tobeyjc Posted July 16, 2010 #1 Share Posted July 16, 2010 Hello to all expert on cruising, this is our first time,we're cruising on Aug 1st, my question is do they put a hold on your credit card for deposit just like in hotel they ask for deposit and when you check out they release the hold, and if they do usually how much? Thanks.
Cruising89143 Posted July 16, 2010 #2 Share Posted July 16, 2010 At check in they will swipe your credit card. How much of a hold do they place? Not really sure. You will get many different answers on this board. Best to ask the check in agent.
cruisdog Posted July 16, 2010 #3 Share Posted July 16, 2010 They put a hold on $200, we noticed this the last time we sailed. Robert
sjb317 Posted July 16, 2010 #4 Share Posted July 16, 2010 We always use our BOA card and I have never noticed a hold put on it. I usually check our account the day we get home so if there is a hold, it is off by then. Sherri:)
ERIE 13 Posted July 16, 2010 #5 Share Posted July 16, 2010 I always bring more than one credit card. One for Royal which is there Visa card and one I use at the ports of call that does not charge extra for purchases. Vat tax.
cb at sea Posted July 16, 2010 #6 Share Posted July 16, 2010 We've never noticed a "hold"...we do make sure to tell our credit card companies that we will be out of the country, so they don't put their own "hold" on our accounts, thinking they may have been stolen! We use 1 card for our shipboard account, and that credit card NEVER goes ashore with us....we take a 2nd card for onshore purchases....that way, should that card get "misplaced or stolen" (not likely, but still...) our ship account isn't compromised! If you use a debit card, they WILL place a hold....
Mydnite Posted July 16, 2010 #7 Share Posted July 16, 2010 On Jewel we used a debit card and ended up with more than $1,000 wioh a hold on it, which was NOT released after they authorised and took all funds needed to clear the account on a seperate transaction. Lesson may be to use a creidt card, not sure if it is different, according to RCL when we spoke to them is that it does not make any difference any more and the treatment will be the same. (But soeak to different RCL popele and you wqill get different answers). We have had different experiences on different ships, so while this is not meant to make a difference, I wonder if it does. cruiseguy1016 Posted July 16, 2010 #8 Share Posted July 16, 2010 We use our RCI Visa for our on board account and we have never seen a hold place on the account.
MikeBayAreaCa Posted July 16, 2010 #9 Share Posted July 16, 2010 Never noticed a hold. We always have on board credit from using our RC credit card so never end up owing anything. Last year we had $650.00 of credit and ended the cruise with 10 cents left. We used it for tips, wine, and shopping on board. You can also use it for excursions. With the RC card you also get double points for anything you purchase through RC. We just make sure we pay off the card in full each month. Crusing again next June and hoping to have about the same amount of credit.
Desert Cruizers Posted July 16, 2010 #10 Share Posted July 16, 2010 We have never had a hold on a Credit card, yet I like the suggestion of 1 Card for Ship expenses and 1 for Port expenses. You may at anytime once on board, change to another card, then the one set up during your Online Check in.
Tyler80 Posted July 17, 2010 #11 Share Posted July 17, 2010 I use my Bank of America Royal Caribbean Visa card for all cruises and have never noticed a hold on it.
travelbug11 Posted July 17, 2010 #12 Share Posted July 17, 2010 I've noticed temporary charges while I've been on the ship for 12-14 day cruises. But, by the time I got home, they were dropped and the only charage was for my total bill.
romnan Posted July 17, 2010 #13 Share Posted July 17, 2010 I have always used my American Express card which technically is not a credit card. So I guess I would be curious how that is view I think it is looked as Cash and I am beholding to AX:confused:
