Retiring cajun Posted January 29, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 29, 2016 We received an email @ possibility of CB being delayed into Houston, Sat. 30. We cruise Sunday 31st! Can't wait. [emoji568]
satxdiver Posted January 29, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 29, 2016 The CB is due into Bayport on Sunday, 1/31. Fog is always a problem this time of year on the Texas gulf coast and that includes Houston/Galveston. I looked at the weather report and fog is not mentioned not to say it will not occur. If the captain thinks fog may be a problem, he may return the ship to port late Saturday night. At this point all we can do is watch and wait. You can watch the Bayport cam at http://www.portofhouston.com/cruise-information/live-cruise-terminal-cam/
tioalmsp Posted January 29, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 29, 2016 From the National Weather Service... MARINE... THE PRESSURE GRADIENT WILL INCREASE STARTING TOMORROW INTO SATURDAY AS LOW PRESSURE IN THE LEE OF THE ROCKIES DEEPENS. A MODERATE TO OCCASIONALLY STRONG ONSHORE FLOW WILL PERSIST THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT. THIS MAY REQUIRE SMALL CRAFT EXERCISE CAUTION AS SEAS BUILD TO AROUND 5 TO 7 FEET WITH A LONG SOUTHERLY FETCH. THE NEXT COLD FRONT WILL CROSS THE GULF COASTAL WATERS LATE MONDAY NIGHT OR EARLY TUESDAY. A SMALL PERIOD OF SEA FOG MAY BE POSSIBLE SUN/MON AS SFC DEW POINTS INCREASE CLOSE TO THE MID 60S AND SHELF WATERS REMAIN IN THE UPPER 50S. toosaxykk Posted January 29, 2016 #8 Share Posted January 29, 2016 DH and I sail on CB on March 13th and have seen so many posts about fog delaying return or departure. Is this common into March as well or more of these winter months of December- February! We are hoping and praying for smooth sailing! Thanks! moki'smommy Posted January 29, 2016 #9 Share Posted January 29, 2016 I can't speak to March, but it bit us badly in November. I think they have basically gotten used to it and are returning to the Galveston area a little early so if there is a break in the fog, they can get the ship into port. Yes, I realize that bringing her in early means invoking Texas laws re alcohol and casino, but better that than a delayed cruise.
dforeigner Posted January 30, 2016 #10 Share Posted January 30, 2016 (edited) While sailing back to Houston on board the Emerald last March 2015, the Captain announced about possible fog delaying our arrival on Sunday. He advised that NCL had docked late due to the fog on Saturday morning and there was fog in the forecast for Sundays arrival. We made it inside the channel (Trinity Bay) by 3ish AM and we experienced no fog at all. Even the drive out of the port area was fog free. So yes, it is in the forecast, but sometimes, forecasts are wrong. :D Edited January 30, 2016 by dforeigner
pablo222 Posted January 30, 2016 #11 Share Posted January 30, 2016 (edited) So yes, it is in the forecast, but sometimes, forecasts are wrong. :D Yup -- the second time I was on Emerald in Houston, the forecast was for no fog. Around 0300 Sunday morning we simply stopped at the pilot station for 6 hours due to "NO" fog. This made people very cranky. The first time I was on Emerald, the forecast was for increasing fog. It was perfect. We arrived around 0530, clear. By 0700 you couldn't even see the parking lot from the ship. You don't have to go to the casino to gamble, just sail on a ship out of Houston... satxdiver Posted January 30, 2016 #14 Share Posted January 30, 2016 Houston area marine forecast: SYNOPSIS FOR HIGH ISLAND TO MATAGORDA SHIP CHANNEL OUT 60 NM ONSHORE FLOW WILL STRENGTHEN THIS WEEKEND. MODERATE ONSHORE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TONIGHT AND SATURDAY NIGHT. THERE IS A CHANCE THAT SEA FOG MAY DEVELOP OVER THE WEEKEND AND EARLY IN THE UPCOMING WEEK. HOWEVER...ONSHORE WINDS MAY BECOME TOO STRONG FOR FOG DEVELOPMENT. A COLD FRONT IS EXPECTED TO MOVE OFF THE COAST ON TUESDAY.
LEtue Posted January 30, 2016 #15 Share Posted January 30, 2016 I can't imagine there will be fog on Sun. It is supposed to be 80 degrees! Warmer air riding above cooler sea water creates the potential for sea fog. The colder water surface actually acts to cool the air just above it, and a reduction of just a few degrees can take the humid air down to, or close to, the dewpoint. If that happens a sea fog bank forms that transported by the prevailing wind. We often get sea fog along the west coast of FL from November - March when the sea temps cool down and we get warmer days.

Is this common into March as well or more of these winter months of December- February! We are hoping and praying for smooth sailing! Thanks! We have sailed out of Galveston and Houston a total of three times in March and once in May. So far, we have not experienced any fog issues. I say so far because one of these days, we may get to experience a fog delay.

Is this common into March as well or more of these winter months of December- February! We are hoping and praying for smooth sailing! Thanks! We have sailed out of Houston/Galveston starting with our first cruise and almost every year afterwards. We have sailed in all the months between November and March. Of all those times we have had fog issues only a few times that can be counted on one hand with fingers remaining. Fog happens but certainly not all the time by any means. We only hear about here when fog does impact the cruises. All the fog-less cruises are not mentioned.

Rare donswife Posted January 31, 2016 #19 Share Posted January 31, 2016 I think we had a temporary captain for captain Nash's vacation. I saw Captain Nash on the Patter for today when we were in the print shop.

Colo Cruiser Posted January 31, 2016 #21 Share Posted January 31, 2016 I think we had a temporary captain for captain Nash's vacation. I saw Captain Nash on the Patter for today when we were in the print shop. Usually 2 Captains share in the rotation so probably not a temporary Captain. There are fill ins though and the rotations can change frequently.
