Sunrise?

I do have to ask what is "the elusive green flash"? I have seen both sunrises and sunsets at sea and from shore and elsewhere (absolutely gorgeous in the mountains), but I am totally clueless as to what this is.

The green flash is a wonderful thing... I've only seen it three times myself. As the sun sets on a perfectly clean flat horizon, like the sea, the last rays of the sun are refracted through the atmosphere... the last rays are green and a split second flash of emerald green appears and then vanishes. It's a miracle... really, a miracle.

Wow, I've never heard of the green flash either. It sounds amazing though and I can't wait to watch for it next cruise. :)

Remember, the sky can't be the least bit hazy... perfectly clear and no clouds on the horizon...

On the first morning of our cruise on Carnival Glory last May before arriving in HMC, I was up early to get some coffee on the Lido deck and just happened to notice the sun was coming up. I went back to our cabin to get my camera and then went up to the 10th deck for some pictures. This is the first time I've actually seen a sunrise on a cruise ship - it was beautiful.

The green flash really is neat. I have been fortunate to see it a few times. I have been able to take a few pictures as well. Long time ago before digital cameras. :D We used to go down to Sarasota, Florida to visit my in-laws around Easter break. It wasn't a long drive to the beach so we would pack up the in-laws and the kids and head to the beach to watch the sunset. Well I would watch the sunset (and other things :)) and the kids would collect sea shells. Couldn't convince my FIL that the green flash existed until he saw it with me one evening. Keep you eyes open and the camera ready. Good luck.

Thanks Mach. Will have to pay attention more and hopefully get a glimpse someday.

It's one of those jaw dropping, eye bugging experiences. On our last cruise on the Ecstasy Stitch and I were standing at the rail on the Verandah Deck forward of the pool area on the Lido Deck. Conditions were PERFECT! I told her it might happen and it did. I looked at her and she was in slack-jawed amazement!!!

I'm so buzzed about being on my long-awaited cruise that I don't sleep in past sunrise. I normally hop into my OV window for a bit, then get dressed for the day, grab my camera and sneak out of the cabin before anyone else gets up to watch the sun rise. It's very peaceful and calm and not a lot of people about.

This is my favorite sunrise picture, the sun rising over Coz. To this day, whenever I heard James Taylor's "Mexico" it makes me a bit weepy and nostalgic, it was a special cruising moment for me.

Gorgeous pics! That last one, you were staying at the Marriott Biscayne Bay, weren't you? Our pics are almost identical to yours but i think we were up a few floors (21st floor).

Yup. We were on the top floor, whichever that was, the very end room. It was awesome. My DD spied a MANATEE from our balcony that morning from up there in the little harbor below. It was really cool.

Sunrises for me are so SPECIAL!!! I go to the bow... And feeling the wind in my face, I expeience the unwrapping of the morning...

this is just one shot out of many that morning on our way to Jamaica...

and then turning around, catch the moon in the clouds, with the reddish colors of the morning...

And a few more from a B2B cruise in 2009... but I still can just look at them and feel all the awe and wonder of the gift of each day and the amazement of how this fragile worl is held in space, rotating to bring us one of these sunrises every day!!!

Again... that was a day out of Jamaica... And such a calm sea!!!

That one is approaching Cozumel...

This one, you should recognize... approaching Nassau on the first leg of this B2B...

It is just so wonderful to see the sunrise on a horizon... a 360 degree horizon, if you stand on the top of the ship and just take it all in!!!

We were arriving in Isla Roatan on August 14 and I took this sunrise shot. I didn't see the 'image' until after I uploaded it to my computer.
