HAL and Eurodam Questions

Recommended Posts

My husband's aunt and uncle are going on the Eurodam in a few weeks, and I have been asked to do some research. I have been on different lines so I know a lot of the general information about cruising; however, the specifics on HAL's line I'm not so sure of.

Food and Drink

· I am assuming that Iced Tea, non-bottled water, coffee, tea, and milk are all included?

· What about juice? Free just in the morning or all day?

· Sodas – Coke or Pepsi products?

· Cappuccino and Espresso – is it like Carnival where you can get them free of charge at dinner or is there always a surcharge?

· Are you allowed to bring your own wine onboard? What about sodas?

· What types of specialty restaurants are there?

· They do have a buffet open the first day, correct?

· Is there a soda card? If so, how much is it?

· Room service – available all day w/o a surcharge? The breakfast - is it just continental they offer or is it all types of dishes?

· Is there an omelet station at breakfast?

· Can they get some type of snack at midnight if they want?

· Do they have selections for people with Diabetes?

Dress

· Did I read correctly that you must stay in slacks and a nice shirt or dress throughout the night – you cannot go back to your room and change into shorts?

· Are jeans allowed on Smart Casual?

TV

· What channels are there?

· The picture on the website makes it look like the TV is on the side of the bed, not in front. Is that correct?

· Do they have movies that rotate day to day?

Tips

· What is the cost per person each day?

Cabin and Bathroom

· They have a balcony (actually, I am assuming a suite). Do they give you any amenities like Carnival does (disposable razor, toothpaste, etc)

· His uncle is 6’5”. How difficult will it be for him to shower?

· Is it a shower curtain or door?

· Is there a hair dryer?

· How many outlets are there?

· Do the balconies have regular chairs or loungers?

Muster Drill

· Do you still have to wear your life jackets or have they changed that policy? You still have the drill but you just show up at your station.

Boarding/Embarkation day

· What time is good for boarding? I know on Carnival and Royal they say 2pm, but we usually get there around 10:30-11am, board and have lunch.

· What time do the cabins open?

Does anyone have a copy of the daily activity sheets or menus?

I am sure that I will think of more questions, or read answers that lead to other questions, but I thought this might be a good start.:)

Specialty Restaurants is a topic all in itself. There are several on the Eurodam. There is the Pinnacle Grill (sterling silver steak, fish, etc.). dinner there is $20 and lunch is $10 - reservations are always recommended.

On certain nights, there is Le Cirque dinner which is offered in the Pinnacle Grill. This is a much more limited menu with more appetizers and is quite popular. Dinner for that is $39 (without wine). I forget the price with the wine samplings. I think it is $20 more.

The Tamarind is a fantastic Pan-Asian restaurant that receives absolutely rave reviews. it is $15 for dinner and lunch is free. Lunch is a fixed menu though. Both require reservations.

And then there is the Canaletto - it serves Italian food in a corner of the Lido. It is free and dress is casual there. Reservations are also recommended for that.

You can also do room service (which is very good) for breakfast or dinner and there is a 24 hour room service menu.

The Lido is also available for breakfast, lunch and dinner if they prefer that to the MDR (Main Dining Room).

i don't think I forgot anything

· What types of specialty restaurants are there?

· They do have a buffet open the first day, correct?absolutely

· Is there a soda card? If so, how much is it?$25 will get you $50 worth of soda

· Room service – available all day w/o a surcharge? The breakfast - is it just continental they offer or is it all types of dishes? yes - all day - no surcharge. Breakfast offers everything - eggs, continental, whatever. a quite extensive menu.

· Is there an omelet station at breakfast?Of course, this is Holland America :) and an eggs benedict station and at lunch a special sandwich/panini station

· Can they get some type of snack at midnight if they want? there is a room service menu that is good for 24 hours - there is usually some type of munchie served beginning around 11 pm (I never use that so someone may need to clarify for you but I have seen it in the daily programme)

· Do they have selections for people with Diabetes? yes - HAL will take care of any special dietary needs - however - it is a good idea to notify them now and remind the dining room captain on their first night. They may want fixed dining to make things a bit easier.

Dress

· Did I read correctly that you must stay in slacks and a nice shirt or dress throughout the night – you cannot go back to your room and change into shorts?

