'Dream' missed Roatan today 3/9/10

Is it more money to the cruise line if they don't dock. The casinos are open the bar is open the shops are open Could there be a monetary reason not to dock i.e. our bar take is down we need to get these people drinking?

Wow, no kidding - not even an OBC? Hmmmm - Carnival needs to be listening to us here on the forums.

 

I know, personally, we are most excited about going to Roatan on our sailing in May and will not be happy if they miss it. Of course I'll get over it quickly, but still, Carnival SHOULD at least be giving us OBC when this happens.

We will also be on the Dream on May 15th. and we are looking forward to seeing Roatan. We haven't booked shore excursion as of today but I do want to see one of the beaches. Checking for the best beach on the boards now.

Navigating in to Mahogany Bay is NOT easy (read John Heald's blog today) - there are two ship wrecks in there. Wind and water conditions must be considered........

 

As for $$ made or lost - Carnival not only owns the ship, it owns Mahogany Bay - so whether you spend your jingle onshore or on board, the company is making out. Yes - you can book w/ independent operators, but they have made it just a bit more difficult at MB by restricting those operators from sending transportation into the MB complex.

I was embarrassed just watching this....How stupid. They missed a port...big donkey deal! I would be disappointed but I wouldn't cause a stir!

If we miss that port (or any ports) while sailing the Legend in December, I'm guessing DH will be disappointed for about 10 seconds...then he'll say "Let's go be romantic in the cabin!" :D :rolleyes:

Yeah right.:( Been there, done that (Glory skipped it in Jan. due to "rough seas"). They don't give you squat, except an earful about "how fortunate you are that the captain made a brave decision".

 

We had nearly the identical speech on the Valor in early February about missing Mahogany Bay due to high winds. :D We were able to dock in Coxen Hole. Our plans went from free beach day to a pay resort island at Maya Cay. The manager there told us that ships are redirected or cancelled in Mahogany Bay alot due to high winds. She wasn't unhappy about the extra business, and we had a lovely time at Maya Cay. Highly recommended!

You'd think, but we were told by several different Carnival employees that we could not pay to take a taxi to Mahogany Bay Beach (my DS really wanted to do the chair lift) the day we were redirected to Coxen Hole due to high winds. I did think this strange for exactly what you posted. You'd think Carnival would want our money onshore!

Given Carnival's recent track record on wrecking their ships at the dock, I would not question this decision at all.

 

Making a port is not worth putting a hole in the hull and perhaps killing people.

... and I have no doubt that MISSING A PORT will become a more frequent event. Captains must be feeling additional pressure to play it safe -- much better to not take a chance (have a sea day) and keep their job! :eek:

We couldn't dock in Mahogany Bay last week either on the Valor. I forget the reason they gave...wind or seas it seems like. We went down to Coxen Hole instead though. They did say that none of the facilities (including the beach) at Mahogany Bay would be available since we were not docking there.

Maybe that decision is based on numbers - "some" may still want to go back to MB, but the cost of staffing the entire complex may not be justified by the reduced number of customers. Just a guess. If they don't even go to Coxen, then all the money goes to Carnival.

 

BTW - the chair lift cost is now $8, instead of the $5 as often posted. I think I read it was a six minute ride for $8. Oh well - we spend it, one way or the other!!!

I believe the $20 per person is if you miss the port entirely, otherwise if you miss Mahogany Bay but dock instead at Coxen Hole like we did last week, you will find a credit on your SS account of about $4.89.

So sorry to hear, that was my favorite port. I can imagine there are many that are not too happy. They better start dishing out some free drinks or something quick.

I believe they are working with the government to improve the docking facilities there.
