Has anyone ever cruised by an island that had an active volcano that you could see? Where?

We did a night-time sail-by the Kiluea volcano on the big island, Hawaii. We were about 2 miles off shore and could see the bright red flows of lava streaming down the side into the ocean and could smell the strong odor of sulfur.

There is a dormant volcano near Sitka, Alaska, Mt. Edgecombe. It looks impressive in May when there is still a fair amount of snow on it.

We sailed past Spamoni (sp?) a volcanic island between Italy and Sicily in the evening while it was erupting. it was a beautiful sight.

We too sailed past Kiluea volcano on the Big Island in Hawaii.

We sailed from Antigua one evening, and the captain said we'd be passing Montserrat at 9pm. We were the only ones on deck watching in the dark, and we saw the volcano erupt 3 times. It was full moon, which some scientists think draws the lava.

If you are on a cruise which sails between the Straits of Messina- Italy and Sicily- you should see at least smoke from Stromboli, known as the lighthouse of the Med, which erupts every 1/2 hour or so. You'll pass Etna in the Straits- fairly active, but I've only seen smoke from fissures.

Santorini's volcano can be climbed- a hot, dry, shadeless experience, but you may glimpse vapours.

Lanzarote, Canary Islands, is still cooking away, and you can eat a steak grilled over a crater, tho' it's not erupting at present.

And don't forget Iceland....

Some Southern Caribbean routes will cruise past Montserrat... if your ship is close enough, you can see the lava glow in the dark when it is active (it has been active for quite some time now).

I saw someone had a really good pic of the volcano on Montserrat. In one of the pic threads, they took it from a helicopter on a tour. I might have to check into that.

Friends took the helicopter flight from Antigua, and loved it. Did I hear that there's now a ferry across which tied in with a trip?

We're planning on Iceland next, to see the rift of the continental plates. There's often a trip out to Heymey, and past the new volcanic island of Surtsey.
