Nassua?

Stay on the ship:o . I'm not a big fan of Nassau. Atlantis is ghastly expensive. There are probably organized excursions but there really aren't any great things to see / do. We walked around the main section of town for about 1/2 hour, then went back on board to enjoy the luxury of having the pool area almost to ourselves.

NASSAU is an easy island to get around...just grab a van...they can take you to everything that the excursions go to for 1/2 the $$.

Trish's advice is also good. Enjoy the empty ship and use the facilities. Or you can do what I always do...run out to a van and get a $5 ride to Atlantis...make your deposit at the casino and then take the van back to the ship...shouldn't take more than 45 minutes on a bad day...maybe 2-3 hours on a good day...LOL!!!

Stay on board! We stopped there Saturday and it was my first time there. I will never step foot off the ship in Nassau again. People hound you like Jamaica and I would rather enjoy the pool than say no thank you a hundred times.

Try a catamaran around the islands.....I love that. We also did the "dolphin adventure" and I thought it was well worth the money. The water taxi over was fun too. I thought the water was gorgeous. Once we got to the Dolphin Encounter", I was impressed here also. There is a beach attached, I think you can just to the beach thing if you don't want to interact with the dolphins. It was very pretty there.

Another vote for staying on the ship. If you do venture off, try to avoid the straw market at all costs. We did the glass bottom boat excursion - nothing spectacular but an okay way to spend a little bit of time. I don't think I would recommend it though.

There were 4 of us, so for 50.00pp, we rented a room at comfort inn suites which gave us full access to Atlantis. We were able to tour the digs, use all the pools, casino, and waterslides. It is beautiful there and this turned out to be one of our more reasonable excursions. We never even bothered to go into our room at the comfort inn.

I actually enjoyed Nassau -- more so than Cococay anyway. Atlantis is very expensive overall but for $29 pp the tour of the Aquarium was well worth it. Then head over to The Bahamian Kitchen for some of the freshest seafood you've ever had in your life for a lunch. (The Grouper is awesome) We spent about 3-4 hours total off ship and really had a good time. I say avoid the water taxi and take a land ride over to Atlantis. However nice the water taxi sounds the one we were on was way overcrowded and the fumes from it were terrible.

Take a horse and buggy ride around town. Cost is $20.00 for 2 & the tour last about half an hour. We were there on a Monday and the straw mkt was closed. We were not hounded by anyone, nothing like Jamaica which is known for locals bothering tourists...Next time we will go to Atlantis:cool:

We were there a month or so ago. I wasn't impressed. We just wandered around the shopping area for a couple hours and went back to the ship. And yes, we had about 50 people ask if our daughter wanted her hair braided. A bit annoying after a while. I realize they just want to earn a few $ but it gets tiring.

Realtorbmw,

How much of the aquarium and/or the grounds were you able to check out for $29? Were you able to tour the 'dig' and other sections of the aquarium on the grounds? or was the tour limited to inside the casino (where you only see part of the aquarium?)

Thanks..

Having been there twice I would probably opt for staying on the ship next time. However, I love to haggle at the straw market. I used to live in Taiwan and love to haggle with the merchants wherever I go, Cancun, Punta Cana, and Nassau were exceptionally fun...

For the $29 you get a resort arm band giving you unlimited access to all the Aquariam exhibits including the dig replica. Also, you can tour the grounds of the resort, all over the inside etc... You do not, however, gain use of the pool area etc... And mind you the Atlantis staff was out in full force policing the grounds. In one of the aquariam exhibits there is a hands on -- petting if you will -- with Starfish, Sea Cucumber, Conch etc... that you could touch. It even had pillows to rest your arms and towels to dry off. The attendant of this exhibit knew more than I ever planned on learning about aquatic life

To me it really was worth the extra $ to see it. I can't tell you how many folks were denied entry because they hadn't purchased a pass or didn't have a resort card.

And I will reiterate how good the Bahamian Kitchen was for lunch. Nothing fancy but very, very clean and exceptional seafood.

Nassau might not be the best port of call but we always enjoy Nassau. We take the water taxi (they cramp you in like sardines but it is an adventure) to Paridise Island and go to Atlantis and just walk around, you can see the small aquarium for free. There is a nice public area of the beach just below the hotels that offers jet skis and other water activity. Buy your ticket one way for the water taxi, then you can decide if you want to take a cab or return by water taxi. There are also excursions to the Queens stair case and some of the old forts that are very interesting. IMO there is to much to do to stay on the ship your first time on the island.;)

I found the snorkel trips to be pretty good and a nice way to spend the afternoon if you're into that. Not the BEST snorkling ever, but we did see a few rays and a TON of Sgt. Majors. The best part was feeding them.

I enjoy the straw market just because you can get gifts cheap.

Atlantis is expensive but the aquariums are neat.

The hair braiders and young boys selling flutes are annoying but smile and say NO firmly, they leave you alone (unlike Jamaica...)

I think most any port is want you make it! If you like history, go to the pirate museum. It's a little "touristy" but fun anyway. Senior Frogs was expensive and a little overrated, but we made the best of it anyway by joining in the free tequila shot conga lines.

Thank you realtorbmw......

This will be our second time to Nassau. The first time (April 2004) we rented a car and drove around the island, and then went to Atlantis (but did not go in because we ran out of time.

We'll be there again this April (Explorer of the Seas).

Since we've never been to the aquarium, we'd rather spend 29$ to see Atlantis than to stay on the ship.

I guess it's all in what you make of it. DH and I go to Nassau all the time when we want a quick beach getaway. Certainly, it's not Barbados or Aruba or the Virgin Islands - and definitely not where we would go for more than a weekend at the time. But, it's no more expensive than going to the beach around here for a weekend and it's a heck of a lot more beautiful (the beaches, that is). I guess it could be quite a problem, though, if you're not into the whole beach scene.

We're going over in April on the Sovereign just for some sun and fun on the beach. Can't wait.
