Transport from Venice airport to port?

How far is the Venice airport from the port? We will be taking Oceania's "Grecian Glory" cruise in May. The ship tranfers are $258, and I'm thinking a taxi has to be much more economical than that. Can anyone tell me what the best way to get to the ship would be, and the cost, considering we will have luggage?

Thanks!

A taxi is a better price

I think the trip is less than 30 minutes or you can take the bus for 3E pp to P Roma then either the vaporetto or land taxi to the ship depending on where the ship is docked

A water taxi is also an option $$$

Perhaps eight miles? I believe a taxi would cost about 40 Euros. You also can take a bus from the airport to the bus station for 4 or 5 Euros per person and then a taxi from there for 10 (or 15? I forget) Euros (a short way but a monopoly). We did so in late April this year but took the bus day one (and then the vaporetto to our hotel) and the taxi day three (after a vaporetto ride from our hotel) with our lovely return stay in Venice in between the two:)!

Actually, the bus is even easier than that...We took it from Venice to the Airport last time we were there...It was included as FREE with the 24 hour or 72 hour Vaporetti pass--which, if one is spending any time in Venice is a must anyway...

The bus was very roomy and set up with luggage areas to easily accommodate a lot of luggage...the ride was fairly fast and easy...

The only real issue is in getting to the bus...We stayed near Piazza San Marco, so we took the #1 Vaparetto down the Grand Canal to Piazzale Roma...

BUT, if you are going directly to the ship (a shame not to spend at least a couple of days in Venice, what you would do is take the bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma and either a very cheap cab ride or a free shuttle from there to the ship...

An easier way to get directly from airport to ship is on the Alilaguna:

http://goeurope.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=goeurope&cdn=travel&tm=41&gps=505_260_1259_821&f=00&su=p531.51.336.ip_&tt=2&bt=0&bts=0&zu=http%3A//www.alilaguna.it/lineablu.html

€15,00 per person for a boat ride from airport to cruise port...

Or you could hire a private taxi or water taxi...

http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/venice-taxis.htm

A shared water taxi will cost €27,00-30,00 per person:

Good luck...

Bruin Steve:

Thank you for your extremely helpful post.

Nautica will be docked at San Bassilio at the end of October, not Marittima. There appears to be an Allaguna stop at San Bassilio using the R or B routes directly from the airport without even having to switch to the M. Do you (or anyone else) know if the Allaguna dock is within walking distance of where the ships are? Considering luggage.

I was planning to take the bus and a taxi (or shuttle, if available) from P. Roma, but arriving by boat sure has a lot of charm.

Thanks,

Marilyn

I have not been there but according to the Alilaguna website there is a stop at Zattere which is still a bit of a walk from S. Basilio but not a really long hike as recall from previous research

You can get an idea of the location from this map

I am sure someone will have the answer for you

It takes 30 minutes with a Water Taxi from San Marco, witch is the most expencive way to go, for about 40 euros, or you can take the Vaporetto, it will take 45 minutes but it will only set you back 15 euros. Dipends where you are staying you may have to walk to get on, but on arrivel it's only a short walk to the Airport Terminal.

We disembarked at Venice an went to the airport via a private car service I found on line. The guy picked us up in a new Mercedes at San Basillio(sp?) at a mere fraction of the cost that Oceania was charging. San Basillio has access to autos so yu do not need to take a water taxi or vaporetto to leave.

CORRECT. You want a land taxi or car service. San Basilio is accessable by car. On the other hand, Alilaguna would leave you at Zattere which (on average) would be 1000 yards from the ship and you would have 2 bridges. As far as I know, this is a picture of one of them ( from Panoramio)

My understanding from Alilaguna's website is that there isn't a stop at San Basilio. A shared water taxi would be the easier way to arrive by boat. Otherwise you would have to take Alilaguna to San Marco and then switch to one of the Vaporetto routes.

Thanks Earl. That's what I was trying to figure out. I can see that the stop at Zattere was too far. The stop I was looking at is the one for the Hilton, but that may be on the opposite side of the water. I understand my options now.

As far as I know, alilaguna doesn't go to the cruise terminal from the airport. It goes to Tronchetto which is the parking Island and a fair hike from the cruise port. Easiest way is a land taxi all the way. Least expensive way is the express bus to Piazzal Roma followed by a taxi or the new People Mover to the port. see http://www.veniceforvisitors.com

Last year we used the following :

a) Buy 3 day vaporretto pass (x2) + 2 "blue "direct bus tickets to Piazza de Roma at Venice airport . Used elbows to get on bus. ~60 Euro

b) Dropped of heavy suitcase at left luggage at Piazza de Roma for 3 Days .~10 Euro

c) Started usage of Vaparreto pass by using punch machine at entry to Vaparetto pier

d) Took Vaparetto to our Hotel

e) On boarding day Vaparetto to Piazza de Roma, Pick up Suitcase, Take taxi to S. Basilio (5 Minutes / 15 Euro)
