What about the crew who smoke? They can hardly stop passengers smoking and continue to allow the crew to puff away. The ship is their home during a voyage as well as their workplace.

The other thing about Carnival is that the ships that have designated spa cabins have that entire area non-smoking--including cabins and balconies with stiff penalties if anyone is caught smoking in the cabin or on the balcony. That would be a nice start for HAL to consider--although it would bug me a tad to have to pay extra for a non-smoking cabin.

That is only on two ships, the new Dream and Splendor so far.

I was just on the Dream transatlantic in a no smoking spa room, very nice, but you did have to pay extra but that was ok becasue I wanted the spa amenities!

Most of the casino was smoke free too.

One reason I booked an OV on our first HAL cruise. You'll love it, best stateroom ever (well, not counting the old NCL Crown).

I think if HAL would just segregate the ship so one side is smoking and the other isn't, would make it more tolerable for non-smokers and give a cruise option to smokers. If you make a late reservation and stuck on the wrong side, at least you will know.

 

 

 

There are too few smokers to do that. If the numbers were 50% smokers and the same non-smoker, it might be viable. That is not the case.

There are restrictions where crew can smoke in crew areas of the ship. No smoking is permitted in their dining areas and it is more limited than ever as to where they can smoke.

I was flying some 100,000 miles a year when the airline smoking restrictions began. At first, flights to the US had smoking restricted to a "Smoking Section". On US flights it was in the back of the bus. Air France chose to have smoking on the left side of the aircraft, and non smoking on the right side!

In Antwerp, on a business trip, I was in a restaurant where an American woman demanded to be seated in a non smoking section. The waiter put her at a table in a deserted part of the room, but as locals came in she was surrounded by people lighting up cigarettes. She complained, and the waiter said "But there is no one smoking at your table. And it goes on.

I hate to even approach this tired subject as no opinions wil ever be changed.

 

On our last cruise we were invited to the question and answer session with the senior officers on the last day of the cruise. An avid non smoker brought up the subject of HAL going non smoking and about the surveys that they do all the time.

 

I raised my hand and poointed out that I was a smoker and voiced my opinion of the smoking policies.

 

The hotel manager stated this (I PARAPHRASE):

-Approximately 7-9% of our cruisers are smokers.

-Approximately 30% of our cruisers sail with a smoker.

-There was a cruise line recently (he would nat say who) that tried to go non smoking or severely restrict smoking and they almost went ankrupt.

-It is virtually imposible to book a group without smokers.

-Holland America has no plans to change their smoking policies in the near future.

 

I am just reporting went on at that session and not voicing my opinion.

 

I just put salt and butter on the new popcorn machine we got for christmas

CC member Sage sent me the photos of her 2005 cruise and this may have been from the same year. Not sure though.

 

I agree, that it could be no smoking during eating hours, but, who knows.

I would like to see No Smoking in the Casino, or at least a non-smoking section. We were on the Carnival Liberty in November & they would have temporary No Smoking signs that would be placed on some slot machines, but never consistently.

dont want to burst your bubble but if you look up on the top deck there is a dirty big funnel blowing smoke out,you could ask the captain to switch it off when you are on your balcony i suppose.just enjoy yourself and dont worry what other people are doing to enjoy the themselves

The funnel (ls)have never bothered us on our veranda. Years ago, I remember a few times when it 'burped' soot onto aft pool and that was nasty but we have never had unpleasant funnel odors that I recall.

Thanks. :-) We had an OV on the Rotterdam summer before last. Enjoyed it.

 

This time, we are on the Prinsendam, but there are three of us in the room (DS, 20, will be with us). We got the largest OV there is, which is larger than some balcony rooms. I'm still a bit concerned about feeling claustophobic, but.... the difference in price is substantial, and since this is Europe, we'd rather put the money toward ports.

It looks like a crew dining area or "messroom". I believe they double up as recreation spaces when food is not being served.

I asked a friend who works on board HAL and he said they started restricting where crew could smoke a few years ago and now they are restricted to a smoking room separate from the main recreation spaces or their cabins.

The totally non-smoking Carnival Paradise was launched in 1998. She remained a totally non-smoking ship through 2003 when Carnival decided they were losing too much money in casino and liquor sales. It still has the most limited smoking venues of the Carnival line.

We just came off the Eurodam and frankly 2nd hand smoke was a problem for us. On several occasions we were enjoying our aft veranda only to have a smoker in a neighboring cabin light up. The smoke would force us inside. We also had to leave the piano bar as the smoke from the casino was more than we could take. Why would they put a popular venue like the Piano bar off the Casino? I was a heavy smoker for many years but the smell now makes me sick. That being said, I fully support the rights of smokers but HAL should restrict smoking on verandas as it affects those next door. They could do this by making on side smoking as others have suggested. They could and should do the same for cabins just like hotels do / have done for years.

We have the same problem.

We have enjoyed the Piano Bars on the R and S class ships for years. But for the last 2 years we have sailed only on the Vista class ships. The location of the Piano Bar to the smoky Casino has kept us away from there. They leave the Piano Bar doors open most of the day and the smoke just filters into there.

We have also had problems with using our verandah on a number of cruises and have been forced inside because of smokers right next to us.

HAL could never have part of the Casino non-smoking -- there is absolutely no way that the smoke would not "float" over to that section. It is one big open area.

As it is the ventilation in the Casino on all HAL ships is terrible. You can actually see a low cloud of smoke at various times in there.

Even on the couple of evenings when they have a couple of hours of "non-smoking" you can still smell the smoke from before.
