Although damage to Legend was minor, if they were going to cancel

next weeks cruise, when would they let passengers know? Just curious how and when they would notify everyone.

Cruiselines generally notify the passengers when the decision has been made. It can be by email, phone....or, if you've booked with a TA, they will notify him/her...and he will notify you...or should.

Anyone know the last time they had to cancel for one reason or another? Can't remember any off the top of my head (other than 9/11).

They cancelled Carnival Celebration in August, 2006 because it ran aground in the Bahamas. We were notified by email about 4 days before we were to sail!!

Our Cruise on the Celebration was also cancelled in Feb 2000. The ship had caught fire a few weeks before our trip and they put it in dry dock. Then, week by week, they cancelled about 4 cruises. We found out on Monday that we wouldn't be sailing the following Sunday.

To give out TA credit, she got us moved to the Carnival Destiny (then a new ship), upgraded from inside to balcony, 50% of our money back, the same price on Carnival air and hotel-eventhough Miami was more expensive than New Orleans. She also got us an additional 50% off a future cruise.

The next time we tried to go out of New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina hit. I'm thinking we are just not meant to go there!

It would actually be interesting if John did a blog on the repairs and how they get men and material to the ship to do them. I wonder if any minor hull "dents" just get painted over.

They paint over scrapes, dents, and scratches all the time. With a moving object the size of the ship coming into contact with piers on a regular basis, there are bound to be minor battle scars. :D

These guys won't be doing this repair, but one of my customers does teak installation and repair on cruise ships. They meet the ship at its departure port with all the supplies, and load everything aboard. Then they do the work in bits and pieces in the middle of the night so that the passengers would never know anything's going on (except possibly for the daily appearance of new teak in the midst of older faded teak). They can do a surprisingly large amount of decking in one 7 day cruise. I suspect this work will be done in a similar fashion.

There won't be any cancellation due to the minor damage. If they did cancel for some reason, they woudl contact you by whatever means was appropriate. Email if the date is several days away, or telephone if the sail date is very near.

Always give the cruise line your cell phone for contact, and take the phone with you when traveling.

I'm in total agreement that over-painting is a common practice, but they might have a wee bit of a problem accomplishing that.

It clearly shows that the railing/track used for the movable crew platform (used for window washing and painting) is all goobered up. Could create a challenge.

...We were just finishing up our cruise when about 5am as the Fantasy was getting ready

to come back to port.....well, here's a bit of the old news wire story:

"NEW ORLEANS - A barge struck a cruise ship Saturday morning on the Mississippi River, leaving a 30-foot gash on the ship.

There were no injuries reported on Carnival Cruise Lines' Fantasy ship or the barge, authorities and company officials said.

The barge collided with the river bank, then struck the port side of the cruise ship as it waited to dock, according to a statement from the cruise ... "

Our cabin was pretty darn close to the trouble spot.....man was that one scary sound.

The damage was above the water line...the ship had no problems docking and we disembarked as usual with only one announcement about the damage and how it

would not affect our routine as we left the ship.

We didn't realize how big a deal it was, until we saw it on the local New Orleans news,

and then heard that unfortunately; after boarding the next cruise; they decided to cancel

and had to disappoint alot of people. They allowed folks to stay on overnite with full services (except casino of course), gave them a full refund and 50 percent towards their next booking. Considering it was not Carnival's fault; more than fair. It was repaired by the

next cruise.

John's blog tells the details....it seems to have worked out in a lucky way...no major damage...the fact that they are sailing says a LOT

some ships do sail around with scrapes and damages from piers, wind etc

..my guess is you won't even know the difference

I think the workers are like "elves"...they get stuff done at night or something

I have seen carpets changed, stuff painted or moved...like "magic"...

Enjoy your cruise! Bring us pictures please <grin>
