Liberty smoking + Why Not Today

Just a warning for sensitive non-smokers, Liberty is not a good ship. If you look at a ship map the casino, Champagne bar, Hoof and Claw, and main pool bar are all smoking venues and none have any doors so the entire 4th floor (not the theater or dining rooms, they're closed) and chunks of the 5th are too smoky on sea days and evenings. This is just for sensitive people, my sister doesn't smoke and couldn't go in the casino, but was fine outside of it (PS: she said the "non-smoking" area of the casino was just as smoky, there's nothing resembling a barrier or smoke-eater anywhere.) The 11th floor was okay though, the pool bar is in the middle and the solarium and kid's area are on either side, but since there's no smoking on the sides those spaces are clear. The 12th floor (and all other outdoor decks) had smoking on one side but not the other and there was little to no intrusion, so the interior was the only problem.

I enjoy peeking at the cruise compass early, so I took photos of the 2009 Mexico and Belize itinerary Why Not Today pages. I posted them at

http://travel.webshots.com/album/575827894gUKVuD?vhost=travel

I didn't photograph the front pages, the second and 5th days were formal, all others were casual.

Yes....Here goes... but I just have to say..."JMHO" not to be confused with any ones rights but I will be glad when the no smoking sign goes up for good on cruiseships....Sorry to anyone offended..but I recently lost my beloved Dad to lung cancer so right now smoking is a sensative subject...best of health to everyone and breathe in that ocean air...

As a smoker, I was appalled at the smoking on Liberty, I frequent the English pubs on Voyager and Freedom class ships and Liberty is the only ship that allowed smoking in 100% of the pub, on other Freedom class it was limited to the bar area and the section behind the railing, and on Voayger class, to the bar area only. To make a signer perform with people smoking right under their noses should not be happening, i even emailed RCI about the situation on Liberty and received a phone call from them saying my concerns would be addressed, how did they address them?, by not changing the smoking policy on Liberty, but by making the pub on Freedom no smoking:confused:

Non smoking ships won't work, they lose too much money, hence the reason that Carnival scrapped the idea with the Carnival Paradise. It was originally non-smoking, but you then lose out big time.

Fortunately, there are many options for nonsmokers....Celebrity, Azamara, Oceania....and a few more....

From my personal experience on the IOS this past month:

No Smoking inside, in any venues except:

Upper floor of the Labyrinth (double set of closed doors kept it there)

Connoisseurs Lounge

Casino "Smokers Corner" till 11:30 AM only.

No smoking in any other indoor areas.

Happy Cruising,

TnT

Yes, but many will still sail RCCL-not take advantage of these ships-then, when that happens, the company will say it does not work and even those restrictions on those ships may vanish.................

Didn't carnival try this on one ship and it tanked-big time??

I am a smoker also, although not a heavy smoker....maybe 5 cigs a day at most. I have to say that on our Sept.,2009 cruise on Liberty that Boleros really smelled of cigarettes even though only one side and the bar allowed smoking. It really stunk! I could even smell it outside on the Promenade Deck when the doors would open. I did not notice the odor anywhere else on board including the casino which is unusual. We did not go into the pub, so I cannot speak to that. There were a lot of Brazilians and Europeans on our cruise and I know that smoking is somewhat more prevalent in Europe and South America than here in the USA, so maybe that was a factor? We did have a wonderful time and enjoyed the ship and our fellow passengers very much.

No, it didn't tank big time. It went pretty well for several years and then got moved to the West Coast and they discontinued it. According to Carnival, its profits were in line with other ships its size and age.

I wonder why they discontinued it on the West Coast?

I was on the IOS TA last week as well and can confirm the smoking locations for that voyage. The Casino was all non smoking for the first few days, then the 'smoker's corner' times were announced. My impression is that RCCL changes the policies as they see fit.

As a sensitive non smoker this concerns me since I can't rely on having a smoke free experience without avoiding some of the areas of the ship . I feel I paid to use all the ship's venues. I chose not to visit the casino after the change. To me it's like saying you can only pee in the pool in one corner and at certain times...

I believe Celebrity casino is a non smoking venue all the time.

When it was in the Caribbean Carnival had plenty of other seven day cruise options for smokers. When it moved to the West Coast, it was their only ship doing the the itineraries it was doing, so they felt they had to start allowing smoking.

I got this from wikipedia.

"The Paradise was built to be the world's first completely non-smoking cruise ship. Every step of her construction was done by non-smoking personnel and she was entered into service supported by several anti-smoking and cancer-prevention groups. "No smoking" signs were placed prominently on both sides of the ship and on the stern under the name.

Non-smoking rules were strictly enforced. No smoking materials of any kind were permitted aboard. If anything was seen or found, the passenger was fined $250 and put off at the next port (transportation home to be provided at passenger's own expense). Due to poor revenue, Carnival decided to discontinue the smoke-free ship in December 2003 because non-smokers tend to not drink or gamble as much as those accustomed to smoke."

And Wikipedia is always accurate.

I notice that there is no citation for that statement. Here's one with a citation, Los Angeles Times 12/20/2003:

Jennifer de la Cruz, a Carnival spokeswoman .... "Financially, it actually outperformed what it would have done ... as a smoking ship on a seven-day Caribbean deployment.".

I have to agree with you....we were on the Liberty in Oct, 2009 and every night Boleros was very smokey. Also noticed that there was a lot of smoking in the casino every night, even on formal nights. On our last Explorer cruise there was no smoking in the casino on formal nights....I thought all the ships did that?? Also, I thought there was more smoking on the Liberty than any other cruise we've taken......it still was our best cruise!

That's not correct. It tanked, big time.

While it's occupancy rates were in line with the Carnival fleet, the onboard revenue was not even close. Carnival did give it a good try - for 6 years or so...

In addition, they were unable to attract the charters and large groups which are the bread and butter of any cruise line. In any large group of people or in a large organization, there will be a percentage of smokers who will not pay to cruise on a ship where there is no smoking. Hence, the group and charter business fell way below the average of the fleet and, with the reduced onboard revenue, Paradise was not performing well on the bottom line.

What we all need to remember is cruise companies are businesses... They are in the business to make money/profit.

While they will do everything they can to make cruising a great experience for their passengers, they will not do it at the expense of profit.

Just like any other business. What works will remain. What doesn't work will be discarded.
