Not meaning to be snarky but why would u want to ferry over to the mainland when there are so many things to do on Cozumel? And the island is totally unspoiled on the east side.

If you want to see the ruins at Tulum, Coba, etc. taking the ferry to PDC is about your only option.

Travel is now allowed again.

Security Alert - U. S. Embassy Mexico City, Mexico (March 16, 2018)

Location: Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Event: As a result of recent incidents in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico, Mexican municipal, state, and federal entities have put into place new security procedures in tourist areas.

Effective immediately, U.S. government personnel are permitted to travel to all parts of Playa del Carmen.

Effective immediately, U.S. government personnel are permitted to use ferry services between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.

As noted in our Mexico Travel Advisory for the state of Quintana Roo, U.S. citizens should exercise increased caution due to crime. According to Government of Mexico statistics, the state experienced an increase in homicide rates compared to the same period in 2016. While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted, criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by U.S. citizens. Shooting incidents injuring or killing bystanders have occurred.

Actions to Take:

· Be aware of your surroundings and exercise increased caution due to crime as noted in our Mexico Travel Advisory.

· Purchase travel insurance that specifically covers you in Mexico and includes medical evacuation insurance.

· Contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate if you need assistance.

From what I understand from the locals, they are instituting bag searches at the ferry station on Cozumel, before you get on the ferry. So expect to arrive 20+ minutes early. That is for traveling by ferry downtown on your own, not the cruise lines.

The cruise lines....? I would expect they are looking into something similar when they restart using the ferries, but nothing announced yet.

We've been to Cozumel SO many times, but never the east side. What can you tell me about that part of the island. Could be a nice change for us.

Here is a link to a map. Click on individual beaches for some insight as to what is available - a little dated but gives you general idea. Enjoy videos.

Be sure to arrange transport, not many waiting taxis on this side. Bar hop can be cost effective for party of two, otherwise we usually book a private driver through ToursPlaza. We have also had a private driver with just two people when we want to set our own itinerary. If you know where you want to go, and just need a driver - not necessarily help or a tour, you can take a taxi from dispatch for a set number of hours - agree before you leave.

Ask if you have any specific questions.

Did you pre-book with ToursPlaza? Or upon arrival (if so, they must have a kiosk or office there? TIA!

You need to pre-book with a private driver so they can get permission from the taxi union to meet you inside the port. That is why you have to go to an off-site location for many independent tours on Cozumel. If you want to take a tour in the day of arrival you would have to wait at taxi dispatch, as I said before.

Eduardo, the administrator for ToursPlaza, is very efficient and will answer any questions you have.
