capsfan24 Posted August 28, 2010 #1 Share Posted August 28, 2010 Why does everyone say people shouldn't wear flip flops on deck? I would assume traction reasons. My wife wears flip flops all the time and I told her she might want to wear shoes on deck but she just says whatever

joepeka Posted August 28, 2010 #3 Share Posted August 28, 2010 DH and I always wear flip flops on deck. Never had a problem. Same here.... the ceramic tile in our kitchen however is another matter if your flip-flops are wet. ;)
Grandma58 Posted August 28, 2010 #4 Share Posted August 28, 2010 I wear flip flops all the time. Sister was wearing regular shoes and took a spill once...
TahoeBob Posted August 28, 2010 #5 Share Posted August 28, 2010 Why does everyone say people shouldn't wear flip flops on deck? I would assume traction reasons. My wife wears flip flops all the time and I told her she might want to wear shoes on deck but she just says whatever I have been on 5 cruises to date and on CC for 6 years. I really don't remember anyone ever saying something like that, I know I have never said that , so your statement is incorrect. Not to say no one ever has said that, but I think the correct term is a few people.
afcj1 Posted August 28, 2010 #6 Share Posted August 28, 2010 Well, the deck does get slippery. I've managed to catch myself twice and I was being careful. I've also seen others slip. If the deck is dry, then no problem, but a little bit wet or around the pool, be careful.
Gairy Fodmother Posted August 28, 2010 #7 Share Posted August 28, 2010 Aquaplaning would be my guess.
astropilot Posted August 28, 2010 #8 Share Posted August 28, 2010 Also it's easy to catch the front of the flip flop on the edge of the stairs on the outside decks. How do I know? Been there, done that, have the scars to prove it LOL :D I don't wear them on ships anymore...
LemurCat Posted August 28, 2010 #9 Share Posted August 28, 2010 Some folks have had trouble with flipflops on deck. A lot of others don't. I personally have never had an issue. My suggestion is to invest in good flipflops with decent traction on the soles and watch your step on the stairs.
Rare shof515 Posted August 28, 2010 #10 Share Posted August 28, 2010 Crocs is overall better then regular flip flops :D
anamanxs Posted August 28, 2010 #11 Share Posted August 28, 2010 I took a royal fall in Teva's but they were worn on the bottom; just make sure they have tread on the bottom. And the drinks are even slippier than the water. People spill!
LemurCat Posted August 28, 2010 #12 Share Posted August 28, 2010 Crocs is overall better then regular flip flops :D Some of the worst slips on wet floors I've ever seen were by people wearing Crocs. That, and I find them aesthetically displeasing. But hey, if they work for you, go for it!
Rosefloater Posted August 28, 2010 #13 Share Posted August 28, 2010 Well, the deck does get slippery. I've managed to catch myself twice and I was being careful. I've also seen others slip. If the deck is dry, then no problem, but a little bit wet or around the pool, be careful. I slipped really bad at the beginning of the line in the buffet where the hand sanitizers are. People shake the excess stuff on the floor and makes it extremely slippery. I was wearing Merrell thongs at the time.
janina Posted August 28, 2010 #14 Share Posted August 28, 2010 I'd never go without my flip flops....and I've never had any problems walking along the decks.:)
ksat Posted August 28, 2010 #15 Share Posted August 28, 2010 We both wear Sole Brand flip flops on our cruises and they have not slipped. I did slip and fall on another cruise wearing just a regular pair of flip flops. It was very scary as I had had a broken tibia and have steel rods in my leg. I am very careful on wet decks. CalmCruiserNC Posted August 28, 2010 #16 Share Posted August 28, 2010 In the world of dangerous shoes aboard a moving ship, you'd think that stillettoes would be the ones to really worry about!
cb at sea Posted August 28, 2010 #17 Share Posted August 28, 2010 Flip-flops are the standard footwear on ships, at beaches, at pools...everywhere. Wear them. Enjoy them!
DocF Posted August 28, 2010 #18 Share Posted August 28, 2010 I had to replace my older pair of Topsider flip flops as the toe strap finally failed on one. Rotten lousy things only lat 18 years of almost constant wear. I carry two pairs of Topsider flip flops on cruises. The have deck shoe soles and are as close to slip proof as one can get. DW has some flip flops that are lethal. Hard, slick soles and wet decks are not a good combination. We did get her a pair yesterday that have very sticky poly urethane soles and they should be great on board. Doc

joeandaimeesmom Posted August 28, 2010 #20 Share Posted August 28, 2010 I ws on a group cruise once and before we even left the dock someone in our group that had flip flops on almost did a split and ended up breaking her ankle.. Just be careful wearing them..:)
RBCL Posted August 28, 2010 #21 Share Posted August 28, 2010 Never had a problem. Almost slipped by the pool, but that's just the water -- like another PP stated, be careful not to slip on the water spilt out of the pool. :) ;)
vacruizer Posted August 28, 2010 #22 Share Posted August 28, 2010 There's a big difference between a good flip-flop like a Nike or Teva or Adidas and the 1.99 Old Navy or Walmart rubber "shower shoes" type. The cheapie rubber ones get incredibly slippery at times along with some of the dressy sandal type a lot of ladies wear. I love my flip flops and live in them in the summers. Nike are my favorite - I think I have about 5 pair and swear I could run in them. I wear them everywhere in the summer and no issues with slipping or comfort. I've never slipped on deck in my good flip flops but have seen others go down - usually wearing either the rubber things or some sort of dress or high heeled type sandal. jeshghn Posted August 28, 2010 #25 Share Posted August 28, 2010 I did a gold medal worth pirouette while hydroplaning in flip-flops on a walk on deck after the rain. Very embarrassing and resulted in a sprained wrist. :o Didn’t ruin my day or my cruise! But now have invested in a good pair of flip-flops with decent tread, they are Croc flip-flops which are much nicer then the originals and very comfy!