Dress

· Did I read correctly that you must stay in slacks and a nice shirt or dress throughout the night – you cannot go back to your room and change into shorts? on smart casual night, no problem to change after dinner - I don't know if I would personally wear shorts but you can certainly wear something more comfortable. You don't have to wear a dress on smart casual night. On formal nights, many people may change afterwards. I would not wear shorts that night.

· Are jeans allowed on Smart Casual?yes, you can wear jeans on smart casual

TV

· What channels are there?

· The picture on the website makes it look like the TV is on the side of the bed, not in front. Is that correct? usually - it swivels so it is not hard to watch tv at all in bed if you so wish.

· Do they have movies that rotate day to day?yes they do. you can also get dvd's to watch

Tips

· What is the cost per person each day?$11 per person per day - automatically added to your shipboard account.

Cabin and Bathroom

· They have a balcony (actually, I am assuming a suite). Do they give you any amenities like Carnival does (disposable razor, toothpaste, etc)there will be elemis shampoo, conditioner, body conditioner, shower cap. nothing else that I can recall. If they are in a suite, find out what kind and let us know and we will let you know extra amenities that are included.

· His uncle is 6’5”. How difficult will it be for him to shower?

· Is it a shower curtain or door?

· Is there a hair dryer? yes there is

· How many outlets are there?

· Do the balconies have regular chairs or loungers?depends upon the balcony they have. depending on the size, some have chairs and some loungers. usually the chair has the ottoman though so you can put your feet up.

Muster Drill

· Do you still have to wear your life jackets or have they changed that policy? You still have the drill but you just show up at your station. You do not have to wear your life jacket to the drill.

Boarding/Embarkation day

· What time is good for boarding? I know on Carnival and Royal they say 2pm, but we usually get there around 10:30-11am, board and have lunch. You can usually board safely around 11 or 11:30 a.m.

· What time do the cabins open? The cabins are normally ready when you board or very shortly thereafter.

Does anyone have a copy of the daily activity sheets or menus?

I am sure that I will think of more questions, or read answers that lead to other questions, but I thought this might be a good start.:)

ok - I did a few more for you in red again. I will have to leave a few for others as we are not 6'5" - so I didn't want to comment on the shower. I have seen the shower doors as curtains and as glass and haven't been on the Eurodam so I think others should be able to help you with those. hope your husband's aunt and uncle have a great cruise :)

The first Le Cirque on the Nieuw Amsterdam was on Dec 2, 2010.

And it was excellent!!

The special place settings and decorations had not arrived but the food and service by the Pinnacle staff was great.

The meal was $39 per person and you could buy for $20 per person a special wine offering which was 3 glasses selected for the special dinner.

Each person was first srved an Amuse (just like the regular Pinnacle offers). It was Pate Foi Gras -- goose liver mousse with rhubarb chutney -- very good.

The appetizer was Lobster Salad "Le Cirque" -- poached lobster with haricot and citrus (I will post at a later time the recipe foe this)

Soup - Sweet Corn Soup -- prepared table side. On the bottom of the soup bowl were ground corn fritters, wood ear mushrooms and some whole kernals of corn. The corn soup -- nice and thick and very tasty with a hint of basil -- was served from a tureen.

There were 3 choices for the main menu:

Wild Halibut with leek fondue, Rocca Di Fransinello sauce -- DH had this - very flaky and tasty.

Rack of Lamb - goat cheese panisse, artichokes and arugula -- I had this -- excellent -- very tasty and meaty lamb chops -- got 2 big double ones.

Cote de Boeuf - (aged prime rib steak) - horseradish flan, sweet and sour baby beets for two. Can't comment on this.

Side Dishes:

Seasonal vegetables -- DH had them -- a mixture broccoli, summer squash, cauliflower, bamboo shoots, zuccini in a truffle oil -- excellent.

Pommes Dauphine -- I had them -- mashed potatoes made into tiny puffs and quickly fried -- good -- hot and crunchy.

Desserts:

Chocolate Souffle -- we passed on this as we had already had a couple of chocolate souffles in the Pinnacle.

Creme Brulee Le Cirque -- we both had it and loved it -- recipe will be posted at a later time.

Assortment of Sorbets - again we did not try them - so - no comment.

As I mentioned we chose to try the $20 per person selected wine paring.

When we sat down we were each served a glass of sparkling wine.

