MARYKAY ~ "Hi!"' date=' btw. What month in 2006 were you on the Sun? I just realized we may have sailed together ... we were on her in April, 17 days from Miami to SF.[/font']

We really love the Sun. Why? 1) The best crew! 2) Pacific Heights. 3) Il Adagio. 4) Smaller ship.

Can't wait for our 26 days on her in just a month's time (with MaryKay and her Joe) YAY!!!!

Well, fancy meeting you here. :) We were on the Sun 4/23-5/10/06 from Miami to SF, so sounds as if we were on the same cruise! What a small world! I didn't know about CC at the time so wasn't on this board.

There was a chaplain on board who not only held some very nice interdenominational services but also had an informal vow renewal that, along with about 10 other couples, we took part in, just a few months after our 17th wedding anniversary. A really nice way to celebrate.

I loved the fact it was a smaller NCL ship. I liked the outside bow area at the top, accessible from the Spinnaker observation lounge. I'm looking forward to spending some time out there taking photos on our upcoming cruise(s).

I remember the most delicious mussels in broth that we had in Pacific Heights. We also had breakfast one morning in Las Ramblas. I had to doublecheck my journal recently to see if my memory was accurate since no one has mentioned Las Ramblas as an option for breakfast, but we did indeed have made-to-order omelets there. I hope they still do that.

We spent hours in the Sports Lounge not only enjoying the view, but also playing cards. Somehow I didn't realize I could have gotten food there but I now know it for this next cruise.

And I spent lots of hours on deck in The Great Outdoors, one of my favorite places. I ate several lunches there. The hamburgers were delicious.

There were movies and lectures that I enjoyed but I don't know if, with NCL's cutbacks, there will be those options this time on our sea days. I sure hope so. Joe played Team Trivia every day -- we've got NCL bookmarks and decks of cards to prove it. :)

I can hardly wait to board and meet the 'gang'. The time is getting closer!!

I've been on the Sun twice. There is one major thing I don't like about the Sun: I'm not on it RIGHT NOW!

I prefer the MDR at the stern of the ship, rather than the one at midship, just for the ambiance. I loved LeBistro; didn't try the other specialty restaraunts on those trips. (Tried them on the Pearl; liked most of them, most of the time.) Buffet is okay; chocolate buffet was better on our first cruise than either of the other two. I like the main theater and Bliss better on the Sun than their counterparts on the Pearl, but otherwise like the Pearl slightly more than the Sun, though that probably relates more to the way we cruised them than the ships themselves.

i feel the same about cruising in general well on NCL i dont like that i am NOT ON AN NCL CRUISE NOW to ANYWHERE:D.....

our favorite was the STAR well not since they changed the Blue Lagoon and Spinnakers i am sure, but maybe the SUN will become our new favorite~~NEW MEMORIES of GOOD TIMES:)

It's on the port side at the stern - on our South American cruise, we ordered wings and beer and then enjoyed them just outside in The Great Outdoors.

so that is the Sports Bar everyone talks about where you can get BLUE-LAGOON like food?

The Blue Lagoon on other NCL ships serves breakfast and lunch as well as snacks like wings and is open close to 23 hours a day. However, the Sports Bar doesn't serve any meals and I think their 'snack' service is only from early evening, like 5:30pm, onwards.

The Sports bar is open late however past midnight. So its a good place to snack on something before going to bed...

Its not quite a Blue Lagoon, but it suffices... I keep hoping NCL will turn the Sports bar into a Blue Lagoon in her next dry dock along with turning East Meets West into a Cagneys...

The Sun was built before newer ships introduced both of these popular restaurants...

me too, it was built just before..It and the Star were in the water within a few weeks of each other, but the Star was built from scratch and the Sun pruchased after it the building started.

Just off the Sun today and I would agree with most of the comments you have read so far. We had an AD on deck 8, just below the bridge, and the cabin was great with a full bathroom. However it was at the front so the view from the balcony was restricted unless you stood up but it did give some fantastic views when leaving and entering ports.

We had breakfast and lunch in Il Adagio, definitely the best restaurant for ambience we thought. Dinner menu (3 times) is fine but we did not like the pizza. East meets West steakhouse (twice) good but we thought the filet mignon was better in Le Bistro (3 times). Teppanyaki fun but only worth doing once. We liked the Pacific heights (twice), never busy and, for us, an interesting menu. Only ate in an MDR once, food and service good although the dressing on shrimp cocktail was watery. It was most memorable because the evening we ate there the wind got up and the captain turned the ship quickly so there was a definite list and you could see the sea was much nearer on the other side as the restaurant is on deck 5. A lot of people left and did not return, a pity as the roast sirloin was excellent!

We only went to a few shows and enjoyed them. The casino is a bit smoky but was rarely busy. I liked the Sports bar and the wings, my wife liked Las Ramblas and the tapas. The Windjammer bar was cosy in the evening. Will be writing a fuller review and posting the dailies when I get time but I would not hesitate in sailing on the Sun again.

Thanks for the quick run down, I really am looking forward to reading your review. Good to know about the restaurants. I think we'll be doing the MDR most of the time, but what was the menu like in Pacific Heights? I realize its a lighter healthier menu but what were some of the offerings?

Actually I have trouble understanding what is more healthy with the meals, but I guess they are. Last time we ate there my favorite appitizer was the mussels. If they still have them, they are a meal in themselves. You will also find pork chops, fish, chicken, the desserts are sugar free or light. The same with the dressings. Basically they are just enough healthier that you leave full but feel good about watching what you eat.

Heck, I always watch what I eat, every bite I watch it go down and say, just one more bite.

There is no Cagney's on the Sun. Do you have it mixed up with one of the other NCL ships such as the Jewel?

I agree with you about the Great Outdoors Cafe. I loved to eat out there, especially the hamburgers at lunch time.

I'll be on the cruise with the OP.

I just looked at the layout of the Sports Deck restaurant area. It looks like they may have changed it around in the last drydock? I don't remember the Ginza sushi area being there in 08', I thought that was Cagney's! I just remember the Sushi Bar being there... Oh Well, I had some great steaks on the Sun and on the Jewel. Enjoy!!!!

hubby will like that he can still get some wings...

thanks for posting about the eateries--we usually find more than enough to eat without trying all the others...but we are on her for 2 weeks so we just might have to!

looking forward to your review!

The current deck plan on ncl.com shows how the ship has been for as long as I have been sailing her, with one exception: it has got the Ginza and East Meets West labels the wrong way round. East Meets West is the steakhouse (although it still bears the name it was given when it was originally a fusion restaurant).

We're sailing on the Sun in September and would really like an opportunity to see the dailies and read your review before we go - Thanks!!!

I just got home Sunday night from the Sun. Great trip.

re: Cagney's - it is the East Meets West and somewhat shares the space w/ the sushi bar. Very nicely done. The jazz brunch on our last sea day was there and was our best meal of the cruise. So much better than the jazz brunch on the Star last year.

I don't recall seeing turkey burgers at the grill, but I was usually just there getting iced tea and scoping out the cookie selection!

The entertainment is hard for me to comment on since we usually spent the evenings i the casino or dancing. Also, we were travelling with friends so we spent a lot of time chatting out on the deck watching the sunsets.

The two shows we saw were the Cirque something, which I did not care for at all. The acrobatics were pitiful, the costuming odd and the music just so-so. The actors were fine, though, consisdering what they had to work with. The other was a Celtic flutist who was fabulous.

Plan to do a comprehensive review when I figure out what time it is ;)
