Nickel & Whining....

Well said everyone. I will be taking my first NCL cruise in December and can't wait!

In reading some of the complaining threads it is easy to see that some people live to complain. And some of them are easy to see thru that the complainer is just trying to stir the pot.

I just do not see how any of the changes can ruin my cruise.

I think your last sentence sums up how I feel about cruising in general. I have certainly posted both positive and negative comments across several different threads here, but I generally try to make them more in the sense of a 'heads up' to other CC members of things about which/for which they might want to be aware. I have great appreciation that anyone who is lucky enough to have the LUXURY of cruising needs to keep things in perspective. The worst cruise I was ever on was still a wonderful vacation, and a better vacation than most folks in the US ever get to enjoy. We are blessed and fortunate, and it would take more than an error by NCL or a change by Carnival to change my opinion on that fact. Bon Voyage, Aloha! POA April 3, 2010. Woooo Hoooo

You are so correct. I came on this board to learn about our upcoming cruise. What to do, advice from past passengers, and what not to miss to make our cruise more enjoyable. Nothing worse than getting home and going - gosh! I wish we would have done that because it may be years before we get to experience it again. I like to read all the comments to gain knowledge and will continue to do so, but I agree that enough is enough when it comes to complaining- if a thread has over 300 comments it's time to eliminate the post or file it away somewhere else.

no i'm not going to whine, whinge, moan or belittle anyone, their opinion, their right to say or not say but

rather than everyone saying what is missing that you have all come to love and enjoy in previous cruises why dosen't someone take the time to say what newbee's like myself and my partner can expect.

a couple of people on cc have been very helpful in this respect and i have appreciated their input. personally i don't want to know what i will be missing because i never had it in the first place, that is the whole point about being new to cruising. i want to know what i can expect, how much it is going to cost me for a drink, how much is that meal going to cost. I know that NCL do certain packages, are they worth it or is it better to purchase the items individually etc etc etc.

so to bamagal and newmexiconita and jannandjohn your tips and advice greatly received :D

This IS confusing!

I tire of people's definition of whining. At what point on this website can you share displeasure without being accused of whining? And if your opinion is criticized and you attempt to clarify, they seem to gang up!

please.... some people just DONT agree with a point of view, and rather than respectfully reply or just let it go they have to comment "people WHINE when they SHOULD be happy to be cruising" what is the point of this website if sharing any disappointment isnt tolerated? Agree to disagree and grow up!

And the only reason those threads get so long is because of the badgering gangs- just waiting for someone with enough guts to try and justify their point of view so they can jump all over them with sarcasm and accusations- and here I am, getting sucked right into it

You hit the nail right on the head. You are not alone with your assessment.

I think people have had a couple of rough years financially, either with no raises or worse - no job. Sometimes dwelling on negativity helps them realize that other people are losing things/benefits/comfort too - and may make them feel better. IMHO, the things that are "gone" such as candy on my pillow and cheap champagne at embarkation and discounted laundry services were items that used to be "included" but they are never the items I am paying for when I choose to cruise.

I'm looking for comfortable, clean accommodations, a few days of relaxation with beautiful scenery, the opportunity to unpack once and wake up in a new place every couple of days, hopefully nice weather, a friendly and helpful crew, decent food, a casino, nice people to share the experience with. Everything else, while "included", doesn't factor into my decision whether to cruise or not.

Crusing since 1989, we have never taken a cruise we didn't love. We will always look for new adventures and opportunities with ships and itineraries. Candy on my pillow at night is never going to be a deciding factor in which cruise line we choose.

That pretty much sums it up doesn't it.....

dont sweat the small stuff, enjoy the things you do get, enjoy the poeple you are with, soak in the sun, the sights , experience new/different food/cultures etc

dont try to change everyone/everything around you, you will let some fun enjoyable experience pass you by.....wil it be perfect, not always,

Where did that come from? Sorry, but I'm not in a pack...in fact I've never been in the scouts.

BTW-I have no problems with someone disagreeing with me...but when everything someone posts is negative, they probably aren't cut out to cruise. But then, I have known some who aren't happy unless they're complaining-so whatever floats their boat :D

This is what RichNY and others are talking about. Why does anyone other than "your pack" have to be balanced in their opinion? You disagree on the amenities on NCL and nothing more. That's okay! Nothing wrong with hearing both sides of the argument! I don't belive RichNY is attacking NCL and he is just making some observations of recent changes.

