Chair Hogs, Dress Codes and Smgelling Alcohol.

For the record, I'm of the opinion of who really cares (that much) what other cruisers do, if it doesn't affect you...and more power to the smugglers. My big issue is the people who try to get ON the elevator without letting you OFF. UGH!

I'm just curious if anyone else has noticed that windjammer is more strict about what people wear lunch than the MDR is at dinner?! God FORBID someone walk in, in a bikini top and shorts at lunch to get a plate...TO GO!! However someone at dinner, on formal night is good to go in cut off jean shorts and a t-shirt. W T F?!

The issue is actually quite simple. If you are breaking the rules and impacting someone else's vacation - don't do it. If you are breaking the rules and NOT impacting someone else's vacation - do it at your own risk. This way it is simple.

This pretty much says it all. You have freedom and rights as long as they do not infringe on the rights of others. "Don't Tread on Me"

I would bet that the smugglers pay for more drinks than anyone else on the ship and probably gamble more than the others too. The few drinks they are getting for free doesn't compare to the amount of money they are dropping in the casino and at the bars. The day RCI or Carnival says we need to raise drink prices because nobody paid for drinks on our cruise will never come. Is it against the cruise line rules? Yes. Should a non-drinker or a non-smuggler care? No.

I agree with this. I think that, based on the numerous threads I've read, MANY cruisers smuggling don't intend for the smuggled drinks to be their ONLY drinks on the cruise. Over and over again I read that people just want to be able to have their favorite drink in their room while getting ready to go to dinner or on their balcony without having to run back and forth to the bar. Those same people say that, when outside of their rooms and when at dinner, they pay for drinks like everyone else. This would be the same thing that I would do. I would like the convenience of a drink in my room during the small amount of time I'm actually in my room. But I also wouldn't want the inconvenience of going back to my room every time I'd want a drink. Smuggling one rumrummner would in no way deter me from ordering drinks at the bar throughout the trip and wouldn't change the fact that I would have a rather large bar tab! :)

If I wanted to sit with people who dressed inapproprately, drank smuggled liquor and hogged seats i would be going to Nascar events not cruising.

And if I wanted to have someone tell me how to dress, what to eat, what to drink, how to act...I'd go on a cruise with my ex-wife...

Well CruzFace, what about the Cruise line? It's their ball game... dont they have rights?..When they say no chair hogs, no smuggling and say no jeans or shorts in the MDR and you disobey their directives arent you "treading" on them. But of course we are picking and choosing what rule we'd like to follow after all arent we? Also,by reading these threads you can certainly tell it does "tread" on, and offend, some when they see others blatantly disobeying established dress codes......That is now called patriots???....

Good lord! Reading through this thread makes me wonder if I even want to go on a cruise! I'm planning on wearing a long dress for formal night but I could care less if someone else was at my table wearing jeans - it may make them feel out of place when they find themselves surrounded by others that did dress up but those people certainly aren't going to have an effect on me and how I feel. Provided people have decent table manners, I say let them enjoy their vacation as they see fit.

People who seem overly concerned with what others (complete strangers!) do or don't do really need to find something more intellectual to occupy their minds! In fact, I find the catty/opinionated/boorish attitudes far less appealing than someone sitting at my table in a pair of jeans.

Just my 2 cents!

Well Michelle... you sure are a beautiful woman...I bet you always look your very best at dinner! To me it boils down to class and good taste.

You have loyalty to RCI which is fine. I, however, do not particularly care if I hurt RCI's feelings by not following one of their rules which are only there to increase the company's bottom line. Don't forget, this is the same company that has lowered the quality of food in the MDR in an attempt to force you to PAY extra for better food. The founding fathers would have called this unfair and would have tossed deck chairs overboard. :D

Once again, however, I never said that I pick and choose the rules to follow. All I said was that I don't get upset when someone breaks a stupid rule so long as it doesn't impact my vacation.

Plus, I was only kidding about the "Patriot" analogy. People seem to be taking this issue and life in general way too seriously. Most people go on a cruise to have fun. Everyone's goal should be to have fun and not interfere with somebody elses fun. That's it.

I am loyal to RCI as long as they give me my Diamond plus advantages...RCI gives me free drinks and discounts and I am there... When that stops... I'll be loyal to another cruise line that gives me perks..That is as far as my loyalty goes. ;)

I too dont really care what others do....But I see everybody follows the rules they choose. What doesnt impact "your vacation" may certainly affect someone else's. For me I like to see my wife and kids dressed for dinner, but I have absolutly no problem packing vodka in my bag. I prob would chair hog but being from Florida, I see the sun as damaging the skin. However, I dont pretend that my failure to follow select rules doesnt have an impact on someone somewhere.:):):)

I might need to find flame resistant suit. But these are just my thought I am throwing out here.

