The Almost Complete Food Lovers Guide to the Oasis of the Seas

Recommended Posts

(Hi Brian!).

Hi SensFan11. ;) I just emailed your wife with those restaurant recommendations. :)

Great thoughts, thanks for chiming in. While Park Cafe is definitely busy Day 1, it still generally works out. If you're on early, you can go directly there. It's a lovely place to relax after getting on board. Later on it will be more crowded, but no big deal.

With the kids I would recommend going to Park Cafe right away and relaxing a bit. Then head up to the sports deck and go to the Wipeout Cafe and let the kids grab anything they want. They'll love that! And they'll love checking out the sports deck with the zip line, Flowriders and mini golf!

We were all very tired, but the girls also just couldn't sit still...and I should mention they're both very accustom to restaurants - we took them to the main dining room every night.

Thanks so much for the reply....all of the kids (our two and my niece and nephew) are all very accustomed to restaurants as well, so it is nice to hear that even those that go frequently wouldn't LOVE to just sit at a place like that just after getting on board. :p I think we will see where the crowds go and just head to one of the other two that day.... Thanks again to you and Brian. :)

As I say above, we will head to one of the three (JR, Wipeout or Park) depending on the crowds. ;) I assume we will end up on the sports desk soon after we board.....I can see my almost two year old (he actually turns two while cruising) disrupting all of our golf games (love him for it...well maybe not our other kids). :p:) Thanks again.

BTW, not sure if you're aware, but there's also a separate, adjacent mini golf course for young kids (at least there was on Allure)...bigger balls, larger cups. Probably more for 4-5 year olds, but your two year old may enjoy chasing the balls around there.

Hahaha. Yeah, I just might have to do that. Or maybe I'll just book Harmony and do it all over again! :D

Hi Brian - Ginger here....since I'm doing Oasis next February and Harmony the following February...maybe you can cruise Oasis again within the next few months and of course do Harmony before I sail her too. I know it would be a burden, but you could take one for the team, right?!? After all, a girl has to know where to eat when on board ;)

Hey, Brian - sounds like you are going to HAVE to cruise at least one of the Oasis class ships again to update your guide!:D

I have always said Royal Caribbean should give you a free cruise for all the amazing PR you provided. How do we start a petition?:p

Oh, and I love good food, and DH Paul was an executive chef, so we'd be great assistants!;)

The Almost Complete Food Lovers Guide to the Oasis of the Seas

Part 1: Day 1 Lunch at Park Café

Here is my almost complete guide to the food on the Oasis of the Seas. Why is it ALMOST complete? Well, there are a few places that I never ate on the ship. Most notably, I never ate in the Main Dining Room and I never ate at Windjammer. However, I did ENTER both places, so I can tell you what they look like. J But that’s about it.

Another place I never ate was the Seafood Shack. I love seafood, but I try to stay away from the fried stuff and previous reviews were mixed. Also, my only opportunity to eat here would have been lunch. I try to eat lighter meals for lunch. I’m sure I’m not always successful, but I do try. I did try because I knew that my dinners were generally going to be eating fests. And I have to say that on the Oasis this was the case.

First, a disclaimer, I do not claim to be a FOODIE, perhaps an amateur foodie at best. I know a decent amount about food. I do some cooking for my family. I have eaten at some of the finest restaurants, especially in New York City, which is 16 miles from my house and where I work every weekday. I know what I like and I seek out good food. There aren’t many things I won’t eat, but one of them is cheese. I will eat some mild cheeses, but I hate American cheese. I don’t like dairy products in general and I’m a little lactose intolerant. However, that doesn’t stop me from eating ice cream. Sorry, I love the stuff.

Why did I include this disclaimer? Because reviews are subjective to our own experiences. If I walk into a cheese shop, I may not be happy, but you may be in heaven. So take this review as a guide, I even called it a guide. As I read reviews before my cruise, I was able to pick out the information I knew was valuable to ME. Everyone has their own idea of a, “perfect cruise.” I know yours is different from mine. But here is a slice of mine, mostly the eating part, but other information also, and I hope you enjoy it.