For the appetizer and soup we were each served a glass of Ruffino Pinot Grigio, Italy - juicy white peaches and citrus with a flinty-minerality (glass $8; bottle $39)

For the entree we were served Villa Florita Barbera D'Asti Superiore, Italy - persistent and intense, yet warm and harmonic (glass $10; bottle $54)

If you didn't want to go with that offering you could order anything from the list below -- all prices are for the bottle.

White Wine

Michel Redde Pouilly Fime, France - highly expressive nose and a mouth-smaking finish - $59

Cloudy Bat Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand - herbaceous flavors with hints of citrus fruits - $78

Marques de Caceres, Spain - delicious flavors of pears and apples - $29

Laboure-Roi Pouilly Fuisse, France - collage of white fruits flavors, lively floral undertones - $54

Franciscan Chardonnay, California - lively and lengthy on the palate with a great body - $47

Conundrum, California - peach, apricot, green melon and pear - $39

Red Wine

Meridian Pinot Noir, Italy - bing cherry with hints of strawberry, roses and violets - $37

Chateau Ste Michelle, Canon Ridge Merlot, Washington - a medium to full bodied rich, berry flavored long finish wine - $69

Perrin Reserve Cotes Du Rhone, France - full bodied, rich fruit with peppery finish - $39

Beringer Founders Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, California - bursts with cassis, black fruit and sweet brown spice - $39

Arboleda Carmenerem Chile - dark berries with plum, dark cherries and violets - 449

Castello Banfi Brunello Di Montalcino, Italy - soft and velvety with licorice, spices and cherry notes - $108

Coke products

Lots of people walking throughout the ship in shorts after dinner

· Are jeans allowed on Smart Casual? Not technically...but some people do wear jeans to dinner

TV

· What channels are there? news, sports, food channel, older movies (AMC I think), some newer movies (usually the movie that played in the theater the day before), a few older episodes of tv shows...king of queens, the office...My DH and i watched tv before bed every night and always found something to watch. I think in total there might be 7-10 channels.

· The picture on the website makes it look like the TV is on the side of the bed, not in front. Is that correct?

· Do they have movies that rotate day to day? yes

My DH is 6'4 and he had no problems. He used the shower in the bath tub usually..More room to move around. (we had an SS room)

· Is it a shower curtain or door? curtain

· Is there a hair dryer? yes

· How many outlets are there?i counted 3 in our room

· Do the balconies have regular chairs or loungers? 4 Chairs on ours and 2 ottomans

Muster Drill

· Do you still have to wear your life jackets or have they changed that policy? You still have the drill but you just show up at your station. no life jackets

Boarding/Embarkation day

· What time is good for boarding? I know on Carnival and Royal they say 2pm, but we usually get there around 10:30-11am, board and have lunch.

· What time do the cabins open? we were in by 12:15

Does anyone have a copy of the daily activity sheets or menus?

I am sure that I will think of more questions, or read answers that lead to other questions, but I thought this might be a good start.:)

Hope that helps we were on the Eurodam March 19th-26th:D

Thank you for all the information. His aunt is so afraid she won't enjoy it, so all this is great.

I think I just gained weight reading the menus :p thanks for posting!

I thought the same thing. My husband actually started to roll his eyes when I started telling him about the choices - reminded me this wasn't for our upcoming cruise. ;)

Well, I thought of a few more questions.

  • Is it a ship that can feel "crowded"?
  • Are there 2 production shows?
  • Do you have to print your boarding passes and luggage tags, or are they mailed?
  • Is Barcelona one of the "easier" embarkation/debarkation ports? (I am posting this on the Europe boards also).
  • Are there many outdoor activities on the European itineraries (I realize the cruise is port-intensive, but just wanted to give her some ideas)
  • Carry-on luggage - other than the necessities like meds are there things that one would suggest to have for a European cruise (I know some like to have a swimsuit on Caribbean ones).

Well, I thought of a few more questions. Is it a ship that can feel "crowded"?

Very much so, at least in certain areas at certain times.

There are tables along a too-narrow aisle by the Lido serving areas. It can be quite tight maneuvering in this area.

Getting to the dining room through the photo gallery area can also be crowded.

Are there 2 production shows?

There will be two shows most nights. The times will either be at 7:00 & 9:00, or 8:00 & 10:00. It varies.

Do you have to print your boarding passes and luggage tags, or are they mailed?

Nothing is mailed.

It's a good idea to print at least the first page of your boarding passes. Additional pages may be necessary, depending on what other items HAL is furnishing.

Luggage tags may be printed, or you can get some from the porters when you arrive at the pier.