I have been reading and posting on the boards and there are a few common threads that make me scratch my head and wonder if I need to do some research.

Holding chairs with towels or some other item for your use later in the day is against the rules and if you read threads on this topic the normal response is “why can’t people obey the rules”.

Alcohol Smuggling is breaking the rules and is a very heated debate for and against.

But then comes dress codes and most everyone responds that these are recommendations but do as you want it’s your vacation do what you want.

So it’s my vacation – hmm. My vacation do what I want –

Hog at least 5 seats in the prime location for all shows for DH and I- I don’t like to sit next to folks so there are 2 extra seats to be left empty and a seat for my bag and wrap. Why should they be in my lap it’s is my vacation.

If I have traditional dinning I am going to show up 30-45 late or early because that works for my schedule and if I have MDT I need a table for 6 for DH and myself (again I do not like to sit next to strangers and we want to dine alone). And I will ware PJs because there comfy and well I am on vacation. Rules/recommendations don’t matter.

Again Hog 5 lounge chairs in a prime location by the pool all day so at 1 pm we can have the perfect sun for half an hour while topping off the sodas (DH and I got using only one fountain card) with the Rum we smuggled in with our rumrunners.

Walk up to any bar/counter a head of the line and have my desires full filled.

I could go on but won’t since it is all about me.

Now back to reality – When were we as a society taught the rules/recommendation did not apply to us when we are on vacation? Most of the rules/recommendations come from common curtsey and manners. Even my 6 year old son knows there are rules that apply under all circumstances or suffer the consequence.

You might see this twice as I am also posting to the Carnival Thread

Well said! The rudeness of people astounds me. On a ship of 3,000 plus people, common courtesy is a must. Rules are established for a reason, many times for the safety and enjoyment of all passengers. I will never forget when a man stood on my daughters deck chair, WHILE SHE WAS SITTING ON IT, to get a picture of the Statue of Liberty as we were sailing out! People blatantly cutting lines when everyone was waiting patiently to get off the ship in Bermuda. They don't even try to be sneaky about it, they just get off the elevator and join the line right there as if there aren't 1,000 people already waiting. i could go on and on but I'm sure everyone has a story. Kudos to Princess, on our last cruise we saw them turn someone away from the dining room because they weren't dressed appropriately. if you don't want to dress up, then eat in the buffet!

There will always be rude people that we have to deal with unfortunately. I just wish people would follow the rule of refraining from any activity that will negatively affect someone else's vacation.

Dude you still dont get it....everytime you choose to ignore a rule or law you have the possibility of negatively affecting someone else's vacation.

I am not telling anybody to follow any rule..Just saying take responsibility for your actions...what you do will affect another...:)

This is a very interested debate to follow for a new cruiser!

I have to add that as a newbie if I don't see these rules being enforced I assume that they are more of a suggestion then a "must do".

I admit, we smuggled a small amount of booze on and before joining cc I didn't realize what a big deal it was. I figured if they let it go, they can't care that much about it! Same goes for the formal wear - if no one on the ship is going to enforce the expectation why would you assume it is important to adhere to?

Well this is not entirely true...When my wife makes the effort to fix her hair and buy and wear a nice evening dress for formal night...then sits next to a person or people who dont care about the rules and wear jeans or otherwise dont acknowledge the event...this is bothersome. Especially true in the fact that cruise line has built an amazing dinning room, dressed the waiters in formal clothing and are serving lobster and filet of beef..And some dont even care to make even a modest effort to engage in the festivities....This will always be a contention!! You cant force some to have a little class and respect.

People pick and choose what rule they want to follow....

I agree with this statement. I ultimately don't let the way other people dress OR NOT, affect my vacation, but on formal night part of the experience of the evening is to see everyone all dressed up, it's such a rare occasion. It really does take away from it when others dress down too much. I hardly expect everyone to be in Tuxes and Really formal gowns, just nice, and it seems it just keeps getting more lax. I think some standard should be required in the main dining on formal nights at least. If you don't want to participate the Windjammer is available. This isn't meant to be derogatory, I realize it's everyone's individual vacation and you absolutely have the right to not dress up if you choose not to, it just shouldn't be allowed in the main dining room and that's on the staff to upkeep really.

OMGoodness, are you kidding me (standing on your daughters chair), not that this surprises me really. I agree with that many people in one place manners is a must and limited I'm afraid.

No, the ships don't enforce it much. Shorts I've seen sent back for dinner. I could care less if someone smuggles on booze, I suppose if the cruise line ends up not making enough profit because too many people smuggle through too much, they may raise prices a bit, that could affect everyone, but....
