First night dinner??? Help!

Recommended Posts

If our luggage doesn't make it to the cabin by dinner (first seating), will we be let in with our travel clothes on?? (Shorts, golf shirts, skorts for the girls...no t-shirts or jeans)

Thanks!!!

The first night is very casual in the dining room. They are well aware of the fact that many people don't have their luggage by dinner time so don't worry about what you are wearing. I would suggest putting a change of clothes and a few personal items in one of the carry-ons just in case your luggage takes an extended vacation. On our VOS cruise we got a notice on the 2nd day that several people were still looking for their luggage and asked that we check if we got any extras.

We received our luggage just before dinner. I had on nice jeans and a white top (which I had traveled in ). I quickly grabbed a yellow light sweater and tied it around my shoulders to make my outfit a little more dressier. Most folks in the dinng room were still in their traveling clothes (but no shorts).

We always take a carry on with us. In it we have a decent change of clothes. For me it's usually a pair of slacks and a polo shirt. By packing a change of clothing in a carry on it makes for a more relaxing first day. We don't have to stress over luggage.

Just in case it doesn't occur to you, in addition to something suitable (but not dressy) to wear to dinner, your carryon bag should also include what you might need the first few hours, like a bathing suit, coverup, flipflops, sunglasses, sunscreen...so that you can tour the ship and end up having a nice, cold, fancy drink up on the pool deck!!!

Sorry, Merion Mom...not quite the expert on cruising as you obviously are. I will try to restrain myself in the future from asking stupid questions. I just needed to know.

Thanks everybody for your advice!

We always take a change of clothes in our carry-on, just in case the luggage doesn't make it before dinner - or even until the next morning. We usually fly down, and have that wrinkled, messed-up airplane look, so it's nice to be able to change. I always wear a pair of capris, top, and sandals. DH wore khakis and polo shirt. There were times, though, that we were just lazy and tired, and ate at the buffet the first night. Make sure to pack any valuable items like camera, medications, any jewelry, etc. in your carry-on, too. Have a greaat time!

We always wear shorts for dinner the first night. No one ever has said anything. If they did, we would say that we did not get our luggage. So relax, your on vacation and there is at least one night that you can be comfortable. Enjoy dinner in shorts, its great.

And, why does the first night have to be shorts night for you? 99% of the rest of the cruisers are able to manage appropriate attire.

It's a NICE (as in, NICE!!!) restaurant.....can you pack a pair of slacks in your carry-on for each of you to slip on just before going to dinner?

Yes, you're on vacation, but the casual dining is in the Windjammer, which I believe is open on the first night. If not, how about slipping-on-a-pair-of-slacks-just-before-going-to-dinner-that-you've-packed-in-your-carry-on?

Sorry Peggy, I cant do that, no long pants for first night. As for 99% of the people doing what you suggest. It not that high. Probably more like 60%. Im a natural born trouble maker and usually go against the flow. I do put on a suit for the formal nights, but I can imagine what it feels like to be in a straight jacket. Suits and ties are sooooooo uncomfortable. I do change immediately after dinner, you guessed it, back to shorts, flip flops and a t shirt. I was looking at Holland America, but they now have a no shorts in the dining room for breakfast and lunch. Thats unaccectable for a vacation. Come on Peggy, try going for comfort once in your life and wear shorts the first night. You will become a convert. Soon, with your help there will be more and more of us, and maybe some day, RCI will be a shorts only cruise.

Shorts are just no apprioate attire in the dining room. Would you go out to ear in a fine restaurant in shorts?? ( I know the line_ you paid your money-but so did we , and a dress code is for everyone)
As for the person who was afraid of her luggage not making it to the room, we always pack a duffle bag with my swimsuit and cover-up, ( so we can change and enjoy the pool the first afternoon ) and a change of clothing for the evening for me and my dh. Our first cruise my luggage did not make its way to our cabin until the6 am the next morning and only had the clothes I had travled with the day before-- I learned my lesson fast

Depending on how you get to the ship, I have always worn something that would be suitable for dinner and packed something to lounge around in by the pool in my carry on. Since DW and DD and I prefer the early seating, it works out well. If, for what ever reason, you get a bit disheveled during your travel, you can always skip the dining room and hang out in the winding jammer, but I don't think that they would mind in the formal dining room. But please, just don't wear shorts and t-shirts.

I wear shorts alllllllllllll day long, every day on a cruise, and so does DH. DH (as I've posted before) has his "uniform" of shorts all the time. We just like to respect the customs on board ship and wear appropriate clothing to the NICE restaurant-style dining room.

I digress. First night is usually quite casual, and we all know it. It's a good idea to plan for the occasional late luggage, though.

I do not understand some people's disdain for shorts. Granted, I live in FL where is it considerably casual, but nice shorts and a collared shirt are perfectly acceptable attire for even the nicest restuarants in town.

For females, we can get away with wearing capri's, shirts or even a skort and be fine on casual night or dining for breakfast and lunch. I don't see what the big deal is for men to wear a nice pair of khaki shorts???
BTW, you ARE sitting during the meal and most ppl can't see you from the waist down anyway!

We always respect the dress guidelines, but I never understood why the big fuss.

We need a Holiday...
