  1. I knew even before going on my first cruise that I’d love it.So last October I booked a cruise on the Anthem of the Seas. Two months later, my family and I had a great time on our ten day holiday trip.

I’ve been anticipating my November 18th, 2017 return to Anthem for months, and three things make it special. I’ve booked a super studio with an extra large balcony, I’ve completed my doctorate, and this time I’m traveling solo. So with a week to embarkation, you can imagine all the prep I had to do.

Friday morning i woke up with pain in my left shoulder, my stomach and my back. When I inhaled, the pain intensified. The pain tapered off during the day. Saturday night I was packing when pain slammed into my lower back. I knew it was muscle spasms so I took pain killers, but within an hour, intense crushing pain had spread to my stomach and wrapped like a vise around my upper abdomen. At 2am, shaking and sweating, I hobbled into the ER. I wasn’t having a heart attack, so for hours I was given medication to numb my stomach, followed by three other painkillers, and a sonogram. Finally, I was admitted to a room, pumped full of narcotics and anti nausea, and sent off for hours of testing. They finally confirmed a diagnosis of gallstones, and my gall bladder has to come out.

My surgery isn’t until Tuesday evening. I need to drive seven hours to New Jersey, alone, on Friday. I can’t lift anything for six weeks or so. To my surprise, the doctor encouraged me to go on the trip....he said he would go if he was in that situation.

So....I have trip insurance and could get my money back, but so many stars had to align for this trip to happen, I’m hesitant to cancel. But with me traveling alone there’s so many things to consider. My carry on bag, swimming, my shore excursions, the long drive...

Has anyone had something like this happen to them? Any advice? What would you do?

I have had my gallbladder out. It was outpatient surgery and after two days of rest I was back to normal. I would take the cruise and use it as a relaxation cruise.

  2. Everyone has stated that upgrades are available.

But if the higher class cabin is CHEAPER than you paid, you can get the cabin, but NO refund or OBC.

That's not true. A fellow cruiser also called for the upgrade. She was willing to pay up to $700 more for the upgrade and she was denied. The same day I called. They currently have about 10 Jr. suites available but she was denied an upgrade.

  3. Yeah...that’s a 7-nighter...returns on December 23...those cruises that end in the week before Christmas or leave during the week after New Years are often significantly lower priced since school is either not yet out for Winter Break or the cruise will last until after school is back in session. Hence, the demand goes way down...

    Yep and fewer kids.

  4. 2 normal patio chairs and a small table. No loungers, unless you have some sort of "extended" balcony configuration. Even tho a JS has a wider balcony than a standard cabin, it's no deeper, so a lounger simply won't fit.

I am mostly on the hump, some of the balcony is not but the majority is. If there is a deck chair, I will be ecstatic!!!!!

  5. Having 4 kids (16, 15, 12 and 8) this subject is near and dear to my heart. Short answer is YES I would depending on the child. Long answer is that it gets VERY difficult for most kinds once they hit HS to be able to do this and keep up. I would encourage you to do it now before you get to that point because you very well may have a child (like I do) that absolutely does not want to fall behind.

As an aside, I live in an area in PA that is loaded with prestigious private schools with tuition around 30-40K per year. My girls skate with many of these girls so we get a window into their educations, policies etc. They ENCOURAGE you to take your child out of school for family vacations/experiences. They value the teaching moments that almost always present themselves. They do not have the 10 day absence rule that requires you to provide a doctors note if you go above that number of days.

Last year my 8 year old had pneumonia and was out for 5 days--for just ONE illness. Of course he got the stomach bug 3 times...you see where we are going here. So I got the lovely letter from the state and I called the school. The principal was very nice and said to disregard the letter. The only reason they enforce the policy is because of MONEY. Apparently the schools get money based on number of kids in school and number of days? I don't know...my head exploded at that point. Ridiculous.

So I went off on a tangent :) Enjoy your vacation...while you still can lol

Andrew I teach in PA, near all of the private schools that you mention. Schools do not get money for student based on attendance. School attendance is the law and thus must be followed, that's why you received thise letters, very odd that you got one from the state. Private schools are subject to the same laws as public schools. Private schools cater to those who pay their expensive tuition which includes taking your kids out of school whenever you want.

  6. As an elementary school teacher let me first say that elementary is just as important as middle and high school. Taking your kids out of school makes more work for the teacher. In some districts, not mine, the teacher will have give give all of the missing work (extra work), the teacher will then have to grade all of the work (extra work) and then the teacher might have to remediate the kids on what they are struggle with (extra work that might not have needed to be done if they didn't miss the week). Already over worked teachers having to do more work. Your decision to pull your kids out does not just impact you and your child.
