smoking policy

Mad at NCL? Why? Nobody pressgangs you to sail NCL. It's no good complaining about their policies that's the way it is. No point getting mad at smokers either, so long as they smoke where it's allowed.

What a logical statement.

I don't like smoke either but I choose to sail NCL. So, even if I am perturbed (at times), I have been forewarned. So, I keep my thoughts to myself.

People seem to lump all smokers in one category... but I find most really are considerate of non-smokers. I have only seen my SIL smoke once or twice in 10 years. She quietly excuses herself from the group and goes off alone.

Also, it is sometimes in the way non-smokers act. I find it is better to kindly ask someone in the casino, (at slots) if they would move their ashtray to the other side, they gladly do. But I have seen people wave their arms, or hold their noses with their fingers, this does not illicit a positive result IMHO.

We all gotta live together.

Well we just need to take action, contact your congress person today and demand that all cruise ships that use a USA port must be non smoking, were getting it done with restaurants and bars nationwide, we can get it done here as well, smokers are evil.

Have fun with that, LOL.

Smokers are not evil. SOME smokers are inconsiderate, but so are chair hogs and people at the buffet who have apparently not eaten in three months. I personally hate the smell of smoke and would be extremely unhappy to be downwind of a smoking cabin, but I wouldn't go so far as to call smokers "evil."

It's a little tough to regulate a ship that is not registered in America. But, good luck with your little plan.

A better plan, in my opinion, would be to contact the state or local enforcement agencies in the US port cities where the ship docks, assuming that the state in question has a restrictive smoking law. For example, the Washington state authorities apparently do believe that the state's restrictive smoking law applies to cruise ships (of whatever flag) while they are in state waters. What they need are "complaints" to form a basis for taking action.

Pursuit of happiness? Huh! ROFLMAO. It's a filthy habit. Did you notice your teeth are brown. Did you notice your smokers lines on your face? Did you you notice your skin is tarnished looking. Did you notice your fingers are tinged brown? Did you notice your clothing reeks? Did you notice your house has yellowing walls and a tar residue on EVERYTHING? Did you notice people don't like the way you smell? Did you know you have awful breath? Did you know your unrine smells of smoke? Did you know your skin is aging faster than a nonsmoker? Did you notice that cough you have? Did you know it will kill you some day? Did you notice that look the smart people are giving you when you walk by them smoking? Did you know you aren't supposed to throw those butts out your car window, and not on the ground?

Yup. It's a filthy habit. My parents smoked and it killed both of them. I don't know how my boyfriend then/husband now EVER managed to spend any time with me when we were dating. I went to college and could almost never return to spend time at home again.

I do not think I should have to put up with smoke in my cruise cabin if you are smoking next door. If the cruise line cannot control the air quality in my room then you should not be allowed to smoke. My health trumps your pleasure. It's life, liberty and the pursuit of happines.

How did you know that my urine smells of smoke?

I do have to admit, you are the very first connoisseur of urine that I have ever met.

Therefore, I promise you, I will not use your privy.

But yes, I will smoke in my suite.

I will smoke on my balconies.

I will smoke in the smoking areas around the pool.

I will smoke in the Casino.

After all, I bet I paid more for my suite, than you did!

Who made you God?

I do know that on Carnival Splendor they have Spa cabins on two decks near the spa. There is no smoking allowed in those cabins at all, they make you sign a specific notice when boarding that you agree there will be no smoking allowed. We stayed in an inside cabin, so I don't know 100% for sure, but I think it also applied to the balcony area - no smoking in the Spa section.

That being said, those cabins were a little more pricey than the regular cabins, however you did get the perk of having a spa pass into the thermal suite area, mineral pool, etc. I don't know for sure if the ships that were built after Splendor have these Spa cabins or not.

I don't know if any NCL ships have cabins like this that are designated non-smoking, as we are going on our first NCL cruise in a couple of weeks. Just thought I'd throw the info I know about Carnival out there.

While I don't really have a strong opinion for or against in this case, I have to take issue with this statement. If one has strong feelings, why not register your concern with the company? That's how policies get changed, if the company determines that enough of their constituents is not in favor of a policy. If however, feedback indicates that the majority of constituents are in favor, then the policy remains. It's simply a business decision.

Chair hogs do not kill people, smokers through second hand smoke kill people.

Im curious if anyone knows why the very strick smoking policy on the Carnival ship failed?

Here's info from wikipedia:

The Paradise was built to be the world's first completely non-smoking cruise ship. Every step of her construction was done by non-smoking personnel and she was entered into service supported by several anti-smoking and cancer-prevention groups. "No smoking" signs were placed prominently on both sides of the ship and on the stern under the name.

Non-smoking rules were strictly enforced. No smoking materials of any kind were permitted aboard. If anything was seen or found, the passenger was fined $250 and put off at the next port (transportation home to be provided at passenger's own expense). Due to poor revenue, Carnival decided to discontinue the smoke-free ship in December 2003 because non-smokers tend to not drink or gamble as much as those accustomed to smoke.