Sometimes pointing out small things is what Cruise Critic is about. It's okay to disagree and that what makes these boards interesting.

What gets old is how 5 or 6 poster's bully and attack people who differ in their opinion. Trust me, if these changes were so major I would cancel my cruise with NCL. Since they are small issues we simply list them here on CC and don't sweat it much. I WILL HAVE A BALL ON MY NCL CRUISE!

Now I will patiently wait my lashing from newmexiconita, wink, njhorseman, seashark and others.

PS: Sometimes you are kinda funny. :D

From the different comments the OP made I don't think it was meant to say that no one should ever have a negative opinion. I believe the issue was pointing out that there have been multiple threads addressing the same issue over and over. I see the reality that everyone is not on everyday and often they start up a new post without reading the previous posts. However, it does get tiring seeing the same titles to threads over and over. Sometimes people start a negative thread with the same title as the negative thread right above it. It just seems weird. It is especially disconcerting because I just came back from the best vacation of my life.

I feel I learn a lot from the whiners. It gives me an oportunity to adjust my expectations and to ponder what is most important to me. It is definitely information that I input into my decision making. I also have gotten upset int he past with many people who indeed seem to be quite intolerant of any negative view whatsoever expressed. In fact, it intimidated me from posting for a long time. But right now I am with the OP, all those threads going at the same time pretty much got to me. And generally yes, I just avoid them. But you still get hit with those same titles over and over---still, in the end there is freedom of speech and this IS a forum. But that means it's okay for me to whine about the whiners, right? :D

EXACTLY!! :)

And...as far as the tree topic, yes, it was a hijack, no doubt. Sometimes little hijacks like that are meant to lighten up a thread and they are not meant as 'pack bonding'.

I find it really sad that this isn't obvious...but I guess if you're on a thread with a minority opinion, you could get a bit paranoid and defensive.

I appreciated that RichNY joined you & I with having a little fun on that. I guess we didn't see much else that could be added after about 300 posts on that thread

Well, did you find any ?????..;)

Zeno posted a link (seems to be gone now), but I don't recognize any of those as on the NCL wine list. But let me tell ya, speaking from personal experience (back 35 yrs or more ago) I recognize several as really cheap thrills!!!

Hummm-I wonder why I didn't see a Boones Farm there?

I agree. I learned from my first cruise to not let it bother me or ruin my cruise. We work too hard to get there. Did anyone see the MSN show last week about the behind the scenes look inside the NCL Pearl? They showed how to stay in business the cruise lines must sell and nickel and dime everyone. The fuel for a 7 day cruise costs a half a million dollars. The entertainment costs the ship money and they dont charge passengers and then the crew has to get paid and the ship insurance, etc. They must sell pictures, alcohol , excursions to make a profit. The CEO of NCL said the Pearl cruise was only 94% full so NCL broke even on the cruise. Just something to think about.

LOL -- "Boone's Farm"..AND "Ripple"--ah, the memories...:rolleyes::D

But - I digress. Count me in as also being tired of the b----ing and moaning all over the boards, ad nauseum. I admit, I have posted a few "criticisms" in the past while reviewing our cruise or commenting on what happened on a particular ship, but the constant complainers can really bring everyone down with all their negativity. A cruise is what you make of it. You need to let some things go, especially the petty things that don't matter. Occasionally, there may be a problem that needs to be addressed, but at least if one mentions it in the form of information or advice for future cruisers, then the comments have served the purpose.

Anyway, I'm going to take my own advice, lighten up, and look forward to our next cruise!;)

Since I started this post, I will add a few additional thoughts:

1. There is always two buck Chuck or in NJ (because of Tax), three buck chuck at Trader Joes, but not nickle wine.

2.Sometimes is a matter of personal atttitude. We were on the Dawn Rogue Wave and believe it or not, had a great time. Our room rug did get damp on deck 10, we were delayed but it happened at the end of the cruise and the rest of it was fun.

3. I, too, complain about what I find wrong or disappointing and will continue to do so in moderation. (perhaps the better definition) and I defend everyone's right to do so.

I am not looking to raise eyebrows or feed the pack. I found more than reasonable moderation and whined...or complained.

The thing about that report is most likely any other line could be substituted for NCL and any ship on any line could be substituted for the Pearl....just sayin'. ;):)
