Drydocking/refurbishing

Recommended Posts

Adventure was just in dry dock in April of last year (2009).

Thanks! We're going with friends who are first time cruisers and we've sailed AOS before and wwe keep bragging about what a beauty she is and I don't want them to be disappointed..

If they get "Major" upgrades - I doubt it will be before our cruise next Feb. That would take too long and they are already booking for every time before then.

You would be amazed at how fast they can turn around "major upgrades". I would expect it to last at least 1 week and no more than 3 weeks.

Ships are required to be inspected in drydock every 5 or 2.5 years depending on the age of the hull, per a RCCL ship manager I enjoyed dinner with a few months ago. Ergo, Oasis and Allure would be scheduled for something about 5 years after launched.

Note that a drydock does not have to equal a major overhaul or even the addition of any "features". Enchantment was in drydock in Norfolk, VA this year there was very little outward evidence of the procedure once she came out. Of course if the line is planning to make any siginificant changes to a ship, a drydock would be the logical time to do it, just don't presume that because a ship is going into drydock that it means it will be "different" when it comes out. In some cases any changes that are visible to passengers are subtle.

True! Many people are under the misconception that "Drydock" means "Major Overhaul - Refurbishing"

You don't need to drydock to do that. You do need to drydock to shut down the powerplants for needed maintenance, hull cleaning and inspection, intakes, etc.

These ships are running 24/7, months if not years at a time, and need looking after.

Think of running your car non-stop like that. Sooner or later it will have to go into the shop for a oil change, tune up, etc, to keep it running efficiently. (and safely)

You're not going to get new seats or sound system, carpet, etc every time you take it to the dealer.
