A third Carnival Dream class ship ordered

It looks like Carnival will be expanding its fleet with the Dream class, as expected:

http://www.cruiseindustrynews.com/cruise-news/3451-12109-new-130000-ton-ship-ordered-for-carnival-cruise-lines-unit-.html

No surprise really. I'd say the biggest surprise is that first new order ship for Carnival post-recession (almost post-recession anyway) is for it's main brand, Carnival Cruise Line.

I KNOW that Carnival Corp. is looking to expand its Princess fleet, so why wouldn't the first new order be for Princess?

You know what this tells me ... Carnival Corp is waiting to order a new build for Princess because they are coming out with a NEW design for Princess. Exciting! This is of course all speculation on my part. Ha ha! :D

Thoughts?

The first link is this thread.

Whoops didn't see the other thread. I did a search for new order and it didn't come up so I figured it wasn't posted.

It was supposed to be this thread. ;) My post was put on a 3rd thread, not this one. Looks like the hosts merged two of the threads into one.

Actually I think it has more to do with modern tonnage that can keep it on par long term. The deal they struck is extremely interesting as it is set on the dollar, not the euro. I think Fincanteri is really looking for the business...this order at $200k per berth was a client cost driven deal.

Carnival needs more berths in modern tonnage..it has a number of older ships that are adequate but can not compete with what has been coming out in the past 5 years in the 7-10 day market (look at their newer ships then look at the oldest ship in the fleet). I suspect the Fantasy class will be either moved to Carnival's Euro operations or simply sold off. (Holiday has been moved to europe). By doing so the next tier of vessels can raise the profile of the company in the 3-5 day cruise market.

Princess new designs? Not heard anything coming down the pike..that would be interesting but given how CCL has given the Princess design to other brands I am betting they'll stick with it.

I strongly doubt this will happen anytime soon. Carnival has sunk way too much money into those ships recently to get rid of them before they get their investment back.

Not sold within the next year...but re-assigned to another CCL division or re-assigned overseas is a strong possibility in 2011 or after. I could see the lego'd balconies doing well in the Medit. market where much of the secondary middle to lower tier ships are balcony-less.

So are you suggesting that the Fantasy class vessels will be used to expand Carnival Cruise Line's European cruise repertoire or will those ships be transferred to Costa Cruise Line?

No I am suggesting like the old Carnival Holiday and the Carnival Celebration that Carnival's remaining older tonnage could be reassigned to Iberocruceros..their European subsidary that has already absorbed older CCL ships. Costa would not be on the radar for used ships like this...they are the Carnival of Europe afterall.

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO pseudochicken: From what I've been reading Carnival has plans to build a Queen Elizabeth 3 for their Cunard Cruise Line. Don't know about any building for Princess. And of course, they are building more Dream Class ships. My last two cruises were on the Dream. Not that impressive.

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO pseudochicken: Several reasons, 1) At the Pursar's Desk, Customer Service, they really didn't know what they are doing. Two people gave me two different answers to the same question. They were both wrong. 2) The ship vibrates sometimes violently as it enters a port. Try eating with your plate moving over the table. Also, waiters came out to hold tables steady. Does not happen on other Carnival ships I've been on. 3) No enclosed area at aft of Lido Deck. The Triumph and Victory have enclosed areas where food is served on Aft section of ship. Also, pools and hot tubs are located there. Not on the Dream. 4) Pizza was never ready when you went there. I was always told, "in five to seven minutes." One time I went there four times before they had pizza. 5) Casino personell really have no idea of how to be dealer on most games. Most noticeably at craps table. They should learn on how to deal with people. 6) A couple i was friendly with invited my wife and I to see their stateroom. I thought I was back in the infantry listening to field artillary going overhead. 7) Ship does not give a smooth ride in inclimate weather.

After sinking money into them and making them so kid friendly to cater to the "family" market?

I highly doubt that.

They need them for their short itins that attract alot of business.

A question Casino Player:

When did you go on your cruise? I have heard nothing but bad things from people who were on the cruise to nowhere from New York. There was a storm out to sea I suppose plus the crew were still new to the ship. But other than that I have heard many good reviews.

Princess has had a recent spate of new ships including the Ruby Princess which debuted this year or last. It doesn't pay to grow too fast.

Ruby Princess came out last year.

I agree it is not good to grow too fast, but I am merely relaying a statement by Carnival Corp. that their first priority is to expand the Princess fleet. Just seems a bit odd that they say one thing and do another.

That is an awful idea. The Fantasy-class is very successful for Carnival, and ideal for 3-5 night cruises. Heck, I wish they'd put Inspiration back on 7-night duty. :D

The Fantasy vessels are starting to show their age. They are the oldest in the Carnival fleet and if ANY of the competition decides to re-position (some already have) a younger vessel on the same market it is going to make CCL step their operation up. And many of these vessels have traditional balcony designs..the Lego'd balconies CCL did are simply not going to go over as well in another couple of years. If one or two of the Fantasy ships were repositioned..a Destiny Class could fill the void (and if it is the Destiny good god Carnival get her into drydock and overhaul her! She has developed a nasty reputation as being mechanically challenged).

The Fantasy ships are, for the most part, good work horses. But they are fast becoming dated..CCL is going to have replace them.

They just dumped millions of $$ updating them and bringing them up todate with technology and entertainment.

Your speculation does not make good business sense. They would most likely phase out the one and only Destiny class ship (The Destiny :p:rolleyes: ) since it obviously has some design flaws, since there is only one of them and they moved on to the Triumph and conquest class, and is looking to be less durable mechanically than the dependable Fantasy class.
