Day Trip to Anchorage from Whiettler

Is it possible to make a day trip to Anchorage ? We and another couple are

:) planning a cruise on the Island Princess next May . The other couple would like to make a trip to Anchorage . If possible what is the best way ?:confused:

Yes it's possible if you have a decent amount of time in port. We did a B2B cruise that turned around in Whittier last summer and so we were there from early in the morning and not departing until 9:30 p.m., so we had lots of time. We rented a car at Avis which is a short walk from the dock and we drove to Anchorage for the day with many stops to enjoy the gorgeous scenery on the way there and back. Just keep in mind that when you are going in and out of Whittier, there is a one way tunnel that opens for departing traffic at the top of the hour and for returning traffic at the half hour. You just have to plan your departure and return time to coincide with the tunnel schedule.

You would probably want to rent a car from Avis in Whittier.

 

According to the Princess website the ships will now leave Whittier at 8:30pm. So you would probably want to be back in Whittier, no later than the 6:30pm tunnel.

Thank you for the good information. We are booked B2B from Vancouver on 5-31-2010 and were looking for suggestions for our day in Whittier since we won't be changing cabins.

 

We already plan to rent a car in both Juneau and Skagway on one of the 2 port days. Of course the steam train excursion in Skagway on a Friday is the reason for our choice of dates.
