islandwoman Posted June 20, 2018 #1 Share Posted June 20, 2018 My upcoming cruise will be visiting Tahiti, Moorea, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu. I would like to have some currency for tips and incidentals, but I don't want to acquire a lot of XPF, VUV, or CPF. Are US dollars, Euros, or Australian dollars accepted in any of those places? FlightMedic555 Posted June 21, 2018 #2 Share Posted June 21, 2018 In French Polynesia most will take USD without an issue. With the current exchange rate 1,000 XPF should convert to $10 USD. There is a fixed exchange rate between the Euro and the XPF but you would need to stop at a bank to get the exchange.

In Vanuatu and and the smaller islands of New Caledonia, Australian dollars will be accepted but usually not in Noumea NC except at the Cruise Ship Terminal in the middle of town. Credit cards are usually accepted in Noumea. Leigh
Floridiana Posted July 26, 2018 #4 Share Posted July 26, 2018 Same currency question: Can I use AUS $ in Vanuatu AND Fiji? Should I use Euro or US$ in New Caledonia? How about Samoa? We booked ship's tours and will probably not buy much extra although I have a hard time resisting local vendors. Just look at my living room decorations.

You will find that the only currency accepted in the capital of New Caledonia is the South Pacific Franc (XPF) except perhaps in the market at the cruise terminal in the centre of town which will usually accept XPF, $AU or $NZ. $US will not be accepted. Euros possibly. On the islands of New Caledonia $AU is usually accepted. Enjoy your cruise to these beautiful tropical paradises. Leigh
Floridiana Posted July 28, 2018 #6 Share Posted July 28, 2018 Thank you Leigh. Do you happen to know if Samoa takes any currency other than tala? (not American Samoa)
