Casual in Main Dining Room

ATCMickey

Recommended Posts

I've read the Q&A on the RCCL website, but am still unsure of something as this will be our first cruise with them. On casual nights in the main dining room, are jeans common attire for men? I know their website says slacks for men and that shorts are not appropriate, but I'm trying to gauge what is common for casual nights.

Thanks in advance for any insight anyone might provide,

I know on my last cruise with Carnival, yes jeans were common with mean, nice polo's usually came with that. Not too sure about RCCL. I know probably to be safe, I'll be packing a few pairs of slacks to be safe, along with my suit for formal nights.

Since you're basically new to Cruise Critic we'll have to give you a pass on this one. Be neat and clean bottom line. Just remember jeans are hot in the Caribbean.

Just as a heads up for future reference, topics surely to be debated ad nauseum are:

1. shorts in the MDR any time

2. jeans on formal nights

3. smoking on the ship

4. bringing alcohol on the ship

5. taking food off the ship to private stop

6. do I need a passport

7. it's my vacation, screw everyone

and many more which have been beaten to death.

Happy Cruising.

Yes jeans are acceptacle in the MDR on both men and women. On our cruise we just got got back from, Liberty of The Seas, the people that sat behind us on one of the "formal nights" had jeans and sweat suits on. They were escorted to their table so obviously anything goes.

My husband and I both wear jeans on casual nights. Ours are no heavier than other slacks and are certainly cooler to wear than polyester because jeans breath!

My husband wears his with a button down shirt, usually long sleeved and nice shoes and I wear mine with a dressy top and heels.

#7 is my favorite, you can always pick these people out around the ship IMO.

Jeans are fine. You won't find any prosciption in RCCL's literature. Just remember (and I'm sure you will) what is appropriate at a sit-down restaurant at home is appropriate on board (no ripped, soiled, or otherwise unpresentable or offensive clothing {i.e. s**t happens t-shirts:eek:}). Bon Voyage!

My husband has worn jeans on casual night with no problem. I like rule #7 that it is my vacation etc. We are cruising in a couple weeks and my husband just asked me if he should pack his suit and I replied no and leave the tie behind also.

We will be clean and in neat clothes but I am just not going to dress up when I am on vacation and really do not care what others think.

You will get many different opinions on this. I personally wouldn't dress in jeans in the main dining room - even on a casual night. I look upon the main dining room as a restaurant and if I was dining at a restaurant on dry land I wouldn't wear jeans. If I was dining in a cafe though, which I would class the Windjammer as, yes I would wear jeans.

Thanks for being so gracious giving me a pass and all...

I've been to 16 different islands in the caribbean and been on 33 cruises to date...so I am somewhat familiar with weather in the caribbean and cruise etiquette. This is my first RCCL trip. The question hardly falls into the categories of oblivious behavior you cite above. I asked the question because I do try to show respect for my fellow cruisers and observe common protocol. I did not ask about shorts or jeans on formal night, I asked about jeans on casual night...hardly a beyond the pale question. If you take a look at my profile you'll notice I signed up w/CC 5 years ago so hardly new...don't post a lot but largely because I really dislike the snide, cynical, sarcastic responses of folks like you. If you're the welcoming committee for cruise critic, save your breath. I've found lots of really respectful, helpful folks on this forum...but responses like yours don't help motivate others to wade in. So if you don't have anything truly constructive to offer, save you pedantic arrogance for someone else.

Thank you to everyone else for some truly respectful, helpful feedback. It is truly appreciated.
