Elation Propulsion + 72$

Well just back from 5 days of circles and 6knots... I guess one can say a bad day on a cruise is a better day than at work.

Rumor has it the ship experienced problems just after we left Mobile. Not sure if thats true. If it is I would be really ticked off. Was told that they thought it was fixed so we kept on.

On the second day I felt a lurch and watched us go from about 20knots to about 6 or so. The whole next day we would go slow then speed up.

My issue was that they didnt inform us very well. It wasnt till around 9ish or maybe later on the Cozumel port day that they told us we would port late..No "ship". We didnt actually port until close to 3. I knew at this point it was a good bet we were not going to Calica. They made that anouncement while we in port. So yes we had port day in Cozumel but alot of stuff closed at around 5ish.

When we got back on they informed us no Calica.. so we went about 6 knots or so all the way home..making sure to circle in international waters for about 15 hours so they could keep the casino open and sell more booze..at least more than the "Mobile" booze.

I know they could not port us early due to immigration and what not. Gee they did give us half price bingo one day and gave each of us 72$ in compensation. Well wasnt that nice.. I was on that ship like a trapped rat so of course I spent the 72$.

All in all it could of been a lot worse.. I think had we had one day of sun would have made it more bearable..but circles, clouds and rain was not the ideal vacation. One guest put it best.. "I just spent 4 days riding around the gulf of Mexico drinking!"

Oh well... whats a cruiser to do??

$72 to me seems most generous. We missed 2 ports on Conquest, and got approx $20 pp for both ports together.

We did get money off a future cruise which I probably wouldnt use... as I dont plan on booking more Carnival cruises.

I do thank you for your report as Im on Elation in a few weeks and wondering if its really "fixed"

Im wondering if it really is fixed .. then why the slow speed all the way back to Mobile? Did they say they were just going slow because they were ahead of schedule, or why?

This is the official statement from Carnival regarding the propulsion problem:

"On Tuesday, Jan. 11, the Carnival Elation experienced technical difficulties with its propulsion system. The ship was sailing at... a reduced speed, however, all other hotel systems were operating normal. Shipboard technicians were able to fix the problem and the Carnival Elation began sailing for Cozumel where it is expected to arrive at 10:15 a.m., roughly two hours behind schedule.

The Carnival Elation is on a 5-day cruise that departed Mobile on Jan. 10. and will visit Cozumel and Calica."

1015...I think not.. lies lies lies..Try 3pm... Oh well... It was great to go in circles and get back 72$ for it!!!

We are hoping that when we call we may get compensation for future cruise..not a balcony or free cruies..just a little more for what we feel was their fault and they were not forthcoming about it at all.

As I said before..we were told we had issues not long after we left Mobile..instead of going back they though it better to go in circles doing 6knots for 4 days...

In Carnival's defense, I would have been one who wanted to go in circles, and not go back to Mobile where it was freezing cold. Id have rather gone to Cozumel as they did.

But since they never got up to speed on the way back, no one really knows if its fixed or not.

The weather in the south has been usually cold this past week... so its not totally unexpected if it was cooler than usual in Cozumel as well.

Im on both Ecstasy and Elation in the next month .. so I get a double dose of whatever winter is giving us cruisers.

Yes..this is the 3rd year in a row I have done this exact same week out of Mobile and was the first time the weather has not "smiled" on us. The crew told us the weather has been pretty cool also. That's the beaks with Mother Nature..the one thing I could not blame on Carnival..try as I may!!!

Sure seems to be a bit of discrepancy in CCL's official statement and what the OP posted

Mach, I'm wondering if you posted this to show how ridiculous Carnival is at it's reporting of the "facts", or if you posted it to show that the OP, who was there, is full of caca????????

Yes..they didnt tell us till about 10am that we would be "porting" early afternoon. I know the times because I have my emails that I sent my excursion person in Cozumel informing him I would not make it. Around 9am they said we would be a late but didnt have a time..then at 10am they said early afternoon. It was close to 3pm before we could embark..I want to say we docked about 2pm ish.

They did'nt inform anyone of the Calica cancellation until sometime when we were in port.. we found out when we got back on. I had a pretty good idea when were taking so long to port in Cozumel that no way we would go to Calica. The speed we were going I knew it would take us over 2 days to get back!

They were just real "shady" with their information.

As a newly solo cruiser, I refuse to pay 200% for Carnival when I can do much lower solo supplements on other lines. I dont love Carnival enough to pay 200%.

.. and back to Elation .. Im still concerned. If it never got up to speed on the way back, who knows if it can or cant. Time will tell.