On Day 1 we boarded the ship at 11:15 and took a quick tour of the Promenade, Boardwalk and then headed to Central Park. I told my Roll Call that I’d be at the Park Café in Central Park eating a roast beef sandwich around noon and that any that would like to join me should do so. Two people did, Brad and Erica, and two others were there but didn’t recognize me, Rachelle and Jackie.

So, how was this famed roast beef sandwich? Well, it was good! I love sandwiches. I could eat sandwiches all the time. I probably eat sandwiches too often. I have a turkey sandwich at least three times a week for lunch, but NOT on this cruise. J Sorry, back to the roast beef. Yes, it was good. It was not GREAT. It was good. I enjoyed it and I recommend it. It was a perfect lunch. They also give you a bag of chips of your choice. I had the Sun Chips. I had it with the horseradish. I like horseradish, but I like mustard more. However, it was yellow mustard, not a spicy mustard that I prefer. Later in the week I had it with mustard and I liked that better than the horseradish, though either way was fine for me. By the way, I dislike ketchup. My wife LOVED the flavored waters here and generally speaking, all the food was very good. I’ll get to breakfast here later in the week.

Not a bad pic of the roast beef sandwich with horseradish.

Brian's review was fantastic....if it doesn't meet your needs right off the bat based on his description, at least you know to stop reading now. However, for those people that were interested in other options that were available, this was a FANTASTIC review and appreciated by many. And it is still being talked about and utilized five years later....I'd consider that a success :)

Why would you think this thread is a joke?

More than 5 years after the fact, with over 190,000 views, I think you're quite missing the point.

  • This was the first Royal Caribbean ship with so many restaurants and bars that you just about couldn't visit all on a one week cruise. This review by a self-proclaimed 'amateur foodie at best' with a disclaimer that reviews and food experiences are subjective was EXTRAORDINARILY helpful to myself (and hundreds, probably thousands, of cruisers) at a time that there was very little information about these venues available. How else would I have known how much more enjoyable it was going to be to relax in Central Park on boarding day with my Park Cafe lunch while the 'masses' fought for a seat in the same old Windjammer - at least until they finally discovered the Cafe and it became packed?
  • If, as you say, 99% of all passengers ate in the MDR and WJ all the time, Royal Caribbean would have closed these other restaurants down a long time ago. Obviously, they have been successful enough to refurbish older ships to include them. Previous to this review there were plenty of reviews of the MDR and Windjammer - why rehash the known entities when there was so much more to explore?
  • As Buffett Fan stated, even taking into account all the dining changes on the Oasis since this was written, it is still appreciated and HELPFUL to many others sailing this ship.
  • Sorry if I'm ranting and rambling, but your post seems unnecessarily rude, and makes ME SMH.

I suggest you take the time to do a review of the MDR food, and when somone questions why you didn't go to the other venues lets see how it makes you feel.

FYI: If you are interested in reading a food review of Oasis MDR here is a link to a great review. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1813591&highlight=food+porn

Perhaps between both reviews it will cover most of your needs.

This is what I don't get. There's something for everyone. If this doesn't fit your needs, just move on. *shrug*

It took me a minute to find that review. I remember it from years ago due to the quality of it. Some would rather complain, than look for what they need. For an individual to shake their head over a food review it only makes more people shake their heads at that individual's reaction.

Over the years, I have gotten to the point that I don't respond to the negative (I'm old and actually had to google SMH), but I wanted to take this opportunity to mention that when this thread first started, I printed out all the posts and then spent evenings highlighting all the different foods/drinks to try for our 2011 Oasis cruise.

When we did our 2013 Oasis b2b - I went back through all the posts one more time - I also appreciated the MDR food thread as it really came in handy - the first week we went to the dining room every night - the second week it was specialty restaurants.

These reviews are why I keep posting/reading these boards .... I gain so much valuable information and enjoying reading and getting through the cold Maine winters while waiting for my next adventure. Thank you for taking us along!! :) Jan
