Plasticmouse Posted January 25, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 25, 2010 Hi, We are going for a cruise with Carnival in Feb. I just came to know that their vacation protection plan will not cover us as we are not residents of the US or Canada. Please suggest good, recognized options for purchasing travel insurance from. Thanks, Vivek
pms4104 Posted January 25, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 25, 2010 Many board members suggest www.insuremytrip.com to compare various policies. I'm not trying to be snarky ... but you live in Connecticut, right? So, why would you be disqualified from purchasing certain insurance products? Plasticmouse Posted January 25, 2010 Author #3 Share Posted January 25, 2010 Yup that's what I thought. However I am in the US on a working visa and not a citizenship card. Looks like technically that is not what "resident" is. In fact, I purchased the policy from them and then read the details and found this out. I was not aware of that exclusion. You might call Carnival to confirm that their policy will not cover you.
cherylandtk Posted January 26, 2010 #5 Share Posted January 26, 2010 I am not so sure that the word "resident" in the insurance policies refers to immigration or citizenship status - I have always understand "resident" in that situation refers to "your primary home" and where you current reside, receive mail, register your kids for school, pay taxes or rent, and generally spend most of your nights of the year. I just re-read the Carnival Vacation Protection plan and did not see any exclusion for citizenship/LPR status. (What section makes you think there is an exclusion, perhaps I missed it?) To be sure, I would suggest you discuss this with a knowledgable insurance agent, and I can recommend the folks at http://www.tripinsurancestore.com. They have a toll-free number and live chat as well. If it does turn out you need to buy a non US/non Canadian policy, they do have links on their site for such a policy. Plasticmouse Posted January 26, 2010 Author #6 Share Posted January 26, 2010 Thanks. i will do that. What struck me with this thought is when i was filling up the cruise documents, if I used CT as my residence, the form asked me for something like a residency #, and it seemed like the green card no. to me. Not all cruise lines have every permutation as how you are here legally. They don't use "residence or resident" as its legal term either. Residence is your permanent place of adobe. But most places if you have an address that you live at for more than a couple of weeks that is your residence anyway. But you should really ask the cruise line as their definition may be none of the above.

Plasticmouse Posted January 29, 2010 Author #9 Share Posted January 29, 2010 I did call the vacation protection plan no. of Carnival and spoke to 2-3 agents. There is a mixed response to the question if I am eligible or not and what the dfinition of "resident" is. However, all of thyem mentioned that if I have been sold the policy, then they will honor it. Not sure if they mean it or they don't want me to take a refund of the premium. Let me see how the trip goes. I will post my experience once I am back. In the mean time, I checked with my medical insurance company. They would cover medical costs to 90%. Not the evacuation costs etc. though.
vandus Posted November 29, 2010 #10 Share Posted November 29, 2010 Plasticmouse - How was your cruise? It will be nice to see info about your trip..
donaldsc Posted November 29, 2010 #11 Share Posted November 29, 2010 Insurance sold by your cruise company is always overpriced and under-featured. It is a great profit center for them. Call Insure-my-trip and compare prices and coverage. DON
njhorseman Posted November 29, 2010 #12 Share Posted November 29, 2010 It helps to pay attention to dates. Prior to today, the last post on this thread was in January...10 months ago, and the OP was cruising in February...9 months ago. Giving advice today isn't going to be of much help. ;)
