Smoking smell bad on balconies?

Newbie cruiser here. How bad will it smell like smoke on balconies since people are allowed to smoke on them? We are not smokers, nor is our traveling buddies. But we are one cabin forward to our friends. So since they are essentially "downwind" from us, they will not be getting any wafts of smoke from our balcony. But I do worry about the cabin forward of us, one spot closer to the bow. If they are smokers, will we get smoke smells on our balcony since we are downwind of them? Sorry to ask stupid questions, I am new to cruising and have lots of questions.

I wouldn't worry about it. My wife & I spent plenty of time on our balcony when we cruised and we couldn't smell any smoke. All you can smell is that fresh ocean breeze. I would think at the speed the ship is moving, the smoke and smoke smell would dissipate into the air pretty quickly. The only place where we even noticed a smoking smell was the cigar bar (obviously) and the only reason we even dealt with that was because we had to pass through it to get to the Internet Cafe.

Enjoy your cruise!

We switched from Princess to Celebrity because Celebrity does not allow smoking on the balcony. It seemed like about half the time on Princess smoke was drifting in our direction, either from forward if we were sailing or the wind was from aft if we were in port. DW has severe problems with smoke, we have to travel with an air purifier just in case. We could only use our balcony about half the time we wanted to. So, yes, the smell can be noticeable, but unless you strongly object, it's tolerable.

Honestly, I don't remember it being that unbearable. DH and I both dislike the smell of smoke so much that we will try to hold our breath if we are walking past people smoking.

On one cruise, our neighbor did smoke but we just shut our balcony door and within 5 minutes he was done and the smell was gone. Other than having someone right next to us smoking, we didn't have a problem.

It really depends on how strong your sense of smell is and how sensitive you are to cigarette smoke. I am very bothered by cigarette smoke and am able to smell it if someone is smoking on a nearby balcony and the wind is blowing the smoke my way. For me it is strong enough to be unpleasant, but usually not overpowering. Celebrity has definitely become my top choice for cruising and their very stict smoking restrictions are a big part of this. No smoking on balconies, staterooms, casinos, and all indoor bars but one.

I'm a nonsmoker and have been on 5 Princess cruises, all balconies ranging from midship to all the way aft, and can truthfully say that I've never been bothered by smoke.

We had an aft balcony on one cruise and I did smell some "wacky weed" being smoked on someone's balcony.... It was, however, fleeting.

it's a shame that NCL (and others with lax smoking policies) do not have a non-smoking area on each deck. it would be nice to know i am picking a cabin that is situated next to another non-smoker. i would be so disappointed to spend time on my balcony and have to smell smoke from others. but it sounds like it won't be THAT bad. i am bringing a small, battery operated fan as well as a small fragrance mist so hopefully that will help diminish any crummy smoke smells.

I was able to smell smoke from time to time on my balcony. The only time it was reallly a problem was when there must have been several smokers lighting up at the same time, right next to us on a day with little wind. The ship was moving but the smell was strong. That said, cigarette smoke is something I'm sensitive to, so it might not have bothered someone else.

The chances of being bothered on your balcony by smoke is very slim. First of all, a lot of people hardly use their balconies except when pulling in to a port. In the day there are to many other things to do besides sitting on a balcony and smoking. At night it's usually too cold. Also, when the ship is moving at 15 or 20 mph, smoke won't linger long enough for you to smell it unless you have a very good imagination. Your chances of being bothered by smoke are more likely on deck. Concentrate on having fun, and you probably won't notice any smoke at all. Have a great cruise!:)

It really depends on how heavy your neighbors smoke. The theory that the moving ship blows it away is not accurate. Ever spit out your driver's side window with all the windows down? Where does it go? Yep...right in the back window. The same happens on a moving ship.

If you are unfortunate enough to have heavy, chain smokers next to you, you will most certainly smell it.

Not true at all. I have been bothered by it on every cruise where I have had a balcony (four). Unless you have a poor sense of smell, you likely will notice it if someone nearby is smoking (unless the wind happens to be blowing the smoke in the opposite direction of you and that person). I would not book a balcony again on a cruise line that permitted smoking on balconies.

Hi Gonzo. I see you cruised the Equinox, and are trying it again. I am doing the same with Solstice. They are fantastic ships and, in keeping on topic, prohibit balcony smoking.

If only that were true :(

We've had smokers above, below and on either side and the smoke always seems to come and linger on the balcony, even when at sea.

Our Med cruise, the first few nights we loved having the balcony doors open all night (no worries, no air conditioning needed in October). Then we were awakened by the smell of cigarette smoke from the cabin below us. Not only did it come right into the cabin, the smell stayed all night, we were both miserable by morning even after closing the door, spraying air freshener and waving towels around the room to dissipate the odor. The woman started every morning and finished every evening on her balcony smoking up a storm.

I'll add we never say anything because we understand these people are within their rights.

Having smoking - non/smoking cabins will never work for cruise ships. It would be just like hotels, even the smokers book non-smoking rooms so they don't have to live in the old cigarette stench. They need to be able to sell all cabins (almost, there are exceptions) to anyone.

The posts here are hysterical:D

I used to be a smoker and found out it did not matter where I was, someone complained:).

First, I was a polite smoker, if I was near someone who did not like the smell, I would gladly move away to stop from bothering them.

Last cruise I went on when I was a smoker, had a partially uncovered balcony midship on a lower deck. Anytime I went outside to light up, some "person" from way up FORWARD and 4 decks higher would start yelling for me to stop. Heaven forbid I say something to them, probably been thrown off the ship:eek:.

Meanwhile, on the balcony next door, this lady would wear this perfume (think she bathed in it) that would make me physically sick. Heaven forbid I said something to her..LOL I would be thrown off the ship.

I for one can say, that a major reason why I smoked (aside from enjoyment) was to DROWN out the smell of that insecticide perfume.

Ladies think about that before you knock a smoker:cool:

(waiting for the flaming to begin;))