I think another reason why it didn't prosper is that it was doing only Caribbean runs. When it moved to begin going out of California, that's when they ended the No-Smoking policy. Seems a little counter-intuitive.

Finally a sane statement. This action is exactly what changed Celebrity.

If you want a ship with absolutely no smoking you might have to rent your own yacht. Most lines have smoking areas. Carnival tried a non smoking ship, it didn't work, remember you have your views, but others have their. I think we all need to learn to consider each others differences. (i am a non smoker I will add) except in the casino/

Now, to answer your question: smoking is allowed in cabins, but I have never heard of anyone who was bothered with a tobacco smell from X occupants of a cabin. I don't know what is done, but never have we smelled any smoke on any ship except HAL.

yes, there are some public areas where smoking is permitted, but only a couple: 1 side of the ship outdoors and usually 1 bar plus the casino. Even in the casino most ships have a non smoking area.

Nita

No ship I've been on has had a no smoking section in the casino. Or perhaps if they did smoke filled every part anyway. The casino is not for those who are allergic or have asthma in any case. Our travel friend has a bad time just walking through it. Maybe the smoke is a good thing as it keeps me from losing money playing the slots.

Well, Celebrity cruise line does not allow smoking in the casino, in your room, not even on your balcony, very very few places you can smoke on celebrity, if you get caught smoking you will be fined, another infraction and you may be sent bye bye.

Please write your congress person now, right now, state that you want all cruise ships that port or stop in the usa to be nonsmoking, we can get this done people.

Nita, when I was on X Summit there was a no smoking section of slots. I would say about 2 dozen of them. Fortunately there were one or two I liked (and that liked me). It was actually in an area right outside the casino. Smoke was not an issue at all. Occasionally a smoker would wander in, not noticing the signage. I smiled and cordially pointed it out that it was a non-smoking section. Every single time the person was very nice and apologetic. This was before X went non smoking in their casinos, so they were already recognizing their non smoking guests.

My friend sailed on RCI last summer and they offered a few smoke free nights in their casino.

I have to laugh about something. For years I have flown in and out of Las Vegas McCarrren airport. I might play a few slots. There used to be this little enclosed room for non smokers to play slots. All of the rest out in the open were smoking. Now it's reversed, all the smokers are in the little room.

My urine smells? Now it is I ROFLMAO

I just went for a medical for a new insurance policy I am taking out. I was told that if I had been in the same room as a smoker in the last little while the urine test would reflect that. Not sure if the doctor was trying to spook me or this is in fact true. I do not indulge in any other kind of smoking and I know certain drugs will be apparent for a number of weeks.

I consider any kind of smoke harmful. We find it very unfortunate if at dinner, we are seated next to a smoker, the smell of them, their clothes and breath is very pungent. Even one smoker in a room or casino can affect all the other patrons.

I quit when I was 25 years old, not because of any health reasons (we are all invincible at that age) but due to the fact I was the only smoker in the crew. No one wanted to sit with me at coffee or lunch, not because of my personality but due to the fact I reeked of smoke. I showered regularly and had no idea I was that nauseating to my fellow crew mates. Luckily I figured it out and gladly quit my habit. Even in the 70’s we were not allowed to smoke below decks.

I know we all have our rights and it is legal to smoke, but we all quit one day.

I've got no problems with him registering his concerns but he did use the expression "get mad" ????? It would be like me complaining to a doughnut shop "I don't like the jam you use in your doughnuts", when right next-door is a shop selling the doughnuts with the jam that I do like. What's the difference?

Or, an even better example, I wouldn't dream of pestering Celebrity to change their policy. As a smoker, I wouldn't entertain cruising with them. I have other choices, thankfully.

I think non-smokers are far more vociferous than us chilled-out smokers

Read Celebrity is rethinking their policy as they have many ships that are by no means sailing full!!! Maybe why Carnival did away with their smoke free ship!!! Just my opinion!!!

Let's hope that it doesn't take a cabin fire on a ship to get them to change the policy. I agree..it should be limited to outside decks and maybe the casino. When I smoked I often stayed in hotels in non-smoking rooms and it was never an issue. I went somewhere else to smoke.

Unfortunately, the balcony fire a couple of years ago on a cruise ship (I think it was a Princess ship but can't remember for sure) has not "sparked" a change in the smoking policy on NCL. I don't know what it is going to take to make the ships safer for everyone.

Yes this is always my cruise nightmare...fire! I was so happy when Celebrity stopped the smoking in cabins, I felt safer that some intoxicated smoker would not fall asleep while lit up. However standing on my aft balcony on Century, a smoker from the Lido tossed a lit cigarette in my hair!

You just can't fix stupid!

RCCL's Oasis of the Seas has a non smoking section which is exactly one half of the casino. The non smoking side of the casino smells of fresh air, with no odor at all of smoke. I don't know how they do it because the non smoking side is open to the smoking side. I walked through both sides of Oasis' casino and there was a distinct difference in the air quality with the non smoking side smelling fresh as a daisy.