No "caca" here..just 800$ full of DOD's!!! I might add I was in full command of my faculties though on the port day of Cozumel. As I told another poster, I'm very aware of times of announcements and when we ported due to emails I sent my excursion guy for Cozumel.

They were very evasive with announcements..one of the reasons I'm a little ticked. I'm hoping they may provide some type of further compensation. These things happen but sure seemed could have been handled a little better. Kinda know now what it must feel like to be a North Korean citizen..just the filtered feel good "facts"..nothing on whats really going on!

Oh well...we are home and safe..no tan..just big bar bill and some bingo stories!

Did win a medal though!!!!

Thank you for posting this information, even after you just got off of the ship. It is very much appreciated. I am sorry to hear about your cruise. That is hard when you plan and anticipate so much more than that.

We are trying to decide if we should sail next week. We are booked on the Jan. 24th sailing. I have called several times and they give very little information and certainly have not told me if the problem is fixed. All they read to me is, "The ship is scheduled to sail with no changes to intinery."

I agree with you and would not want to sail for 5 days with only one stop and we would cancel if this were the case.

What are the chances you think they will tell us before we boarded and sailed if we were only going to one port?

I do know how you feel about facts not forthcoming. I was on Conquest when Ike hit Galveston. We were not told until 12 hours before we came into New Orleans.. no time to prepare hardly, it was a madhouse, no sleep, 3 am finally got a outside line to get to transportation home. Desk unprepared with phone numbers. Desk hung up on people called from their cabins... I always hear "carnival did the best they can" but I can tell you I was unhappy with how it was handled .. not blaming Carnival for the weather, but how it was handled. People on CC seem to not understand my point. I said at that point, I might never do Carnival again, thats how upset I was at how it was handled.

I think you are going to have to decide yourself how you feel it was handled .. carnival is known to not handle emergencies the best, but I thought they were improving after our fiasco.

Mach...this press release is dated and old.

How about using all the resources you have and find some up to date info. I am planning on booking the Feb. 12 cruise today, and do not expect these problems to still be there then, but am concerned for those leaving out today.

Sorry to admit...because the Splendor is still on every ones minds.

1) They probably did fix the problem....but it must not have worked as well as expected, because it appears now the problem was not repaired.

2) Note the word "expected"....guess they were wrong.

3) They did not expect to miss a port when this press release was sent...obviously wrong.

Oh yeah. I forgot you are a "Solo" cruiser. Well at least you have a couple of Carnival cruises to look forward to. If I remember correctly, you are on the Exstasy for Super Bowl right? If so, I will be on that cruise too!

I think they will board everyone and wait until last second. I would think it would be fixed by then. After talking to some people they were saying if its propeller issues those can be an "easy" fix by divers.

They made announcement when we were in Cozumel that we were waiting to leave because of people meeting ship to "fix" problem..we did a slow crawl back so I dont think its fixed. There were times yesterday we were doing 6 knots..then back up to maybe 15 knots.. oh well...Good luck. If it's sunny it will at least be a little better!

Fire,

I remember all of your posts about Ike and the aftermath with the vehicle issues. I have gotten great information from your posts over the years, and I hope you will continue to post on the Carnival boards.

Thanks for the insight. I guess it is a "wait and see" at this point for us and hope I can get someone that will tell me the real truth so we can make an informed decision.

I have to agree with you about getting further compensation. I would call in and ask. It seems to me that since everyone had to be on the ship for that extra day, they made a lot more money in drinks, shopping and in the casino then that $72 pp. I understand that things happen but customer service and treating people fairly is of upmost importance in any business!

Another question if someone knows: I know the Carnival sails about today, I am assuming for 5 days. That would bring it back on Thur. We sail about Monday Jan. 24th. Where is the ship from Thursday to Monday? Is it on a 4 day cruise?

yes, it does a 4 day cruise. Just to Cozumel. I dont think its possible to call in and get more info... the reps just will not have it and cant guarantee the ship is fixed. Waste of energy calling.

I would guess very little.... but you should be able to get a good indication if it is fixed by the cruise leaving today. If all goes well, then you are probably OK. We are book on the Feb. 7th sailing. Also, if you cancel now, isn't the refund $0?

Policy states that the refund it $0 and I talked to the lady at Carnival about the fact that we booked under the assumption we were going to two ports and booked specifically to go to Calica (we live in New Orleans and could have gone on a cruise out of NO but they don't go to Calicia). She said that in this situation, she does not know what Carnival would do. She said it varies and sometimes they suprise her. I haven't read through the fine print or even tried to get a real answer about refunds since I am hoping that I don't have to. Even allowing us to change to a different sail date with no refund would be fine with us. Going on a 5 day cruise with only one stop isn't for us at all!
