We loved the Hotel Silla in the oltrarno; walkable to major sites, nice terrace, quiet area. It is NOT a giant chain hotel, so if you are looking for large rooms and typical American experience, go elsewhere. But if you are looking for a European experience with great service in a beautiful former villa, check it out.

We spent 4 nights in Florence in July and can heartily recommend the Palazzo Niccolini al Duomo. It is just one block from the Duomo. The lounge is like a palace and they served a lovely breakfast in there. And we had the largest bathroom ever in Europe. Do check it out!

We redeemed some miles at the Holiday Inn in Florence.

As we were travelling by driving ourselves we were more than happy that there was no need for us to drive and park in the city center.

For 1.20 EUR we took the bus from here in 20 minutes to get to the major attractions ins downtown area. And parking in the hotel was free and the highway exit was just two blocks away.

As my friend is true coffee-addict he was glad to read that Florence best coffee-bar was just opposite of our hotel:

Have a great time in Florence.

We loved it...

We spent five nights in Florence three years ago at the Hotel Davanzati, perenially top-rated on sister website tripadvisor and included in the Rick Steves' guidebooks.

Not fancy, but clean, and great location near the Porcellino leather market, just 10 minutes walk to all the major sights, and great service from the family which owns and operates the place. They will recommend and book restaurants and tours, take care of pre-booking at the Uffizi and Accademia, offer a happy hour free every evening where you can meet fellow guests, and take care of all your needs. Only negative - one flight of stairs to their elevator (but they will do all the luggage carrying for you).

We stayed at The Hotel Rivoli and loved every minute. It is affiliated with Best Western but is very unique. A converted monastery with central courtyard where you can have a drink and relax, as well as a huge hot tub to soak away the day. Great breakfasts and a very helpful staff. Ten minute walk to the Duomo, 5 minutes form the train station. It really feels like Italy when we stay there.

Right across the street is Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, a perfumery that was founded in the 1200's and still operated by the same family. Not a tourist trap and an unusual find. Really worth a visit.

We stayed at the Hotel Sempione last fall. It is a budget hotel and it was very good. We booked there because we were arriving by train and leaving by car. It is within blocks of the train station and the Hertz office. Very clean, very friendly, and great breakfast. We got a room with a small balcony at the back. It is within easy walking distance of all sights. Worked for us and we would definately return.

Can anyone recommend a nice hotel in Florence, Italy near the major sites.

We loved the Hotel Plaza Lucchesi http://www.plazalucchesi.it/ . Stayed there 4 nights in 2007. It's right on the Arno and you can walk to just about all of the tourist sites. Large rooms with well equiped baths and good A/C. Excellent breakfast buffet. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We booked early and got a 40% discount.
