don’t forget the rain gear (we travel with rain pants and jacket). The rain pants are also an extra warmth layer. I think there are laundry facilities in Dawson City but who wants to do laundry while on vacation. Have your laundry done on the ship before or after your tour. We had our cruise clothes in one suitcase and expected that bag to travel separately to the ship but we had it with us all the way since we had to usher it through customs at the Canadian/US border. Other than that your luggage will be handled by staff. There will be a line at the Skagway post office with people sending items home to lower their baggage weight and to avoid customs. Fortunately one couple shared their packing tape with us. If it fits it ships boxes are available. @eggemonYou might ask someone at HAL or have your TA contact HAL about sending baggage ahead to Anchorage if you know which hotel you will be in. HAL and Princess have a huge land travel business in Alaska.

    Haines Ferry?

Probably not worth it unless there is something yiu want to do in Haines. You will probably see eagles but not whales. Skagway has National Park gold rush exhibits and a nice museum. If you like to hike pick up a map of hikes in Skagway. Go out to the Gold Rush Cemetery. There is plenty to do.
  18. @DianeLeslie. The meal plan will restrict your choice of meals to the HAL and Princess properties. The TWT snack box has a variety of snacks and a drink. I’ve never felt like I needed to buy a sandwich. Breakfast is offered as a buffet, either full breakfast or continental (including oatmeal and fruit). Breakfast buffet is a hearty one and you can get in and out quickly as opposed to a served meal. I always have a snack bar with me. There is coffee in the room. The HAL bus will have a restroom in the back but most people wait for the comfort stop (which may be an outhouse). The Denali bus will not have toileting facilities but will stop at regular intervals (probably outhouse type facilities). They provide hand gel. The Denali train has a dining car with servers and excellent plated meals. You will be given a menu with a choice of meals like salmon, chicken, etc and desserts if you want. You will be invited to come to the dining car and you can go then or tell them you would prefer to go later.
